Bangalore v Kochi, IPL 2011, Bangalore May 8, 2011

The 37-run over

ESPNcricinfo staff
The third over of Bangalore's innings, bowled by Prasanth Parameswaran, cost 37 runs. Here's how Chris Gayle did it
  shares 67

2.1 SIX, Sorry, it's Gayle who is into the attack, makes room, gets under a length ball, opens the face, and clears point easily.

2.2 (no ball) SIX, this is ridiculous. Demolition. Slower ball, in his swinging arc, and he lofts it over point again. What's more? It's a no-ball.

2.2 FOUR, Short ball, at this gentle pace, murdered past midwicket.

2.3 FOUR, Mahela said at the toss he had plans for Gayle. Right. The plan seems to have four to five men on the off-side circle and bowl back of a length. PP does just does that, and he punches it between extra cover and cover.

2.4 SIX, Carnage. Gayle makes room, wallops a length ball over cover. He has taken this Go Green campaign seriously, and will finish this before flood lights can come on

2.5 SIX, Where do you hide when Dilshan and Gayle are going like this? He is toying around with them. Comes down the track and goes straight this time. 91 metres. Over the sight screen.

2.6 FOUR, inside edge, but that too goes wide of the keeper for four. This is robbery in day light. Bangalore are demolishing Kochi. In case you didn't notice, 37 runs came off this over.

IPL is low standard cricket. You wont see these things in International Cricket more often, but IPL ........

Powershots! No wonder Gayle is one of the destructive batsman of this generation. I also liked the 'Malingasque' way in which Vinay Kumar bowled Gayle. That ball was a beauty and Gayle looked perplexed for a minute. If Vinay can unearth such Malinga like deliveries now and then, he can be a very serious bowler to reckon with in IPL.

Chris Gayle is very average most of the time, but when he actually hits a ball, he really hits it.

@Syed Yasser - "Its not the right thing to hit on young growing bowlers this total disgrace to cricket !". Look carefully at those words that you wrote. U seem to be the disgrace here. This is the big boys league, it could happen to any bowler.

@syed Yasser - hit on young bowlers is a total disgrace to cricket? Hope you are joking.. This is not a school cricket mate. btw Parameswaran should not get demotivated because of this, he should take Stuart Broad as the example to rise from that awful International 36 runs a over.. After all Broad is the T20 captain now.

Completely agree with Ahsan_Shere. This is after all a competition, you cant take your ball home if the big boys are hitting it too far! If you cant stand the heat, stay out of the IPL!

  • POSTED BY on | May 9, 2011, 10:24 GMT

there is no use in blaming gayle ppl he was bowling in the wrong place and i if u all do not want a youngster to be hit then u should hv blamed the captain for giving the youngster the over. brilliant innings no doubt

Sir Garry Sobers hit Malcoom Nash for 6 sixes whilst playing for Notts v Glamorgan back in the 60s.

At Syed Yasser: If he's a younger bowler then he shouldn't be playing in IPL. 'Disgrace to cricket' what you wants to say by this phrase? & what about Gibbs hitting six sixes in an over? Yuvraj also hit six sixes to a bowler who havn't played even 30 ODIs then.

before this, commentators were talking abt bowler parameswaran as talent and will be under the RADAR of Indian selectors, Gayle destroyed the RADAR itself...NOW all young bowlers will have their career deciding spells against Gayle...

  • POSTED BY on | May 9, 2011, 7:03 GMT

We know Gayle has no foot work to play quality bowling whether spin or pace. He butchers innocent bowling the best batsman against weak bowling the same may be said about Shewaq to a lesser extent.

  • POSTED BY on | May 9, 2011, 6:07 GMT

As far as my knowledge goes... when 6 or 4 scored by a batsman on no-ball the batsman get that many runs and extra run of No-ball does not go to batsman and it goes to team total as EXTRAS. So when Gayle scored 4x6 + 3x4 he should get 36 in that over and team gets 37. Can anybody corrects me if I am wrong

  • POSTED BY on | May 9, 2011, 4:53 GMT

If he keep hitting like this in IPL, he might finish IPL 2011 season ending CAREER of Many BOWLERS..........

