A grand final before the semis

Match facts

September 28, 2012
Start time 1930 local (1400 GMT)

Big Picture

An early grand final, Michael Hussey called this match. A loss won't end the tournament for either side but in a difficult Super Eights group also featuring South Africa and Pakistan, Australia and India are both desperate to begin with a victory. Both teams enter the match with a solid if not spectacular form-line behind them. India accounted for a plucky Afghanistan and then annihilated a lacklustre England in the group stages, while Australia thrashed Ireland and then did enough against a strong West Indies side to be ahead on Duckworth-Lewis when the rain came halfway through their hefty chase.

Australia have had a settled line-up so far in this tournament and that is unlikely to change now. Shane Watson in particular has been outstanding, both with the ball and at the top of the batting order, and has been Man of the Match in both games so far. India's team selections are much less obvious, especially after Virender Sehwag was left out of their second match. Zaheer Khan and R Ashwin also didn't play against England and finding someone to squeeze out of the side after their 90-run win won't be easy. Harbhajan Singh, who didn't play the first game, seems to have cemented his spot with four wickets against England.

The presence of Harbhajan will add an extra dimension to the match. These are teams with a history of fiery clashes, and Harbhajan has often been part of that. However, in recent battles between India and Australia the tensions have faded considerably. Australia's captain George Bailey still expects some verbal stoushes in the heat of a World Twenty20 contest, especially with Harbhajan back and Australia's mouthy opener David Warner unlikely to keep quiet. "We have players who probably engage in some of that and players who don't," Bailey told reporters on Thursday. "You'll find that most of those guys who like to verbal, they instigate it. That's the way they get their juices flowing. It gets them switched on."

Just as long as neither side allows such sideshows to distract them from the main game.

Watch out for

Last time these two teams met in a World T20 match, in Bridgetown in May 2010, David Warner was Man of the Match for his 72 from 42 balls. He hasn't made that many in a T20 international since, but he has consistently made contributions in recent times: in his past six innings he has scored 58, 22, 31, 59, 26 and 28. A Warner whirlwind can't be far away.

Harbhajan Singh has tormented Australia for nearly 15 years, though his best against them has come in Test cricket; in limited-overs matches he hasn't had the same impact. But after gaining confidence with four wickets against England at the same venue, Harbhajan will be full of self-belief and could be a handful for Australia's batsmen.

Team news

Australia are expected to name an unchanged side after using the same XI for their victories over Ireland and West Indies in the group stage. That would mean still no place for David Hussey, the leading run scorer in Twenty20 history.

Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Hussey, 4 George Bailey (capt), 5 Cameron White, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Daniel Christian, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Brad Hogg.

Mystery still surrounds Virender Sehwag's place in the side after he was left out of the England game. MS Dhoni said on the day before the match that India were likely to play five bowlers, which could in turn mean Sehwag is squeezed out. That would be a monumental decision, although Sehwag has never managed to bring his best against Australia in limited-overs cricket. In ODIs against them he averages 21.68 and in five T20s his average has been 8.20.

India (possible) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Irfan Pathan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Suresh Raina, 7 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 L Balaji/Ashok Dinda.

Pitch and conditions

India's spinners enjoyed working at the R Premadasa Stadium against England - Harbhajan Singh took four wickets and Piyush Chawla two. There have also been plenty of runs in the pitch for the batsmen.

Stats and trivia

  • Australia and India have met six times in T20 internationals for three victories each
  • In those six matches Australia have had four different captains: Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and George Bailey. India have been led only by MS Dhoni

Quotes

"What we'd like to focus on is if you can keep some wickets in the shed for the back end then India's bowlers have been put under a bit of pressure and you can score quite well."
Australia's captain George Bailey

"They are one of the best because they have done consistently well. Both of them play aggressive cricket and look to score as many runs as possible in the first six overs."
India's captain MS Dhoni knows the importance of restricting Shane Watson and David Warner

@murtand misra: People dont want that IND loose. It is just that they loose. Same thing will happen against AUS, it will be a mismatch and they will loose by 6,7 wickets. And so called "Grand Finale" will be Grand Mismatch. Whenever IND plays it becomes so boring, and it seems like everyone loosing to watch IND playing.

