Sri Lanka in England T20I Match

England v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 9 wickets (with 16 balls remaining)

2.25pm Right! We're almost ready to go. We have the right teams showing, Sri Lanka's bowlers are warmed up, the crowds are smiling, England's World Twenty20 opening pair, Craig Kieswetter and Michael Lumb are reunited and this is all quite exciting.

2.15pm We're about 15 minutes from play so until then I suggest checking out Andrew Miller's preview or perhaps this review of Afghanistan's cricketing rise. Would love to see Bell keep wicket though.

Just to confirm Sri Lanka line up like this: Jayasuriya, Jayawardene, Sangakkara, Mathews, Kandamby, J Mendis, Kulasekara, Perera, Malinga, Randiv, Lakmal. Also, please ignore the England team shown in our scorecard there for now, it's nonsense.

2.00pm Hello and welcome. It's Twenty20 time and we have an overcast but dry conditions in Bristol. I repeat, dry.

All sorts going on today, Stuart Broad and Thilan Kandamby's captaincy debut, the return, controversially, of 41-year-old player-turned-politician Sanath Jayasuriya for Sri Lanka. Pleasingly there is a sellout crowd with people still making their way into the ground. Or so says Andrew McGlashan, who is our man at the ground.

I'm Sahil Dutta and I, along with Liam Brickhill will bring you ball-by-ball details. Andrew Miller is on the bulletins too. UK desk out in force for this. Broad's first move as captain is a bad one. Sri Lanka have won the toss and will bowl .

Oddly enough, England have left out Ian Bell, who is in dreamy form, for Ravi Bopara who really isn't. Value of his bowling I guess. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have Angelo Matthews back and Lasith Malinga too. They look a mile stronger than they did for the Tests. England, without Cook and Bell, look much weaker but the return of Craig Kieswetter at the top of the order is exciting. I felt he was dropped prematurely but word is he's worked hard at his game with Graham Thorpe and improved since then anyway.

0.1

Kulasekara to Lumb, no run, ah, welcome to T20! Kulasekara lands a shortish wide ball that Lumb aims a massive yahoo at and misses. Bell would have silkily cut that for four. Just saying.

0.2

Kulasekara to Lumb, 1 run, ooh, edged but wide of slip! Lumb gets squared up, in a way Bell would not have, as a ball zips off the seam. Runs to third man to get England and Lumb away

0.3

Kulasekara to Kieswetter, no run, Kulasekara aims fuller, finds some away swing and Kieswetter is reluctant to get forward. Ends up prodding late and it ghosts the edge

0.4

Kulasekara to Kieswetter, no run, Kieswetter's response is to shuffle down the track without much menace. He leaves alone

0.5

Kulasekara to Kieswetter, 1 run, nicely done from the batsman, hopping across his crease and whipping to leg

0.6

Kulasekara to Lumb, 1 run, Lumb is more secure here, chopping a shortish ball to third man to end a quiet first over

End of over 1 (3 runs) England 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
MJ Lumb    2* (3b)      KMDN Kulasekara    1-0-3-0
C Kieswetter    1* (3b)

Suranga Lakmal shares the new nut, which means Malinga lurks.

1.1

Lakmal to Lumb, no run, short and wide to begin with and another big swipe from Lumb at fresh air

1.2

Lakmal to Lumb, no run, good grief. That is a serious hoik. Again at fresh air but you have to admire the, well, I'm not sure but good intent I suppose

1.3

Lakmal to Lumb, OUT, well, you have to say that was coming. Lumb departs. Swinging across the line, the ball found a top edge that went high towards mid-off. Not a happy return for Lumb, still looks like Bell would have been a better option

MJ Lumb c Malinga b Lakmal 2 (5m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

1.4

Lakmal to Kieswetter, 1 run, Kieswetter pops this fuller ball off his toes to midwicket to bring KP on strike. These two won that World Twenty20 final against Australia, remember

1.5

Lakmal to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen comes down across the ball slightly and slices towards point

1.6

Lakmal to Kieswetter, 1 run, back of a length from Lakmal but the line remains tight. Kieswetter whips off his hip to deep square

End of over 2 (3 runs) England 6/1 (RR: 3.00)

KP Pietersen    1* (1b)      KMDN Kulasekara    1-0-3-0

2.1

Kulasekara to Kieswetter, 1 run, Kieswetter is late getting forward to Kulasekara, again. The forward poke comes off an inside edge to midwicket

