Big Picture

The Group 2 matches on Sunday had big billings, but turned out to be far from closely fought. Australia are now the team to beat, and India, with all their selection headaches ahead of the game against Pakistan, ultimately eased to victory. That success will give India's line-up some stability for their final game against South Africa. Their opponents, on the other hand, after a comprehensive defeat against Australia, desperately need to rebound, and rebound strongly, though even that may not be enough. The requirements for each team will be clearly laid out upon conclusion of the Australia-Pakistan game in the afternoon.

Should Pakistan beat Australia, South Africa will bow out and they'll be playing for pride against India. That would leave India needing to beat South Africa by a margin large enough to overtake either Pakistan or Australia's net run-rate, depending on which of those teams is second in the table. Should Australia beat Pakistan, a win over South Africa will see India through. A win for South Africa, in the same situation, will bring it down to net run-rates between three teams - India, South Africa and Pakistan.

India will be relieved, though concerns over Yuvraj Singh's fitness, despite his impressive show against Pakistan, will remain. Their fifth bowler - the combination of Yuvraj and Virat Kohli - picked up three wickets, though it remains to be seen if they bring in an extra spinner against South Africa.

South Africa's problems against Xavier Doherty will prompt questions over how their batting will cope against India's slow bowlers. Their fielding was off the mark and the pressure created by Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in their early spells proved unsustainable, as the rest of the bowling didn't deliver. The concerns are multiple, as AB de Villiers has admitted, and the slide in form in the Super Eights has threatened to push them out of another ICC tournament. The right results and the right numbers, though, may yet rescue them.

Form guide

(completed matches, most recent first)
India: WLWWL
South Africa: LLWWL

Watch out for

Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel bowled with pace, hit the right lengths, beat the bat and tested Australia's opening pair in Colombo. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir can counterattack with equal ferocity, but their approach will be interesting to watch.

Rohit Sharma, who's been under pressure, has had a good outing in Sri Lanka so far and has also had his captain's backing. He'll look back on a crucial half-century he scored against South Africa in the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007, when an Indian win knocked the hosts out of the tournament.

Team news

Faf du Plessis was the South African to pad up and bat in the nets on the eve of the game, and he could well be picked in place of the struggling opener Richard Levi.

South Africa (possible): 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 JP Duminy, 5 AB de Villiers (capt & wk), 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Robin Peterson, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne Morkel.

South Africa have had issues against spin, and India could be tempted to play an extra specialist spinner. This could mean the impressive L Balaji may have to sit out.

India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 R Ashwin, 11 Zaheer Khan.

Pitch and conditions

There was some early morning rain in Colombo on the eve of the match, but practice was unaffected. The forecast is for partly cloudy weather during the day, but clear skies at night.

Stats and trivia

  • India have beaten South Africa in four of the six Twenty20 internationals between the teams, including twice in World Twenty20s.
  • JP Duminy is 64 runs away from becoming the first South African to reach 1000 runs in T20 internationals.

"The first match starts at 3:30 so we can watch on television if the ball is turning or not, since all teams have good spinners. That too has an impact on deciding the playing XI."
MS Dhoni on India's selection plans for the final Super Eights game

"We haven't played well enough in the key moments. We should have won the Pakistan game. It is disappointing that we have had opportunities to close out games and we haven't done it."
Gary Kirsten on one of South Africa's problems this World T20

Even when South Africa leave the tournament without going to semi's, I still say South Africans are the best. I don't care whether they win or not. There is no team who field better than them. There is no fast bowling attack that is amazing to watch... I enjoy Dale Stayne and Morkels as I enjoyed Alan Donald those days... There is no team on earth who did better than them... They play gentleman's cricket all the time (of course Dale tries to express himself, I rather enjoy it. Who dislikes when a fast bowler goes faster and few words are told, frowned a bit at the batter?)... When AB and Amla bat, it's amazing... SA is a well balanced, talented team, and they are the best for me... Who cares about winning?

Posted by justshmad on (October 2, 2012, 14:51 GMT)

@rahulcricket007, dont talk about ur so called sooooper bats, they r being thrashed in first 11 overs. Just watch quietly.

Posted by Prabhash1985 on (October 2, 2012, 14:31 GMT)

Indians understand only "win" and "lose"... Come on guys, you should play cricket or any other sport... If you play, you know what "win" means to you, as well as "lose". It's good if you win, but playing and giving a good competition like true heroes are what matter, not "win" or "lose". You should learn from New Zealand... Now, India is almost knocked off, then comes good comments... All the time, it was BAD bla bla bla about other teams, and BOASTING bla bla bla about Indian team... Just appreciate even your enemy if they play good cricket. That's why god gave sports to humans.

Once again SA exit a world tournament without making it to the semis. As long as they pursue their selection policy SA don't stand a chance. Tsotsobe, Levi & Parnell were passengers on this one. Levi was found out in the IPL and England. Parnell leaks runs and can't bat. Tsotsobe did not get to bowl a ball! Faf looks good against weaker teams, but like Levi can't compete at the top. Why Graeme Smith was left out is unfathomable - he has a record 2nd only to Kallis . From this squad, today's selection is what I expected to see all along: Amla, Kallis, AB , Duminy, du Plessis, Behardien, Albie Morkel, J Botha, RJ Peterson, DW Steyn, Morne Morkel. AB blew it as Captain. Terrible selections - he kept changing the team & the batting order since he became skipper. Bowlers get one over. This has cNOT worked. He must settle down or hand over the Captaincy. Kirsten needs to rein him in and put his foot down with the selectors or SA are doomed for the next World cup. Sad Proteas fan again.