I can see lots of Pakistanisn, SL and of couse few English fans have complains over the title..this is definitely not the grand final but I guess this is going to be the one of the most exciting encoounters of the tournament. This group has few very good matches like India vs Aus, Aus vs SA and Ind vs Pak...

They still forget the fact that Australia was thrashed in the semis in the 2007 T20 w/Cup by almost the same Dhoni & Co. Why do u people forget that every often?

I point is if Indians can get Watson and Warner in 2 - 3 overs, then we get to see the real Australian line-up... hope for the best game!!!

@khurramsch : Did you say Indian fans hype it as "Grand Finale"?? Is Mike Hussey an Indian fan or what mate? Read through the article once atleast. BTW, i do agree that this match is NOWAY a Grand Finale but certainly can be a good game.

  • POSTED BY Nothingness on | September 28, 2012, 10:50 GMT

For all the people who are calling Group 2 a very competitive one - All games in group 2 will be played at R. Premadasa which will be a paradise for spinners. So PAK and IND have an outrageous advantage in this group. These games are probably going to be one sided matches. Group 1 matches are played in Pallekalle which is a good batting track, so all the 4 teams have an even chance. So, IND and PAK are lucky to be in this group.

  • POSTED BY mathewjohn2176 on | September 28, 2012, 10:42 GMT

@bmike, your statement is equivalent to calling srilankan vs Zimbabwe as clash of minnows.

  • POSTED BY krahuls on | September 28, 2012, 10:36 GMT

I am hoping it to be tough match.. both are sidesa re well matched at least on paper ! I too agree with one of my friend who wrote above - if sehwag is not playing - then have rohit open with gambhir. Rohit is a class batsman and can take any attack apart ! All the best India !

Both teams are have club bowlers, this battle between the minnows of Super Eight will have me on the edge of seat. Meanwhile, the real deal - WI & Eng will qualify for the finals, where this time we will defend our crown.

@xylo on "Well, the Australian batting tail begins at No.4." LOL. I'm afraid the reality is somewhat different, my friend. AUS have the longest batting line-up in the competition, and the tail begins at 11 - assuming Brad Hogg plays. And even he can score. But don't tell anyone this. It's a secret. ;-)

Yesterday, we had a great game between SL & NZ and our SL brothers won it. Congrats brothers. Today, as it always has, this match will be a very close and a great game. But, I'm more than confident that India will pull this off. India is back in form, batsmen are having a great time, bowlers have recovered now with bajji back in the team, familiar conditions and the wishes of millions of fans favors India. I think todays team will be 1.gambhir 2.dhoni 3.kohli 4.rohit 5.raina 6.yuvraj 7.pathan 8.harbhajan 9.aswin 10.chawla 11.zaheer. It will be interesting to see if Rohit can open with Gambir as he is a classy technical player and he is in form. But, I'm sure Dhoni knows very well than all of us who should do what. So, all the best India. Lets win this match. LETS BLEED BLUE!!!

If it was me i would say India should come up with all their 3 spinners- Harbhajan, Chawla and Ashwin. Both and Harbhajan and Ashwin can bat, with also Pathan, the other seamer being Zak. But who knows Dhoni might come up with some again very controversial and bizarre selection and still win the match, there is a reason why he is the most successful captain today.

Selection for India team - what's the fuss about. Sehwag's definitely in barring any injury forced out. Bowling deptt will be efficiently served by Zaks, Irfan, Bhajji and Ashwin with the fifth bowler quota from so many "part-timers". How can you still label Yuvi as part-timer (remember he was the man of tourney for the last ODI World Cup). Cheers!

Its a high risk to play with Irfan as an opener. He is a bowler who can bat if required and should be used like that. He is no Watson. Also, It is best in team's interest if Shewag along with Gambhir opens the inning. My pick for playing 11 would be

    1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Shewag, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh/Rohit Sharma, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 L Balaji/Ashok Dinda

Now the serious cricket starts...y'day's was super 8 minnows. Today it is the real deal. Well thought of grouping. You keep the super 8 minnows in one group and then actual super teams in the other group. More like contenders and pretenders, if you will. I am sure it must be the cunning plan of the rakshasas.

