Richard Wardill's career was uneventful other than his innings of 110 for Victoria against New South Wales at the MCG on Boxing Day in 1867. It was the first hundred recorded in first-class cricket. A little over five years later he committed suicide by throwing himself into the River Yarra after he had been discovered embezzling thousands of dollars from his employers to cover share and gambling debts. He agreed to go with his employer to the police and on the way asked to call at his home so he could explain all to his family. He slipped out the back door and from there went to the river.