India need to beat SA by 31 runs or more...

Posted by kc69 on (October 2, 2012, 13:38 GMT)

Lets be clear,my team(India)hasn't played good cricket in this tournament and i won't be surprised if Pak go through for semi's,so i wish my Pakistani Brothers best of luck.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 13:29 GMT)

India should beat SA very well, it is unlikely Aus and Pak would be in the Finals.

Posted by wolf777 on (October 2, 2012, 13:27 GMT)

Rohit Sharma has his Captain's backing despite sporadic success while Manoj Tiwari cannot earn his captain's backing despite of success in sporadic chances he has come his way. Best advice to Manoj Tiwari to seek opportunity with some other Cricket playing nation. No matter what he does, he will always warm the bench for India and play second fiddle to 'Prince' Rohit Sharma.

Great, SA knocked out without even playing India. Rediculous for format in a rediculous version of the game. How do we get knocked out

Posted by RamShankarS on (October 2, 2012, 13:12 GMT)

SA have good players of spin in Amla and Kallis. India should stick with Zaheer, Irfan and Balaji. Ashwin, Yuvi and Raina can fill the spinners' slots with Kohli for variation. I would go with Gambhir, Sehwag, Kohli, Yuvi, Indians-will-not-drop-RohitSharma, Raina, Dhoni, Irfan, Ashwin, Zaheer and Balaji.

Posted by MichaelBurton on (October 2, 2012, 13:06 GMT)

Seems Aus is trying to kill 2 birds from one stone in the match against Pak.

Posted by chandru25 on (October 2, 2012, 12:31 GMT)

Good Luck India, I think including an additional spinner would ease a good victory for India and also can have an eye on spinners reducing the pressure from Indians

Best of luck India,

please help proteas so that they can collect their boarding passes quickly. Proteas dont stand a chance against slow bowlers of India. Only Kallis & Amla can Play spin from S.A but i guess that wont be enough for them

@ILI_ANALYST : Apart from your comments without any respect to SA, What is wrong is you predicted IND vs WI SF clash. That is highly unlikely because IND may not finish No.1 in group2 even if they win against SA. SO if IND wins it will be SL vs Ind at SF.

Posted by Supa_SAFFA on (October 2, 2012, 11:24 GMT)

If Australia defeats Pakistan that should all but settle the outcome of the tournament... SA to take the title.

Posted by onebump on (October 2, 2012, 10:07 GMT)

All the best India! From a SL fan. Want India in the semi final to make it more interesting and challenging for the Sri Lankans. SL vs. India and Australia vs. West Indies semifinals... where have I seen that before? Ah... 1996 world cup! SL went on to beat Australia in the final. Believe Gayle will put Aussies out this time! Bring it on. Poor SAfricans, while lovable, dont have a chance.

Posted by Herath-UK on (October 2, 2012, 10:01 GMT)

India's bowling is very weak but scrape through by bit and pieces slow bowlers and won't stand a chance outside the subcontinent.Sri Lanka won yesterday not through the spinners but fast & medium bowlers having such a varying attack. Paks bowling unit is very good if the batsmen stand tall.It is Sri Lanka Vs India or Pak and let the better team wins. Ranil Herath - Kent

come on SA you can beat easily india because they are very weak side i hope there won't even game for you SA,

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 9:47 GMT)

Pk has a better chance than IN to get thro' to the finals.Pk has to win, they have no clear set up on NRR unlike IN, the controller of the results since they play the last S8 game.IN will include the result of the game between AU and Pk in to their game plan, winning PK over AU will push IN to die for a definite win against SA having a NRR marginal enough to overcome one of NRR of PK or AU. A latent game again between IN and PK !

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 9:42 GMT)

Just go with another spinner instead of a seamer definitely improve the chances of India to win against SA & BEST OF LUCK to TEAM INDIA!!!!!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 9:35 GMT)

Dont underestimate Indians when there is match to be win against SA Indians raised their bar done well in 2007, like today also it might be happen

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 9:20 GMT)

Shame, these people can already predict Pakistan as winners. However biased they are, i bet Australia to win. India will win against south Africa. Pakistan can pack and leave. India and Australia to contest in final and India will win. Sewag to fire. Dhoni will come good too. Watch and see

Posted by Indian1508 on (October 2, 2012, 9:18 GMT)

@sutherland22 : I think you should get your facts checked.India is 2 times CWC champion,1 T20 WC winner and have been at the top of the ladder in Tests as well for more then 1 and half year..Your country England was "the minnow" of the tournament and they've clearly shown this to entire world that the last T20 WC victory was just a fluke.

Saw Dale Steyn near the Majestic city yesterday, at noon . Can somebody confirm this. He was wearing black cap with a black tee - shirt. Can't be anyone else!! Shouldn't he be practicing instead of going for a shopping spree. Or was it lunch?

SA is the best team but wont win bcoz always they does like that ...... India o rPak is depends i believe both will win and RR will decide whose gonna reach semis.......

Posted by A.J.KnightRider on (October 2, 2012, 8:58 GMT)

It would be a surprise to see Balaji sit out as he has been the best fast bowler for India so far, but given SA's confusion against spin, maybe that would be the preferable option, GO GO TEAM INDIA !!!!!

Posted by Newlandsfaithful on (October 2, 2012, 8:56 GMT)

Here's my SA team selection for India: Graeme Smith (c), Puttick, Kevin Pietersen (hey, why not! Don't really believe he'll play for England again...), Rilee Roussouw, Colin Ingram, Miller, Vilas (wk), Kleinveldt, Morris, Piedt, Con de Lange. Coach - Eric Simons. I reckon anything is better than the failed squad we have out there right now. As AB implied - nothing's working - so wouldn't it be fun to bring in a complete new squad with a new mindset? (I thought about Gerald Majola as an opener because you can never get him out, no matter what, but I didn't know if he would be available.)