  • POSTED BY promaster on | September 28, 2012, 7:20 GMT

Yes I agree that the Aussies might not make to semi's because their bowling isn't so good....There's a slight chance that India might come IF Sehwag comes into the team.....Pakistan and West Indies are sure to be in semi finals.

  • POSTED BY QingdaoXI on | September 28, 2012, 7:00 GMT

India have started there "Mission Fateh World t-20 2012" and they have shown it eagerly vs England by thrashing them than in line are Aussies, Pakistanis, South Africans, West Indies and Last, in Final Lankans. The script is written all over and India will eventually Champions again..

  • POSTED BY sri1ram on | September 28, 2012, 6:53 GMT

NOPE, Sehwag should not play this game. I am an avowed Shewagologist, I love the legend much more than I like SRT. But lets face the facts today, he has done well in 2 out of 9 games (including all formats) - a paltry 22%. And against Australia, as pointed out in the article, his averages are pathetic. Added to that he is a known liability on the field who needs to be covered to others! Only thing going for Sehwag is that this is a sub-continental pitch, but I think the quality of the Ozzie pacers take away that home advantage.

I am not one to say that India should copy Australia that has left their leading T20 run scorer, David Hussey, out for the best team balance. Just for the 5% or so chance that VS *MAY* intimidate the Ozzie bowlers, MSD should not take the chance.

  • POSTED BY on | September 28, 2012, 6:52 GMT

Lot of people mocking India , saying they won't make it past the super 8's are either joking or don't know squat about cricket. The 4 teams that are gonna make the semis are Ind, Pak, SL and WI. The rest are easily ruffled by spin and its not gonna change this time. Bhajji and Ashwin will tear through the Aussie batting line up today.

World's most consistent team on world stage (Australia) plays a match against a team who has been ranked below 5 all the time in past two years and it's called as "A grand final before the semis". What a joke? Then how come Australia v Ireland match wasn't called as a grand final before the semis?

  • POSTED BY xylo on | September 28, 2012, 5:56 GMT

Well, the Australian batting tail begins at No.4. The sooner they realize this, the better their chances of winning the tournament.

  • POSTED BY on | September 28, 2012, 5:42 GMT

India is really worst team in this tournament... they don't deserve to qualify to the semi final. Australia, South africa, West indies and Srilanka will should come forward to the next stage would be tough. If India qualifies to the next stage will be ridiculous.

Dhoni should include Yuvraj and Sehwag both as both can bowl. He may left Rohit. Because we all know that Australia bowling is not that great, even WI made 191. So all their strength is batting. we need to stop that with fine bowler. Make your team with 5 bowlers with 2 extra part timers like yuvi and viru.

Pathan cant bat guys. He can swing once in a while but not regularly. His bowling is pathetic. Either of Pathan, Balaji, Zaheer should play along 3 spinners. Zaheer would get the nod depending on his experience but is in terrible form though.

Africans are the best batting, bowling & fielding side, Aus have batting, bowling & fielding to give tough time to any opponent & Pak have a batting concern but still it is decent, there fielding is looking good & there bowling as usual, Afridi & Ajmal will prove to be the back waters in storm for pak & for india withot batting, fielding, bowling are just at club level.

There is nothing wrong in sending irfan pathan at the opening slot. he is a great alrounder. he can clear the boundaries at will. rather than wasting his potential at the low of the order, he should bat at no.1 position. Dhoni has the vision for him. i agree with him. when sehwag and gambhir failed completely. he has no other option he should have preferred murali vijay or robin uttappa. they were the dashing openers. he was right in chosing irfan as he played piyush chawla at the premdasa stadium as he knows spinners at that particular wicket. the only thing dhoni has to do is keep a target of 200-220 since they have hard hitters. we should have some definite plans for david warner, mike hussey, shane whatson and cameron white. shane whatson got out most of the time going for outside off stump. irfan and balaji to aim at his middle wicket similarly cameron white give catches at some particular position most of the times.anyway dhoni plans