2.2

Kulasekara to Pietersen, FOUR, ah wonderful shot. Pietersen skips down and outside off stump and easily clips, with a flick of the wrists, wide of mid-on for four

2.3

Kulasekara to Pietersen, 1 run, Sangakkara comes up to the stumps in response so Pietersen is more cautious, punching a drive straight to mid-off and hurtling down for the single

2.4

Kulasekara to Kieswetter, OUT, another unhappy return for an England opener. Kieswetter this time. Rushes down the wicket, swings hard without a hint of timing at it loops gently to mid-off. Good start from Sri Lanka!

C Kieswetter c Kandamby b Kulasekara 4 (10m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 57.14

So England's Twenty20 vice-captain Eoin Morgan comes to the crease.

2.5

Kulasekara to Morgan, no run, Morgan is as flinty-eyed as ever. Never changes that expression. Defends to cover

2.6

Kulasekara to Morgan, no run, Kulasekara ventures full and Morgan drives with a really hard swing of the bat. The angle across him, however, means he misses

End of over 3 (6 runs) England 12/2 (RR: 4.00)
EJG Morgan    0* (2b)      KMDN Kulasekara    2-0-9-1
KP Pietersen    6* (3b 1x4)      RAS Lakmal    1-0-3-1

3.1

Lakmal to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen aims another leg-side flick from a foot outside off stump. This delivery is not as full so he only collects one for his effort

3.2

Lakmal to Morgan, SIX, classy stuff from Morgan, showing the openers how it's done. Shuffles down the track and eases, slowly, his bat through the line. The ball just kept going up and up and cleared the rope by a long way

3.3

Lakmal to Morgan, FOUR, four this time! Similar shot not timed quite as well. It was close to Lakmal as the bowler jumped but Morgan's strong forearms seemed to muscle it past him

3.4

Lakmal to Morgan, no run, ooh, Morgan on the charge again but some late swing into him finds the pads

3.5

Lakmal to Morgan, 1 run, Lakmal a touch wide this time and Morgan cuts hard to third man, who runs around and tumbles well to field

3.6

Lakmal to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen clips very firmly to straight midwicket. Morgan had advanced and if the throw had hit he would have gone by a few yards

End of over 4 (12 runs) England 24/2 (RR: 6.00)

4.1

Kulasekara to Morgan, FOUR, another lovely shot from Morgan. So easy. It was a shin-high full toss admittedly, but Morgan drove sweetly straight past the bowler for four

4.2

Kulasekara to Morgan, 1 run, oh dear! Missed run out chance! Morgan dropped a defence by his toes and saw big KP haring down at him, Morgan had no option but to run and if Sanga's throw had hit he would have gone

4.3

Kulasekara to Pietersen, 1 run, flipped casually towards midwicket

4.4

Kulasekara to Morgan, no run, Morgan down the wicket again but a slower ball prevents him doing anything dramatic

4.5

Kulasekara to Morgan, no run, good stuff from Kulasekara, holding it back of a length as Morgan advances, giving him no chance to get any leverage. Blocked back to the bowler

4.6

Kulasekara to Morgan, no run, "oh he's!.. er" says Miller. I thought it was out as Morgan nibbled at a slower one outside off. Apparently there was no edge

End of over 5 (6 runs) England 30/2 (RR: 6.00)

Time for a bit of stardust, here is Lasith Malinga.

5.1

Malinga to Pietersen, no run, starts on a length around off stump. Pietersen drives hard, but straight to mid-off

5.2

Malinga to Pietersen, 2 runs, there's the attempted yorker but Malinga overeggs it a touch and Pietersen happily flips off his ankle to deep midwicket

5.3

Malinga to Pietersen, 1 run, the drive comes off the toe-end and trickles to mid-off. Malinga cooking up good pace already. Such a shame his body isn't up to Test cricket

5.4

Malinga to Morgan, no run, slung full and fast wide of off stump. Morgan drives and misses

5.5

Malinga to Morgan, no run, this is already an excellent over. Yorker length here and Morgan bunts to point

5.6

Malinga to Morgan, no run, 90.5mph and full, straight too. Morgan's drive is gentle and finds mid-off. Ends the Powerplay and Sri Lanka will be the happier of the two. Still plenty of batting to come for England though