Posted by aahahaa on (October 2, 2012, 8:54 GMT)

get rid of Levi. Faf and Kallis to open. Amla and Duminy and AB in that order. Pietersen Botha Parnel Steyn Morkel Totsobe and bat second

india always play its best whenever dere is do or die stuation. s.a have not been able to tackle with spin in d subcontinent conditions. they are hugely dependent on dere pace attack lead by steyn n morkel. indian batting line up is superb n has depth. regarding indian bowling, two specialist pacers n one specialist spinner will do with yuvi n kohli doing d middle bowling n picking some crucial wickets. for sure india will win. cheers.

Posted by Criktic on (October 2, 2012, 8:12 GMT)

I know we will loose against Australia, and India will be through Semis. And I believe they deserve to be as they are a better side. If not SA, than definitely India. Although India did play very well against Pak in the last match, still I wish umpires has been fair with some of their decisions that went against us.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 8:06 GMT)

Do not under estimate pakistan. Its a do or die for them too. Pakistan have had the better of australia in the recent past in this format. Watson coming in helps the cause though... Having said that it could all come down to run rate if pakistan win and that one ball margin against pakistan could hurt INDIA badly.... If sehwag fires India wins then forget then do hell with run-rate scenario. Its as simple as that.

Posted by sutherland22 on (October 2, 2012, 7:58 GMT)

So the Indians playing their last game of 2012 WC.That's irony isn't it? As a minnow team they forced to battle with all those mighty teams.

Posted by BellCurve on (October 2, 2012, 7:57 GMT)

If Pak loses against Aus, which is likely, then the Ind-SA match effectively becomes a quarter final. Only a very tight win over India (less than 4 runs) will see SA being eliminated based on net run rate. But then again, given their record in major tournaments, this is a fate that is certainly likely

Posted by TommytuckerSaffa on (October 2, 2012, 7:54 GMT)

Totally agree, AB is one of the most exciting batsmen today. I think the added stress of keeping takes away his batting ability and the fact that he is captain, he is too generous and bats other people above him. He should be a fielder and bat at 3. Get one of our youngsters in to do the keeping -Q De Kock looks good.

Posted by asvigneshbalaji on (October 2, 2012, 7:54 GMT)

First all the hype about dhoni i dont understand... He has the worst of strike rates among Indian players (meagre 109 for so called swashbucker), even ashwin, bhajji, irfan have better than him... The talks about sehwag, he shines once in a moon, and dhoni is exactly the same.. Dhoni is going the ganguly way, good leadership, but lacking batting skills... Next Indian bowler are lacking in strategy.. Except balaji, no bowler bowled even a bouncer... Spin dept should be left to ashwin alone.. Induction of bhajji is affecting team balance.. Ashwin along with Yuvi is more than enough.. If not services of raina or rohit can be taken... In t20 format sehwag must be there no matter what... In the current scenario, only Virat Kohli is giving an assurance in Indian batting.. PS:Dhoni can be dropped fa sometime to improve his batting along with sehwag.. Gambhir can lead the team well..

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 7:53 GMT)

@Lankanforever AB should certainly bat higher. I don't get why they have stuck with Levi for so long to be honest. He hasn't turned a single match in the tournament or against England earlier in the season. I am not keen on AB's captaincy in T20, against Pakistan he didn't bowl out the spinners that had them on the ropes. Against Australia there was no attacking field when we really needed the wickets etc. Botha would be the better T20 captain in my view. As for AB keeping, I am not sure we have another keeper batsman of the right quality and the SA fielding is usually a lot better than it was against AU... so I'm passing on that one!

Posted by Lloydster on (October 2, 2012, 7:47 GMT)

As a Saffa, the Proteas do not deserve to go thru to the semis as they have not adapted to the conditions and spin bowling, much the same as England. Why the coaches did not prepare the squad for this is beyond me. How Australia have adapted has been great and credit to them. The Proteas choked because of a lack of confidence in themselves , period.

Posted by PadMarley on (October 2, 2012, 7:43 GMT)

@kihtrak you seriously have to wake up man! SA should not be taken any lightly .. you might get a similar equation against you tonight... watchout!!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 7:42 GMT)

pak going to lose againist aus. india vil win today... semis.. sl vs aus and ind vs wi final... ind vs sl

Posted by andrew27994 on (October 2, 2012, 7:42 GMT)

Also I think Dhoni should promote himself up the order to No. 4 or 5 for 3 reasons: 1) He's dreadful when he comes in to bat in the death overs 2) He's the go-to man for India in crisis situations and he's proved it on so many occasions. 3) He is the best runner between the wickets. Hence, the runs will keep coming in 1s , 2s and 3s( if he's batting with Kohli especially)

Posted by mthi4life on (October 2, 2012, 7:33 GMT)

Its time for South Africa 2 take a gamble and open with Albie Morkel because Levi has been a walking wicket.I believe that if they play at their best then they will beat India. If SA makes it to the SF then they will win the World Cup.

Posted by Bruisers on (October 2, 2012, 7:32 GMT)

@Shuvo Mehedi - You should have instead hoped for a miracle to help Bangladesh qualify to the Super-8s. Maybe it would have worked. MAYBE.