If dhoni plan to play 7 batsmen, i would still drop Sehwag & bring in Tiway. I would go with 3 spinners 2 pace bowlers. Ashwin, Bhajji, Chawla, Pathan & Dinda. I'm not fan of Chawla but I guess Chawla can manage 2 overs similar to Zaheer but Chawla could be a good lower order slogger than compare to Zaheer. Spin should be the mantra. 2 offie, 1 leggie, yuvraj's left arm. To support, Pathan's left arm swing & Dinda's pace

  • POSTED BY heathrf1974 on | September 27, 2012, 23:39 GMT

India favourites under more favourable conditions, but T20 is a funny game and it wouldn't be a big surprise if the Aussies got up. Expect the Aussies to be aggressive with their quicks.

  • POSTED BY SPS1 on | September 27, 2012, 23:38 GMT

If we have to employe a makeshift opener if Sehwag is not playing, then I would suggest to go with R. Ashwin. Pretty decent bat and can make quick runs, only problem is slow between the wickets. Keep Irfan in middle order to tackle Brad Hogg left arm spin. Yuvi might fail against spin and if so, then Irfan can attack Brad Hogg.

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | September 27, 2012, 23:25 GMT

Bryden, you have shown Irfan Pathan as an opener instead of Sehwag amongst the Indian team probables!.To start with Irfan Pathen does not even open the innings in the domestic cricket. He will be grossly over matched facing the Aussie pace bowlers. His experiment against England failed. India must have the regular openers - Sehwag & Gambhir vs. Aussies. Irfan opening the batting may injure himself & be knocked out of bowling as well. So it is a high risk issue not worth taking because Irfan is not an opener. Secondly, the game against England was only chance to play those who did not in earlier games. Neither Balaji nor Dinda will play bowling at 11 runs/over!. If they do India will give away at least 70 in their 8 overs. ZAK, Irfan, Ashwin, Harbhajan & Yuvraj/Sehwag are the best available T-20 experienced bowlers in this squad. Dhoni needs to aim at 6 runs/over bowlers & instruct his bowlers to aim at that. Go with proven/ experienced guys rather than gamble in a "must win" Game.

D.hussey is a good player against spin, he is experienced,a brilliant fielder and he is been in fine form for the past one year. If Dhoni does not want one-dimnesional players, how is Zaheer's place assured?? Such a liability in the fielding and batting. We want results, not reputed names. Balaji though not fast, uses lot of variations and does surprise batsmen with yorkers and slower ones, so is better to accompany YPathan. Since Ashwin can also bowl with new ball and Kholi make a surprise over, there is really no threat in using up the new ball. And Dhoni, please play 3 spinners. Sangakara long back said Chawla is the best spinner in India. (he has kept wicket for Chawla bowling in the IPL and facing him a lot in the nets). People underestimate Chawla due to his boyish face. On any day I will pick Chawla in place of Zaheer for T20. Compare their IPL records.

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 20:12 GMT

India is in a very tough group. This group is made up of the teams that have won all their matches so far. Australia and South Africa look strongest in this group. India actually looks the weakest because of their very poor pace bowling - Zaheer, Balaji and Dhinda have been very expensive so far. I am not sure why selectors didn't pick Umesh Yadav. I don't see much use dropping Sehwag for Dhinda or Balaji. Dropping Sehwag for Tiwary might make better sense. Tiwary is a good fielder, can bowl, is a decent reliable batsman and is in good form. He can open the inning, if needed. To win against Australia, 2-3 of Indian batsmen will need to play exceptionally well. For bowling, Bhaji and Yuvraj will be key.

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 19:50 GMT

Considering the current form of SA and PAK teams, both AUS and IND look to be the bottom 2 teams of this group. So, it WILL BE HARD WORK for both the teams to get to top 2 and reach semis....

