The Millfield-educated Jim Foat was something of a throwback to an earlier time when low batting averages were more commonplace. In truth, he was an average batsman who compensated by being a superb fielder in the covers - in the 1973 Gillette Cup final his run-out of Tony Greig arguably turned the match. After six unproductive seasons, Foat finally enjoyed a good season in 1978, and in June 1979 made his fifth and highest hundred - 126 against Northamptonshire - and was awarded his county cap. But he played only three more first-class games for Gloucestershire and was released at the end of the summer.
