Narine will play a big role in World T20 - Sammy

27

West Indies captain Darren Sammy has said his side would have a weapon in Sunil Narine in Sri Lanka for the World Twenty20. Sammy said the offspinner, among the best spinners in the world, has had an extraordinary introduction to international cricket, and that he expects Narine to play a crucial part in West Indies campaign on Sri Lanka's dry, turning tracks.

"By now [Narine] is a very experienced T20 bowler," Sammy said. "He has done well in this format and won the [Golden Player award] in the IPL. I can see him playing a very big role for us in the tournament because of the pitches here."

Narine has taken seven wickets at 18.23 in Twenty20 Internationals, but perhaps his ODI average of 18.82 from 15 matches is a better reflection of his ability. Blessed with biting turn, a difficult knuckle-ball and a natural knack for guile, Narine has quickly become one of the world's most promising talents, and fetched $700,000 at the IPL auction on that reputation. Sammy said he expects Narine to continue to impress, having had a successful start.

"He has been a great performer for West Indies since coming into the team, so I think it will be more of the same in this tournament."

Sammy played down the notion that his team arrived as tournament favourites however, and said that although the shortest format was the forte of several West Indies players, there are other contenders for the title.

"I have been asked a lot of times about how it feels to be the favourites. But I do not see us as favourites. There are a lot of good teams in this tournament. We just believe that we could come here and win. The calibre of the players we have means that once we go out there and play we can go all the way in this tournament.

"Anyone can have a chance of winning in T20 cricket because the games are shorter and that brings the teams closer together. I don't think you can say that we are favourites," he said.

West Indies swept the two-game Twenty20 series against New Zealand in June as well as comfortably winning the ODI leg of that tour 4-1. Sammy said his side's preparation, which included a nine-day camp in Barbados, had been encouraging. The side had meshed well together, he said, and would approach the tournament with the sole focus of rewarding their fans.

"We want to put all our resources into going out and winning. Our motto for the tournament is one goal, one people and one team. To win the tournament will mean a lot to us as cricketers. Cricket in our islands has been through a lot over the last few years."

"Caribbean people are [now] pulling in one direction. The people come out and support us wherever we go. We as a team always want to keep the fans at the forefront of our mind. It is a wonderful opportunity to put a huge smile on the faces of our fans across the world for supporting us over the last few years. From speaking to everyone in the squad, I can see that they are all motivated and see this is as a massive opportunity."

Will be interesting to see how Narine fares on Sri Lankan pitches, coz they are no longer tailor made for spinners, but The Windies do have a world class T20 side capable of winning the tournament.................

W.I. team looks unstoppable beautiful balance of stroke players, big hitters, spin, pace and swing....my starting XI

Gayle Smith Bravo Jnr Samuels Pollard Simmons + Bravo Snr Russell Sammy c Rampaul Narine

Sammy fantastic fielder?? He used to be now Sammy for famous for dropping easy catches......WI recent winning performances are on the basis on ROACH, GAYLE, CHANDERPAUL, and SAMUELS......SAMMY inclusion in the team will be the reason WI loses...his inclusion means possibly RUSSEL or BADREE will not play. RUSSEL inconsistent bowling but great lower order batting and when in form great swing bowler. BADREE only person with more economical figures than NARINE. Either Rampaul or Edwards to open bowling (whichever is in better shape both are too prone to injuries) with Badree then Narine, and mixture Bravo, Russel, Gayle, Samuels, Dwayne Smith even Pollard if needed. Ramdin is the keeper with room for one specialist batsman......no room for SAMMY if WI are to WIN.

@Xxx25 he id more than a contributing player ie, he is passionate. Love the way he lead the 3rd Test agsinst India Win or Draw not Defeat. He fought with minnow quality team to not get whitewashed which was missing from out capt in Aus n Eng. He is better than lethargic n overrated Pollard's batting+bowling. After the inclusion of serious match winners Gayle,Smith,Narine they are one of fav including Ind & Pak to win the cup.

sammy there is only one problem to your theory on sunil.. Sri lankans pitches are no longer tailor made for spinners, now its mostly made slow swing bolwers because thats what we have.. gone are the days when we used to rely on one spinner to win us matches..

  • on September 12, 2012, 2:17 GMT

I really hope that Andre Russell gets promoted in the batting order. we have a really strong batting unit anf they will do well.

  • boyie83 on September 12, 2012, 1:24 GMT

@Xxx25 What is wrong with you? Sammy belong in every team in the West indies... once i thought like u but realize how important Sammy is to the team

  • on September 12, 2012, 0:56 GMT

@xxx25 stop being negative and lets move on Sammy is the captain and now a days he is contributing to the team.. Let your bias and hate stay out of cricket..Good luck to Sammy and the rest of the team.

@xxx25.. cleary ure not much of a cricket follower.. and more of a drama queen with personal issues against sammy.. if u were following cricket u wud kno in recent times.. he and andre russel are some of the most effective guys to come in at the lower order in T20.. plus he bowls pretty economical.. not forgetting to mention that it is under him.. that windies truly started to imrove conistsently.. then u wud see.. ure suggestion to drop sammy is pretty ignorant

  • Cpt.Meanster on September 11, 2012, 21:50 GMT

I seriously feel WI have a REALISTIC chance of winning this tournament. They got some big guns in their batting and even the bowling looks good. Darren Sammy will be an effective player in the lower order PLUS he can also bowl and is a fantastic fielder. It's sad to see how some fans totally overlook the WI nowadays. I won't be surprised if the WI make it to the final four. From there it is any one's game.

  • Munafis810 on September 11, 2012, 19:26 GMT

I think Bravo and Sammys bowling will be better in SL

  • Rash_inswinger on September 11, 2012, 19:12 GMT

Windies, after a very long time are looking a much stronger and fitter unit before a Major tournament ...they have all the match winners and for once they are not depending only on gayle's or narine's pyrotechnics , there's enough firepower in batting in the form of Bravo bro's, pollard, samuels and if all fail there's still still hope in Sammy,Russel and Dwayne to take windies to a decent total. Bowling looks in good shape besides Narine's 4 overs, sammy pollard, bravo, ravi and samuels can all be economical and can challenge any opposition even they have 135-140 on board, but if gayle gets into his IPL form..no one can stop the Caribbean boys from reaching the final and maybe even win the CUP. Sorry forgot to mention the bench strength Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt :)