I thought the KEY player in AUS is Shane Watson. If India can chase him down in this match, they have a brighter chance to win...but I am sure its going to be another tight match.....I HOPE INDIA FIGHTS HARD...

I think its good to include Viru, and not have Balaji/Dinda...4 bowl and 7 bat can work for India, at least for this match...

Finally, cannot wait anymore to watch this match!! Thanks ESPN+Comcast for broadcasting live in USA :) :) !!

As the tournament progressed, we see that pitches get flat..So, it will be a big concern for indian team as well..because if their batting line up scored 180+ against Aus in first innings..So, again it would be a chance for AUS to chase that target because of Cheezy IND bowling line up...Yes, its true, If the pitch gets flat then it would be a disaster for IND as the AUS can chase even 200..So IND bowling should be well mannered because its not ENG side who failed to play spinners..Watch out for Hussey brothers,Watson and Maxwell...Good luck to both teams...may the best team wins...

In my opinion India and Pakistan will qualify for semi's from this pool. Both teams have too many match winners who can win the game in the blink of an eye. Australia and South Africa are very good sides but lack X factor and in crunch games you need those sort of players. So watch out guys my four teams for semi-finals are Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and West indies. I will let you know who will play in final after watching few games. :-)

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 19:19 GMT

Honestly, for India, I would go with Gambhir, Sehwag, Kohli, Yuvraj, Rohit, Raina, Dhoni, Pathan, Harbhajan, Ashwin and Zaheer

Zaheer and Pathan can more than handle the fast bowling while Bajji would give very good support to Ashwin. for the 5 th bowler, we have enough part-timers in Yuvraj, sehwag, kohli, raina and rohit sharma who can bowl some spin even if one of the specialist bowlers have an off day. (In all fairness, dhoni should bowl yuvraj for the full quota since he seems to be in decent touch with the ball)

This also provides India with two good allrounders in Yuvraj and Pathan thus giving a good balance to the team. 6 batsmen, 2 all-rounders and 3 bowlers (though in all fairness, bajji and ashwin can do their fair share of slogging too if it comes down to it. )

I hope India does not play Dinda, His 130KPH speed without any swing will be a nice platter for Aussies.

Yuvraj should be sent higher up in the order. Yuvi has been a real match winner against australia in the past.

Yes i agree the grand final is on Sunday. But this is a group where every match is world class.I believe even semi's and finals are going to be boring compared to matches in this group.

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 18:42 GMT

So you call this pathetic match a 'GRAND FINAL'??????.........what a joke!!!!!!!!

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 18:41 GMT

@El_Toro_Loco Tell that to Mike Hussey , will you? you are overrating Pak and SA by writing of Aus,Ind.

  • POSTED BY Alexk400 on | September 27, 2012, 18:41 GMT

India can not win this game if aussie play patient game against indian spinners taking singles and still keep 8 run per over in first 10 overs then from there they can launch attack. if warner and watson were careful and launch attack first 6 overs like extremely hittable pathan , khan and play cautious 4 overs keep wickets. With 80-90 for no loss would spell doom for india. I know a secret weapon against aussies , lets see dhoni guesses that.

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 18:40 GMT

@the_blue_android open your eyes and see Gambhir has been worse in tests,T20s and better only in ODIs then Sehwag who played just 13 odis in 17-18 months. Why is Sehwag targeted but not Gambhir? atleast Viru doesn't fish every delivery outside off 9 months running like Gambhir.

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 18:35 GMT

both teams are strong in batting. . but if we compare their bowling Australia is better so Ausies has the advantage. . but it will be a good match to watch.

  • POSTED BY Jose on | September 27, 2012, 18:01 GMT

Dhoni always believes in luck. Since India won match against England with 5 bowlers, he would like to go against Aus also the same way. Thats the reason why India never won matches outside the sub-continent. You need good strategy and ability to execute the plans to the best possible extent. Dhoni lacks this quality as a captain. Only thing he brings in the team is Coolness, Philosophical quotes, supporting failed players till they fall into abyss.

  • POSTED BY umbuly on | September 27, 2012, 17:57 GMT

Ashwin having some experience as opener, could be leveraged for opening with Gambhir. I don't know why Irfan was experimented in the last match.