Posted by msk123 on (October 2, 2012, 7:31 GMT)

Guys, This is my first post in cricinfo. Cricket is game of logic, phycological and pure skill based executing your talent. This game will be easy walk for India. Reason 1) SA has not won single game against India sofar, and they strugged in four occasion 2) Again SA is in a situation where enviornment is conducive to choke( reason they have not scored even single win series, and India tatsed their victory) 3) When you take player to player stratergy. Shewag knows Morne bowling well at the top and thats big factor unless other teams. Shewag record against NZ, SA is always good - This brings the cointest favor of India and I know Dhoni is not as fool as many here 4) Knowing Albie, and Faf dhoni knows how to charter his own CSK mates 5) If Kirsten knows how dhoni thinks, equally Shoni knows how Kirsten coaches and stratergises. 6) SA always poor player of spin in spin conducive enviornment 7) The only threat is steyn and If India negates, the gate is closed for SA and PAK.please publis

Posted by Bruisers on (October 2, 2012, 7:30 GMT)

@James Anderson (Jothipal) - Which is the only tough team SL has faced so far in the tournament? That's right, its South Africa - the same team that literally demolished the so-called lions. SL have had an easy ride so far, so save your comments for the semis.

Posted by DaCricketFan on (October 2, 2012, 7:30 GMT)

Good luck team India. We love you guys despite all the silly comments against us by your silly fans. Have a great game.. Cheers!

Posted by andrew27994 on (October 2, 2012, 7:28 GMT)

If Yuvraj is not 100% fit then he should not play this match. Also I cant remember a time where he had much success against SA. I know he is a useful bowling option but Raina and Sehwag are competent part-timers who could be used if needed. Also even without Yuvraj the batting lineup is good enough and India must strengthen the bowling attack.

I know many of my fellow Indian fans would disapprove of that suggestion because of Yuvraj's overall success in the format but it's hard to remove Rohit Sharma who on the other hand has had success against SA so his confidence will be high against them. SA have had the better of Yuvraj with the short ball so its better to rest him JUST FOR THIS MATCH

I know that there's no way Dhoni would do this because if India lose everyone would blame and criticise him for that move.

Anyways its just an idea which I feel that would work for India.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 7:27 GMT)

Also, get Ashok Dinda in place of Balaji. So, the team should be - Sehwag, Tiwary, Kohli, Raina, Yuvaraj, Dhoni, Irfan, Bhajji, Zahir, Ashwin, Dinda

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 7:25 GMT)

Today, India should keep Gambhir out and get Majoj Tiwary in. Also, keep Rohit Sharma out and get Harbhajan in.

Posted by Akshay.Sekhri on (October 2, 2012, 7:23 GMT)

Dear Cricinfo, After his horrible performance at Punditry when are you planning to fire Sanjay Manjrekar, the only thing India should do is what he says it should not do. Coming to this game, if anything Harbhajan should be back against SA as they will toast Balaji.

Posted by Naresh28 on (October 2, 2012, 7:22 GMT)

@vinaykmr - have been following those challenger games. Some great batting by pujara,Vijay, Dhawan, Saha and Rahane. Vijay excites me as a recall opener for test team. Rahane and Dhawan as well. Pujara could come into odi squad. In NZ INDIA A openers not giving outstanding batting scores. The selectors need to keep tabs on openers.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 7:21 GMT)

i think dhoni like to loose allll game at the stake of rohit sharma and the selectors also got noboby else to choose from this big country they just want to wait for rohit come get his form back thats why didnot win because over here names are bigger than ur talent

Posted by raj_gt on (October 2, 2012, 7:18 GMT)

@ Madhu Chanaka: Are you choosing a comparatively poor opposition for srilanka in Semi ?

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (October 2, 2012, 7:16 GMT)

@Akhilesh Mishra on (October 02 2012, 04:42 AM GMT)...I agree Tiwary is good, but comparing him with Chawla and preferring Tiwary over Chawla is bad option. It is because Chawla may be not doing great, but we should remember that he is a specialist bowler. A specalist bowler knows it better how to handle bowling at tight situations than a non-specalist like Tiwar. So Chawla is better over Tiwary if Dhoni goes to leg spin. Tiwary has no place in team. Where will you fit him??

Posted by LionCulture on (October 2, 2012, 7:15 GMT)

I love to see India wining this game and then meet us in the semis to get a good thrash...but they're going to get hammered by SAs very badly today...feel sorry for the so called "Team India" who plays no proper cricketing shots except for kholi and rohit...just flat track bullies who have no clue over short balls...sry neighbors! you can't do it!

Why is nobody talking about the weakest link in the South African team Mr. Farhaan Behardein? If SA wants to make a match out of this, they should refrain from dropping Levi and should instead make Behardein sit out

to dhoni : since the part timers are doing good i think india should go in with the same previous team(against pak). to indian openers :dont get aggressive in the power play.even 30 in 6 overs without a wicket will be a headache to the opposition bowlers

All the best India. Predictions of the match, Sehwag a breezy 50 of 23 balls, Virat goes on to make a impressive 70 odd, a blistering 40 from MSD in 14 balls giving a India total of 170+.... Ashwin taking 3 for 17 & Yuvi 2 for 20 seals the match for India, SA loose by 50 odd runs and India take on SL in SF 1 :)

@Akhilesh Mishra on (October 02 2012, 04:42 AM GMT)..I mistakenly posted a 10 member team. I later noticed it. I rectified it though. You can check my team which i want to play...Coming to Sehwag, Dhoni won't use him for reasons of his own also adding to that Sehwag is playing with some niggles so Dhoni might not ask Sehwag to bowl. Yuvraj on other hand is good player and he was man of tournament in 2011 WC too..but we should not forget that this match is must win game for SA and SA batsman will come hard at us, and as Zaheer is out of form, it is more of concern in bowling. De villers had his intentions clear that his team play out of skin today after that 2 losses.I can guarentee that fight from Saffers. So, why should we risk with 4 bowlers?? Yuvraj if have a bad day , whom shall we depend on to take wickets in middle overs...??