End of over 6 (3 runs) England 33/2 (RR: 5.50)

6.1

Perera to Pietersen, 1 run, Perera, the new bowler, seems much more enticing than Malinga. He starts short and wide and Pietersen crashes to deep point. Good shot for one

6.2

Perera to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan clips off his hip, without much power, to square leg

6.3

Perera to Pietersen, FOUR, Pietersen charges down and seems to intimidate Perera who goes back of a length and wide in response. Pietersen stands tall and emphatically powers a drive wide of mid-off for four

6.4

Perera to Pietersen, FOUR, inventive! Don't see this much. Pietersen down the wicket and strolls a long, long way outside off stump. Ends up flipping it over short fine leg, up on one knee, for four

6.5

Perera to Pietersen, 1 run, Perera is lucky to get away with this, shin-high full toss outside off stump. Pietersen crunches a back-foot swish to deep cover

6.6

Perera to Morgan, no run, good end to the over from Perera, back of a length and a tight line. Morgan's leg-side clip goes straight to short fine leg

End of over 7 (11 runs) England 44/2 (RR: 6.28)

7.1

Randiv to Pietersen, 1 wide, Randiv is the new bowler and starts by spearing a wide one across Pietersen from around the wicket

7.1

Randiv to Pietersen, no run, again Randiv is very wide and had Pietersen not got a toe-end on this it would have been called a wide as well

7.2

Randiv to Pietersen, 1 run, fired in straight this time and it's worked to the leg side

7.3

Randiv to Morgan, 1 run, worked into space for a single

7.4

Randiv to Pietersen, no run, fired across the right hander again, quite wide of off but Pietersen misses his cut

7.5

Randiv to Pietersen, SIX, real thwack off the bat. You could here the noise reverberate around the ground as Pietersen thrust a foot forward and flat-batted this very, very hard for six down to long-on

7.6

Randiv to Pietersen, no run, sharp fielding off his own bowling saves Randiv a single

End of over 8 (9 runs) England 53/2 (RR: 6.62)
KP Pietersen    28* (18b 3x4 1x6)      S Randiv    1-0-9-0

8.1

Lakmal to Morgan, no run, slower ball from Lakmal, starts very high but loops down past Morgan at about waist high. Morgan seemed surprised and missed his cut

8.2

Lakmal to Morgan, 1 run, big swing back into Morgan here and he almost falls over trying to jab out a yorker. Good delivery

8.3

Lakmal to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen jumped wide of leg to give himself room. Ended up overdoing it and couldn't reach his off-side drive

8.4

Lakmal to Pietersen, 1 run, good delivery again from Lakmal, full and straight and Pietersen can only drive down the ground quietly

8.5

Lakmal to Morgan, FOUR, unlucky for the bowler. Shortish and Morgan's carve went off the top edge finer than he expected to the third man boundary

8.6

Lakmal to Morgan, 1 run, dropped! Oh dear! Morgan flat-batted a full toss straight to Angelo Matthews on the long-on boundary who set himself nicely, but dropped the chance

End of over 9 (7 runs) England 60/2 (RR: 6.66)

9.1

Randiv to Morgan, 2 runs, good shot here, Morgan down the wicket and swishing to deep cover where some excellent sliding fielding saves the boundary

9.2

Randiv to Morgan, 1 run, turned around the corner for one

9.3

Randiv to Pietersen, 1 run, the angle across Pietersen is causing the batsman a touch of bother and he can't get any power on a drive

9.4

Randiv to Morgan, 1 run, Randiv pauses before delivering, Morgan waits, and drive down the ground when it eventually arrives

9.5

Randiv to Pietersen, 1 run, ooof, Pietersen really hacked hard at this to cover

9.6

Randiv to Morgan, 1 run, chopped out to deep point

Phew. This is all rather swift. Here's Liam

Thanks Sahil. Agreed, this Twenty20 cricket is manic stuff!

10.1

Perera to Morgan, 1 run, a low, dipping full-toss is heaved out to wide long-on, and there are ironic cheers from the packed crowd as Mathews stops it cleanly

10.2

Perera to Pietersen, (no ball) 1 run, another full-toss - this one quite high - is thrashed down to long-on. Ah, and that's called a no-ball for height by Nigel Llong. Rightfully so

10.2

Perera to Morgan, SIX, a little too predictably, another full-toss is dished up and this time Morgan is waiting for it, swiping the ball high over the midwicket boundary

10.3

Perera to Morgan, SIX, six more! Another high full toss and Morgan sends it arcing over the leg-side, baseball style. A real crowdkiller, and don't they love it!