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 17:49 GMT

I think :: Sehwag Gambhir Kohli Raina Rohit Dhoni Pathan Bhajji Ashwin Chawla Zaheer. Reason :: Yuvraj is not no.1/2/3 hitter right now and thats why he did not get to bat is last match. Short ball problem as usual. Sehwag for lottery has to be there. Balaji/Dhinda will go for runs for sure against aus. So i see yuvraj sitting out.

@petercharsi on (September 27 2012, 16:30 PM GMT): Surprised yet very happy to see your comment! If that is the case then this die-hard Indian will support the greens against OZ. Oh, they are set to have a bad time. Hi5

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 17:00 GMT

Personally feel that Staarc /Cummins will play vital role for aussies , if India can play them out by scoring steadily they will post a good total. Chawla being the X factor could prove to be a match winner ,Zaks should be left out

  • POSTED BY on | September 27, 2012, 16:58 GMT

whoever tops this group, will eventually lift the Cup.!!!

  • POSTED BY syedzaf on | September 27, 2012, 16:37 GMT

  • POSTED BY petercharsi on | September 27, 2012, 16:30 GMT

I am a die hard pakistani supporter from Lahore but whenever india plays australia i become an indian :D .. Hoping the indians would dessimate australia and i guess this is their best chance. An ordinary australian team with an ordinary captain should be cake walk for the likes of koli, yuvraj, dhoni, gambhir, harbhajan. Go blues !!!!!!!

  • POSTED BY El_Toro_Loco on | September 27, 2012, 16:21 GMT

Yeah consider this as the final for both teams because both of them wont reach the semis this time. Caio

However I expect tense matches and to Ind and Pak fans ----keep a bp monitor near you on Sunday ...lolz

yes friends it is rightly called group of death SA,PAK, OZ, IND all best of the teams fighting for the place in the semis. SA is always consistent, OZ is great by its name, PAK has always played t20 WC wll but its team INDIA turn to win all the global tournament at present time.....Aus will loose tomorros game and even loose with PAK ............would like to see SA vs INDIA in the final.

  • POSTED BY the_blue_android on | September 27, 2012, 14:46 GMT

Better late than never. Sehwag should have been dropped from all formats 3 years ago. He has won us 1 test match, that too in India and made us lose about 10! There is no place for such careless attitude in international sport.

If you want problems you want India's problems! Just thrashed Eng and need to get Sewag, Ashwin and Zak in to that team. Chawla, Balaji and Rohith will give way but there's room to consider Chawla against Aus but not sure who your would drop. India by a mile for me unless Warner or Watson produce magic.

  • POSTED BY shashankqvivek on | September 27, 2012, 14:35 GMT

The key for me is First 6 overs of Aussies Innings...if their top order clicks then it wiil be tough for india ... and on the other hand india bats really deep... So All depends on how india bowls against aussie top order

  • POSTED BY ScottStevo on | September 27, 2012, 14:27 GMT

This should be an interesting match as they always are between these two sides! I'm sure there'll be a few words between the teams, as there is in almost every game, but both will give as good as they get I suspect. Hopefully it won't become a talking point afterwards as both teams could do with keeping a clean slate - especially when playing each other.

You have to think that if the Indian spinners do well that they will be able to restrict the Aussies, but T20 is so unpredictable and a good over or 2 with the ball or the bat could determine the result.

    Hope it's a close one!

  • POSTED BY IndCricFan2013 on | September 27, 2012, 14:22 GMT

Drop Shewag and get Harbajan in. I would open with Gambhir and Rohit. Kohli and Raina should come in 3/4 depending on who gets out to keep left/right going. They 4 should be playing mtop 4, most of the balls. Dhoni at 5 and Yuvi/Shewag/Tiwary at 6, Irfan at 7, Ashwin at 8, Harbajan/Chawla at 9, Zaheer at 10 and Balaji/Dinda at 11. The only issue/consideration is that Shewag is (only) best in sub continent pitches. He might click, if there is a place to take risk at 6.