  • POSTED BY on | May 9, 2011, 3:29 GMT

Should have seen this extraordinary bowling effort :P :D

  • POSTED BY rayinto on | May 9, 2011, 3:26 GMT

Take that Hilaire. Now will you admit you did West Indies wrong? Gayle deserves to be in any team in the world, but you choose to leave him out of the West Indies. How many more such innings do you need to convince you? You must be both deaf and blind at the same time.

  • POSTED BY Vnott on | May 9, 2011, 3:19 GMT

Gayle can kill anyone i guess barring malinga ( who also may go sometimes )... But Geoff Lawsons politics ( why cant these aussie coaches do anything sensible) and Mahela joining him - keeping sreesanth out is one of the most ridiculous decisions ever taken. Sree has got his rhythm working and is a dangerous wicket taking bowler when he does that. Playing Powar, Parameswaran ahead of Sree - some cricket sense here. Mahela has lost a fan with the insipid captaincy. Though not expecting miracles ( with such a low score), I still think Sree would have made inroads if he played making it a bi more competitive.

  • POSTED BY on | May 9, 2011, 1:26 GMT

Well..Being a Kochi supporter i still enjoyed the hitting but at the same time i heart opened out to the bowler. Now i want to see someone make him look ordinary at the crease. And i guess Malinga is the MAN!!!

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2011, 23:17 GMT

Sreesanth would be hiding a smile

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2011, 19:07 GMT

I always thought Gayle is only competition Viru had to be called "most dangerous batsman of our time" .They both got double triple centuries.Just as Viru got his first ton @ t20 Chris matched it with more explosive one n now this ...come on Viru its time Dynamite should belong to India rather than Jamaica..

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2011, 18:56 GMT

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2011, 18:29 GMT

West Indies Cricket board, please wake up. You are missing the power and onslaught of Gayle force. Two centuries and this murderous onslaught is enough to prove his calibre. Well its good for IPL. CAN ANY ONE WAKE THE CRICKET BOARD OF WEST INDIES. LEAVING TAYLOR, GAYLE AND OTHERS,.... WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO FOR THE WEST INDIES CRICKET. THEY ARE GOING TO KILL THE WEST INDIES CRICKET SKILLS ... DEFINETLLY. LET THE WORLD LAUGHT AT THEIR ACT... " A BUNCH OF JOKKERS" the famous words of jimmy is comming true ?

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2011, 18:26 GMT

this is best over in the iplt20 go R.C.B go g

  • POSTED BY kris_mg on | May 8, 2011, 16:08 GMT

Wow.. awesome Gayle.. And for the question why dont play in this vein for WI.. its simple.. compare the batting lineups... RCB has Dilshan Kohli and awesome AB de Villiers in their lineup so Gayle has the opportunity to play freely knowing that his effort will be backed up even in case of a one off failure (which I cant see coming any time soon in his current form..).. When playing for Windies, if he goes over aggressive and looses his wicket all blame will come on him and we have seen how prone to implosion the WI batting line up is.. So he has to curb his natural game.. Also with the situation between the WICB and the players going from bad to worse i guess every player plays with one eye over the shoulder... Anyway.. now Gayle has the additional motivation from that snub from WICB for which he is replying with every big score he is scoring in IPL...

  • POSTED BY celicabai on | May 8, 2011, 15:56 GMT

Kumaranuj...you said it, i always wonder the same thing, him and Pollard always perform for other teams and not for West Indies. But i'm happy that they're making the money.

  • POSTED BY Cric_Wizard on | May 8, 2011, 15:54 GMT

I laugh at the WI cricket board...imagine them sitting now and watching this destruction. Gayle is a monster....With him around, they just may have upset Pakistan..

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2011, 15:53 GMT

  • POSTED BY Kumaranuj on | May 8, 2011, 14:54 GMT