Slight delay here as a new ball is brought out the middle. The last one's been smashed clean out of the ground ...

10.4

Perera to Morgan, 1 run, this time he manages to land a delivery, and Morgan shovels the half-volley out into the deep

10.5

Perera to Pietersen, 2 runs, full and very wide indeed, KP throws everything at it and a thick outside edge flies down to third man, where Lakmal cuts it off

10.6

Perera to Pietersen, SIX, six more! Another full toss and it's savagely dealt with by Pietersen, who smites it handsomely straight back over the bowler's head. A massive 24 runs from the over

Sri Lanka need to regain some control, and so Malinga is brought back

11.1

Malinga to Morgan, FOUR, but it doesn't help! Not the loosener by any means from Malinga, but it's just the right length for Morgan to get underneath and crack down the ground for another boundary

11.2

Malinga to Morgan, no run, much better length, right up to the bat, and Morgan can only dig it out to cover

11.3

Malinga to Morgan, OUT, finally, Sri Lanka get the breakthrough! Malinga slung down a short ball - perhaps surprising Morgan a little - and the pull shot flew out to deep square where Mahela Jayawardene sprinted to his right to hold it cleanly

EJG Morgan c Jayawardene b Malinga 47 (38m 32b 4x4 3x6) SR: 146.87

Something of a message in a bottle from Prathyush: "This is my last day of internet for 6 months. Im loading my twitter thanks to Morgan and KP. Please publish." Where are you going?

11.4

Malinga to Pietersen, 1 run, full outside off, Pietersen steps down the pitch to drive to long-off

11.5

Malinga to Bopara, no run, slower ball from Malinga, but Bopara appears to pick it and defends quietly towards point

Bopara is taking his guard on or outside leg, leaving his stumps exposed. A tactic to deal with Malinga's yorkers?

11.6

Malinga to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara is off the mark, nudging a very full delivery through square leg

12.2

Jayasuriya to Bopara, no run, Bopara skips down the track and taps it back to the bowler

12.3

Jayasuriya to Bopara, 1 run, flicked to midwicket for a sharp single

12.4

Jayasuriya to Pietersen, 2 wides, KP moves a foot outside leg before Jayasuriya has even reached the crease, the canny old man fires one at his legs but the ball slips a little too far down the leg side

12.4

Jayasuriya to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara rotating the strike well here, again nudging to leg

12.5

Jayasuriya to Pietersen, OUT, a wicket for Sanath, and it's a big one! Again Pietersen had backed right to leg, but this time Jayasuriya speared a much quicker one right at middle stump. KP was looking to run it down to third man and simply missed the ball

13.1

Randiv to Bopara, no run, leading edge! But it drops just short of a diving Kandamby at extra cover. Randiv staying round the wicket to the right-handers

13.2

Randiv to Bopara, 1 run, driven down to long-off for one

13.3

Randiv to Patel, no run, full outside off and angling further, Patel drives to cover

13.4

Randiv to Patel, OUT, direct-hit, and Patel has been run-out! He was looking to run the ball past point, but hit the fielder. Inexplicably, he wandered out of his crease and was slow to get back as the throw came in. Lazy dismissal ... and Samit is utterly disconsolate as he walks off

Malinga to Woakes, OUT, yet another slower ball from Malinga, this one full outside off, and Woakes is into the shot much too soon. He was trying to swipe to long-on but got right under the ball, and Mathews held onto the swirling chance

Just one boundary in the last eight overs. That tells the story of where England's innings lost their way. Morgan and Pietersen hardly looked troubled in putting together 83 for the third wicket at close to 10 an over, but after they were dismissed the middle and lower order really struggled. Perera bore the brunt of Morgan and Pietersen's onslaught, but otherwise Sri Lanka were really impressive with the ball - even old Sanath, fresh from his parliamentary chambers (I imagine) picked up two wickets, including the big one of Pietersen. He'll have a chance to make another statement with the bat shortly.

"Nice sequence in that last over: bye, bye, bye, bye-bye," says Brendan. Indeed.

Join us in 10 minutes or so for the resumption.