Posted by Lankanforever on (October 2, 2012, 6:43 GMT)

I really don't get few facts about some players playing certain rolls. specially AB. AB is the best outfielder you could find in the world I guess at the moment. the world is really missing his acrobatic fielding moves. They could have played a good keeper batsmen in the place of Behardien and also AB should bat higher at 3 or 4 to really get the advantage of having such classy batsman in the team. he is too gooder fielder to stay behind the stumps. what do you think South African fans?

Posted by Baber_Baloch on (October 2, 2012, 6:37 GMT)

why not imran tahir in SA side he is good spin bowler.

Posted by indiabadri on (October 2, 2012, 6:33 GMT)

I really dont understand why Raina has not been given batting opportunity. He is good against spin bowling, pace bowling and also clean hitter. He is better bet at 4 compared to Yuvi who is yet to regain his full form and Rohit who is not at all fit. If Raina plays 20 balls i am sure he will score 35 runs and why he has not been given a ball to bowl. Dhoni doesnt want Raina to take crucial wickets it seems........

in the game of t20, all that matters is the pressure and i think there are rarely few in the world who does the job of putting the opposition under pressure than, the idea of dropping sehwag is senseless

India will lost & Pak vs Aus in to the semi's SL vs PAK 1st Semi Final

Posted by bouncer1021 on (October 2, 2012, 6:06 GMT)

I am not sure if this has been mentioned but Pakistan and Aussies have a disadvantage now. If Pakistan wins, SA will look at India's game as a dead rubber. Good for India to get the win and the NRR. Looks like the lady luck is with India now.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 6:02 GMT)

Proteas are a far better team than the Indians. Its luck that is not favouring them. They could have easily won against Pakistan.Still the proteas have a great chance of making to the semis.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 5:58 GMT)

i wish that india win today. SURELY they will win of SA are not in form and will never make it

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 5:47 GMT)

I want to be positive but based on their history, and yes I will say it - tendency to choke in critical games, I do not believe the Proteas will make it. It seems like India may be peaking at the right time and they will have plenty of support to edge them on. Combine all of the above with that great man Kholi (who looks like he may become a legend) and their impressive spinning abilities (SA's weakness), it is a virtually impossible feat for SA to pull off. If SA do make it to the semi's, it will be very lucky and we can still look forward to another failure in the Semi's. Am I cynic? yes, after 20 years of seeing SA fail in world cups, that's exactly what I am.

@WC2011Champs - Couldn't agree more with you about Raina. He's far too dynamite material to be left so low below. All that bull about his weakness with the short ball should be bottled now. When was the last time anyone remembers him getting out to a short ball? In these conditions, he can go at 140 strike rate, and take the game away from the opposition. Also, he can run like a hare for 50 overs if required.

India should go with Harbhajan instead of balaji......and sehwag should open with gambhir.....and Mr. talented should be replaced by Tiwary....

I missed Kohli name in earlier post. I re-post the team i wish to play against SA: Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli, Yuvraj, Rohit, Dhoni, Pathan, Ashwin, Piyush Chawla/ Harbhajan, Balaji, Zaheer. Raina to be missed out in this game.

Posted by VivtheGreatest on (October 2, 2012, 4:44 GMT)

We should go in with 5 bowlers, either Raina or Rohit should sit out and I'd prefer Bhajji over Chawla due to his experience and big-match temperament

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 4:42 GMT)

@Praveen4honestremark : in ur quest for honesty haven't u missed out on a very's played by 11 players :-) aren't u missing out on someone who's been the only shining light in batting for team India virat for the question of playing 5 bowlers, with yuvraj being Indians highest wicket taker so far in tournament n the 3 spinner theory failing miserably against aussies don't feel there's a need for a Bhajji/Chawla..dhoni needs to use sehwag's bowling skills who is a more than useful off spinner not afraid of giving flight n also doesnt resort to bowling flat n fast like bhajji if hit..for a leg spinning option tiwary should be considered in place of rohit sharma..enough chances hve already been wasted on him to display his supreme talent n similarly tiwary has been doing water duties for a bit too long..scoring a hundred, a fifty & taking 4 wickets in his last given opportunities..what else can one ask from a player?

Posted by terrifyingwarriors on (October 2, 2012, 4:41 GMT)

I have a feeling that India is going to WIN big today! They are a strong team on papers, its show time today!! With all due respect to African team I hope India Trash SA just to get a world of confidence, they need it before Semi's.

Posted by Alexk400 on (October 2, 2012, 4:39 GMT)

Someone said Dhoni should open in T20. I think i agree. Problem is Dhoni is afraid he will get out. I think he is best opener because he do not lose his wicket and you have to take it from him. he can play gully cricket and gets awkward singles. But he is weak against new ball outside off stump. So he won't open. if SA plans well and do not over use bouncer but use it to create dot ball then pressure mounts on indian. if SA can bowl all ball in chest height to indian , SA will win wihout a doubt. Kallis is best at it. if SA is in it for a fight they can win. But normally they gave it away because they always lack kinda unity. They bat alone , bowl alone. SA need plans to choke run rate. Kohli do not like ball chest height with his low bat position. Gambir is a poker outside off stump. Actually everyone knows every one weakness. It is matter of who execute as a team.

