Obituary
Archibald Trevor Maxwell Jones, who has died aged 85, had a neat, no-nonsense temperament every bit as impressive as his name. In 1938 at the age of 18 he went in at No. 9 for Somerset at Leicester and scored a hundred, the youngest player to do so for the county. It had looked like an innings defeat and most of his older team-mates already had their bags packed, ready for a quick getaway. But he and Wally Luckes, the wicketkeeper, studiously compiled 146 for the ninth wicket to thwart Leicestershire. Any aspirations to play permanently for Somerset were forgotten when the war came and he was posted to the Middle East with the West Somerset Yeomanry. His last of 21 appearances for the county was in 1948. A fine bridge player, he was close to international status and for a time was in charge of the Cornish team.