Posted by Joby_George on (October 2, 2012, 4:37 GMT)

Sehwag is not at all on touch. He is totally out of form. Its good that he was selected against paksitan because they fears him most and that will give an physiological advantage to india. for Match against SA, drop Sehwag and play and extra bowler. Let Patan open again and let him play little more aggressively.

Posted by sutherland22 on (October 2, 2012, 4:37 GMT)

SA can have some practice today before the SF's.Pressure match bt fortunately SA got a minnow team to face.should give some chances to their middle/lower order players in this match.should promote some of them up the batting order. That way they can give some exposure to them before the big games.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 4:36 GMT)

Never trust Rohith Sharma, even though some forces are trying to keep him in the eleven, he should bat only after Dhoni. Raina should be utilized up the order ie after Kohli or after Yuvi. Come on Dhoni take my advice...... I know you are reader of Cricinfo ;-)

Posted by Alexk400 on (October 2, 2012, 4:30 GMT)

For me india will win the match. Dhoni vs Devillers. Dhoni wins it. Dhoni drop sehwag and play pathan? i doubt that. i doubt pathan survive against steyn and morkel. if sehwag plays and gets out india would be in more problem. i would send kallis to open against india if i am devillers. Save few wicket initially and go bang bang agsint bhaji. Devillers smack indian spinners. if indians see kaliis , they know they are in a fight. sehwag survves first 5 overs , game over for SA. But i think kallis has to open for SA to win. Early loss of wicket put SA in run gathering mode.

Posted by TommytuckerSaffa on (October 2, 2012, 4:28 GMT)

Just don't see SA winning this. Their T20 team simply is not good enough and they dont put much emphasis on this format of the game. Average players continue to get picked (Ontong, Parnell and Pietersen) and good players are watching the game at home. The Team looks nowhere set. We have a serious opening batting issues where levi keeps getting out and looks totally hopeless against spin and a batting line up that is ALWAYS changing. I think you need at least 2 class spinners in SL and SA only have one.

Posted by George_cricket on (October 2, 2012, 4:16 GMT)

Hey,dropping balaji would be grave. reputation can not fell wickets and hence he is above shaheer and harbajan. these two are aqt the verge of exiting from their ipl teams also. please go through the data and statistics.

Posted by indiabadri on (October 2, 2012, 4:11 GMT)

India should consider SA weekness and consider Piyush Chawla in place of Zaheer Khan. Zaheer does not have variety and will go for plenty against them. Rohit should be considered as 16th man in the team and sent out from srilanka immediately. Manoj Tiwary should be given a chance for this match. My Playing 11 today will be 1. Viru 2. Gauti 3. Kohli 4. Raina 5. Yuvi 6. Manoj 7. MSD 8. Irfan 9. Ashwin 10. Piyush 11. Balaji. Balaji is a intelligent bowler compared to zaheer who keeps on bowling down the leg side and our keeper doesnt want to hurt his body so it goes for boundaries. If they play this 11 India can comfortably defeat SA. Two men normally scores against India is Kallis and Amla. They need to strategise against these 2.

india should send pathan opening. if india do not lose wicket in first 4 overs and 30 runs. It would be excellant. Because pathan alos can play short ball. I will drop sehwag next game also and play 5 bowlers. Duncan fletcher in my mind tells me.

@WC2011Champs: In what universe are Sachin and Dravid comparable to Rohit Sharma. Rohit has been around for more than 5 years, lets analyze that. Sachin (1989-) in 1994-95 was mainstay of Indian batting and Dravid (1996-) in 2001 was already a legend. And as far as Laxman (1997-) goes, he played almost as many ODIs in his career as Rohit has already, but in Tests which were his forte, like Dravid he was already a class apart in 2001-02. I am not saying Rohit is a poor player but he has had quite a few chances. And don't tell me that he does not get to play tests. Do you really believe that not playing tests stops a good player from being good in limited overs cricket? Besides, to me it seems that Rohit has been selected just cause he looks good hitting fours (rarely). No other team on the planet selects a player on the basis of how excuisite his cover drive looks, they choose them cause their shots get runs and they get out at lesser frequency than others.

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (October 2, 2012, 1:32 GMT)

I want this set of players playing against SA.----> Sehwag, Gambhir, Rohit , Yuvraj, Dhoni, Pathan, Ashwin, Piyush chawla/ Harbhajan,Balaji, Zaheer. I am suspecting that SA may attack our left arm part time spinner Yuvraj. If he fails, whom should be look for for taking wickets??? We need an extra bowler. I would suggest 6+5 against SA as batsman like Amla, Kallis, Ab play well when it comes to India. So to stop them we need 5 bowlers. Batsman need to take responsibilty. And that from Gambhir, Dhoni, need more responsibility in batting and it will do.

@Rockstar. SL does not have worldclass players or superstars. Team India is FULL of Champions but not a championship team. SL is a championship team but without individual champions. Australia is in the same mould. Sadly I was in attendance when team India got white washed by Australia. Indians has started this 20/20 cricket but now struggling to qualify in their own backyard on flat wickets. I thought you guys were the kings of flat pitches. Its shame that Team India still cant handle fast bowlers such as Cummings, Finn and Heyn etc. Sorry guys enjoy beautiful Kandy and safe trip back home. Aus/SL final. India good luck next time.

Posted by BG4cricket on (October 2, 2012, 0:55 GMT)

Sth Africa should bowl if they win the toss and will need wickets from Steyn and Morkel to be a chance. I would open the batting with AB and Amla, with Kallis and Duminy to follow and then du Plessis (in for Levi) as AB needs to face more deliveries so his class can have an impact on the game. If they get Kohli early India may struggle (although the rest are decent) and the Indian bowling would benefit from a real rejig - personally I would have Pathan, Harbajan, Ashwin and Balaji as Yuvraj, Virat and Raina/Sharma can cover the rest - this looks the most dangerous attack based on form. Will be a cracker with plenty on the line if Australia can get over Pakistan in the earlier game as the form would suggest.

This will also take care of a lousy fielder that Zak is and also bring in a fresh talent in place of continually failing Gambhir. Also whoever is calling for Rohit's head must check their heads checked first. The guy has failed in just 1 match and here they come like storm-troopers criticizing him. Both Rohit & Tiwary IN.Hopeless Gambhir & listless liability Zak out. This team could thump any side not least SA..Go India!! One comment on the scared SL fans who were vociferous in support for Pak,even at the ground,BEWARE we're coming after ya!

Posted by WC2011Champs on (October 1, 2012, 23:59 GMT)

Lets analyze past records and players for spotting a future star. Has there been a recognized batsman who failed and failed first and then continued on to break batting records? In other words has it ever happened that a Sachin or a Dravid or a Laxman had a string of failures in early stages of their careers? Why do selectors, captain, coach think that Rohit Sharma would be any different? There are clear signs when a batsman is on ascent and will go on to make it big. Virat being the latest example. Even if he has a slump now the past year or two of consistent performances are indication that he belongs. Meanwhile in the present t20 medley Raina is losing out on cementing his number 4 spot and Tiwary is not even that lucky.

Posted by   on (October 1, 2012, 23:30 GMT)

@Rockstar50, no world class players you say? Mahela, Dilshan, Malinga and Mendis are 4 of the best T20 cricketers around, with Sanga being one of the all time greats across all formats. Insane how you under-performing Indians (still unsure of their chances this world cup) can run down a peaking Lanka (who are already through). First focus on how your side can manage to get through

Posted by   on (October 1, 2012, 23:18 GMT)

India should send in Irfan Pathan at number 3 since he is a good player of pace and not expose the middle order to Steyn/Morne. Piyush Chawla in place of Zaheer/Balaji might be interesting .....

Posted by WC2011Champs on (October 1, 2012, 23:10 GMT)

Yuvraj is still good to be in the team for his bowling. Just drop him to number 7 in batting order. Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli, Raina, Johri or Dhoni (depending on how many overs left), Yuvraj, Pathan, Ashwin, Bhajji, Zaheer. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THE CONSTANT EXPERIMENTATION AT NUMBER 4 SLOT. THAT SLOT SO BELONGS TO RAINA. This is NOT test cricket. This is T20 and ODI. I agree he is a failure in test cricket but there is no better batsmen than Raina in T20 and ODI. He is clean hitter of the ball, has excellent strike rate and is very consistent. He is being wasted at number 6 or 7. He should raise his hand up and fight back for his spot, verbally and literally if needed. When Yuvraj is 100% back then he can challenge Raina for that spot. It is unfair that captain, coach, the people who are always clubbing Raina's name with other non-performers like Rohit fail to understand Raina's contributions and importance in shorter formats.

Posted by   on (October 1, 2012, 22:29 GMT)

I think making a place for H Singh in stead of one left handed medium pacer will be reasonable enough, and Zaheer can make the way as he is not impressive in this format.

Posted by wonderstar1 on (October 1, 2012, 21:14 GMT)

Posted by nickmaniar on (October 1, 2012, 21:09 GMT)

Neither harbhajan or Chawla have impressed (except for one match). Yuvraj has performed better with the ball and India can play him as a second spinner. In slow pitches like ones against pakistan, Balaji will be really effective. If India does want to play a spinner, take off Pathan (half batsman-half bowler) and play the spinner because if 6 batsman cannot score runs you cannot expect a half batsman to save you

Posted by Feroz9700 on (October 1, 2012, 20:53 GMT)

Captain Dhoni should go in with the same team with the cushion of an Extra Batsman b'coz South Arfican's r going to try and bounce the Indian batsman out since the Indian batsmen don't quite play the horizontal bat shots, they r simply atrocious against short pitched bowling especially if the bowlers clocks 140 KMPH plus. Indian batsman should try and go back and across when pulling bowlers of genuine pace b'coz that will give them extra bit of time to send the ball into the stands instead of scooping simple catches. I doubt if the South African quick's will pitch anything up tomorrow. Most important concern that I have is with Rohit Sharma, he seems to be struggling against quick bowlers and Indian middle order could be tested tomorrow. Indian bowling looks good and Captain Dhoni should not drop a seamer for a spinner b'coz Indian's has too many spin bowling options but only 3 quicks so if in case it rains then India needs seamers.

CMON India. Good thing is India will know before the game starts if Pakistan have won or lost meaning if Pak win India will preciously know how many runs they will need to win by.

I know it is too early to expect, but I "sooo" want another great batting performance by Virat Kohli. I hope AB Devilliers doesn't set up a very dificult field placement for Kohli; since they practiced together during the IPL,he might know his weaknesses. However South Africa would play with their hearts tomorrow to make it to the Semi Final!! A lot of pressure on Kohli. And we all know he makes sure that his team qualifies at situations like this.

Two highly unreliable teams are playing and result could be anyone's guess. Both teams are so similar and unpredictable. A lot of talent and a lot of unreliability.

I am just worried about one thing --- Gary Kirsten. He was India's coach through the world cup which made India the winners. He's knows each and every player in the team and their weaknesses if any. I just hope and pray that what ever Gary might provide some keys or secrets about India to SA, India should outclass Gary on that. All the very best to team India from Chicago. Most likely tomorrow AUS will win and most likely IND is going to sail through as well for the semis. Most likely i think we are going to see a final between IND Vs AUS. Which could be anyone's game making any team a champion outta Ind & Aus. Good luck India.

India will win the match...Also no chance for Pakistan..

Come-on South Africa...thrash India out from the world cup! make hard, bouncy pitch and India will allout under 140.

South Africa/ Proteas has many problems, one of them being strangely not picking the best team. With Q. Friend and several stalwart batsmen watching on TV from home, the decision yet to leave Albie Morkel out at the last minute raises the eyebrow. No player succeeds in every one of the games in this lottery format, but Albie has proven himself quite a few times over the years in all disciplines. In addition the strange lack of form of the famous SA players in every ICC tournament has almost become amusing. The IPL and other successes are very hard to understand in the context of how these players are playing right now. Why Parnell is playing at all in such crucial matches...Anyway Gary loses very few internationals in his presence so lets hope some of that rubs off.

India should play the same XI as against Pakistan. Dhoni says he wishes to see if the pitch is a turner. If they need an extra spinner then replace Rohit Sharma with Tiwary for a leg spin option. A wrist spinner like Tiwary will extract more turn! Why 2 off spinners in Ashwin & Harbhajan? Sehwag is as good an off spinner as Harbhajan, if needed.Tiwary is as good as Rohit in batting & more reliable. Dhoni must avoid using Kohli to bowl 3 overs!.Both ZAK & Irfan bowled poorly against Pakistan- Balaji compensated for their poor showing. I wish to advise Dhoni to bowl both ZAK & Irfan their full quota of 4 overs in a single spell with the new ball. These 2 are strictly new ball bowlers & bowl bad first overs. However, once they settle they seem to bowl well. Sehwag & Gambhir must give India a great start vs. Steyn & Morkel. India needs to play hard,as a team (everyone contributing), if they have any chance of winning. They must repeat their grit shown vs. Pakistan to WIN. Lets Go India!

all SA need is proper planning, which they again missed against AUS !! steyn and morkel bowled only 3-3 overs each. replace levi with faf, parnell with albie.

SA will be vary to the slow/spin bowling attack that India has. Other than that, SA seems to be well placed. I guess their confidence is low now, but having Gary as their coach helps them a lot in this match!! Gary must be fresh on his mind about how MSD thinks in such crucial games!! No wonder, SA has fair enough chance to win this game and book the semi's berth !!

MSD must be aware that Gary is on his opposite now, and act accordingly. I think he is clever enough to change strategies per situation. I hope India can clinch a "decent" enough win to secure a spot in Semi's. I wrote "Decent", just to mean that PAK has the ability to easily beat AUS and compete for a SEMI's spot. In such case, a simple win for India cant assure a seat in the SEMI final.

All the best to SA and India! may the BEST team win!!

Parnell and A Morkel are both expensive seamers, but at least Albie strengthens the batting. Given all the part time bowling options why select Parnell? SA needs all the batting it can get, particularly with the net run rate scenario. And AB should get all the time in the middle he can, like India use Kohli. It's madness having him come in at 5/6.

why should balaji sit out?? why not zaheer ??

We haven't played well enough in the key moments. We should have won the Pakistan game. It is disappointing that we have had opportunities to close out gam

How quickly freinds become foes in life? Gary kirsten will be against the team which he helped to win world cup. That's how life goes:)

This match is going to be a quarterfinal match, as Pakistan will be out of this World Cup after the heavy defeat to mighty Aussies. Best of luck India and SA

Comr on AB u can do it.....just do it make the blue bleed in red....

Posted by GlobalCricketLover on (October 1, 2012, 18:10 GMT)

Can anyone, ANYONE, please tell me one good reason why Behardien is in the side.. He is supposed to be a specialist batsman and he never looked like he was playing a T20 match.. what on earth did Kirsten see in him!! He just comes and stalls whatever run rate SA struggle to maintain...Albie should come in for him.. and may be Tsotsobe in the place of parnell...This world cup SA is killing itself with senseless selection.. Levi? Behardien? Wasn't Kirsten or AB not watching IPL and how Levi was a walking wicket???

Lets Go Team INDIA. One Billion people are cheering for you and lets get the cup back home.

How is rohit sharma has good outing? He failed in last two matches in that count. It is unbelievable what is author looking in rohit sharma. He is useless against short bowling especially against south africa who can bowl short

leave out greame smith and pay the penalty for it

@ Nampally : Where are you buddy... Waiting for your expert advice.... Im sure Team India is awaiting u too.........

Posted by cooljack_143 on (October 1, 2012, 17:43 GMT)

Rohit(no need for extra batsmen, but very good fielder)/Zaheer(average bowling&poor fielding) out & Bhajji in(just spin factor)..This will be the only way Ind can win...Dropping Balaji would be foolish on their part.Ind should forget that its only coz of balaji they were able to outplay Pak both in wickets&runs scored against Bala...Zaheer needs to sit out for sure..But would MSD dare to do it..If something happens then all Ind will be upon him for his tactical decison against Sehwag where they eventually lost..Hoping for a big win for Ind & Obviously bang bang from the the two W's.....

come on india!!!!!!!!!!! we r back of u.... it's time gauti and viru to give a good start to the team..not more atleast 50 runs in the first six overs up against dale and morne could do a lot of confidence to the middle order ... and india must bowl again, the ganguly if ur bowlers r not able to defend totals trust ur batsmens to chase any total.....anticipating for this match...a win the tichet to semi final....chak de india
