Kings XI Punjab v Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2012, Dharamsala May 19, 2012

Delhi knock out Punjab and take top spot

46

Delhi Daredevils 145 for 4 (Warner 79) beat Kings XI Punjab 141 for 8 (Chitnis 38, Mahmood 36, Morkel 4-20, Yadav 3-19) by six wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Delhi Daredevils confirmed their standing as the team to beat with a fearsome opening burst from their fast bowlers, Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav, before a typically brutal David Warner innings pretty much guaranteed top spot. Kings XI Punjab, one of the lower-profile teams in the tournament, managed to stay alive till the final weekend of the league phase but couldn't make it to the playoffs as a power-packed Daredevils line-up dismantled them with ease on a spicy pitch in Dharamsala. The result also meant that Mumbai Indians became the third team to qualify for the playoffs.

On one of the best tracks for fast bowlers in the IPL this season, Daredevils stacked their team with five quicks, four of whom could nudge the 90-mph mark. Morkel and Yadav were virtually unplayable with the new ball, and by the end of the Powerplay overs, Kings XI were reduced to 20 for 4 and their campaign was seemingly over.

Mandeep Singh has been Kings XI's most prolific batsman this season, but he fell for a golden duck as he was drawn into nibbling an away-cutter from Yadav to the keeper. Adam Gilchrist has a century and two fifties in his last three innings in Dharamsala but he was dismissed cheaply this time, top-edging a pull, in what might well be his final competitive innings.

Paul Valthaty's disastrous season continued, as he flailed about in his comeback game against some high-quality pace from Yadav and Morkel before finally holing out for a ten-ball 2. The biggest blow, though, was in the sixth over, when Yadav got Hussey to mishit a shortish ball to mid-on. Yadav finished his first spell with the figures of 3-1-4-3.

Kings XI have been written off before, only to repeatedly show they were no pushovers. They proved it again as Azhar Mahmood, who has been instrumental to Kings XI's fight this season, stabilised the innings with a 57-run stand with Siddharth Chitnis. Both struggled to time the ball early on, but some freebies from Andre Russell helped them find their feet.

There has been a clamour for Russell's inclusion this season, especially given Ross Taylor's horror run with the bat but the allrounder had a day to forget, leaking 51 runs on a day when no one else in his team went at more than 6.25. His worst over was the 17th, which was taken for 22 runs with Gurkeerat powering three boundaries, before Mahmood rounded it off with two more. That lifted the run-rate above six for the first time in the innings.

Kings XI finished with 141, which seemed enough to challenge a Daredevils side missing both Virender Sehwag and Taylor. Those hopes were dashed once Warner unleashed those familiar hits over long-on and midwicket, again highlighting the number of match-winners Daredevils have in their squad.

It wasn't a flawless innings from Warner, who was hit by a bouncer from Ryan Harris early on, edged plenty and was put down at midwicket by Mandeep. That drop came at the end of an over in which Warner had muscled three sixes and a four off Parvinder Awana. Twenty-three came off that over as Awana, who went for only 12 in his four overs last game, watched helplessly.

Warner chopped the first ball of the next over to bring up his 50 off 25 balls on a pitch where most batsmen struggled. He couldn't add to his collection of Twenty20 centuries, though, as he slapped Harris to Mandeep at point in the 13th over. There was a brief lull in the scoring after that, but with the required-rate just above four, Daredevils were never really in trouble of losing.

Dhoni nothing to prove anything. He has won T20 WC, 1day WC and india was in NO.1 position in all formats as long as he was in good form. As CSK captain he won 2 times IPL champ and one time CLT20 Champ. What else a player and captain has to prove. This all about luck means, pls dont promote any player as captain without luck. Why you people want promote somebody as captain for loosing the matches. As CSK fan I agree his decision went wrong few matches in this season. One is against K11punjab @chennai and another one agaist MI @ mumbai. Instead of taking about dhoni boys other teams utilise the opportunity what chennai missed. Overall it is very clear that if CSK gives chance to other teams than they can win Otherwise they are nothing.

Hey siri1234 Sehwag has won matches for Delhi without Mahela. Out of 14 matches, Sehwag won 10 whereas Mahela won one out of tow, so his performance is still far behind. With Sehwag as Captain DD is going to win this edition of IPL do not worry

DD is great!!!!! But I think it will difficult to win the title for DD because the finals are gonna take place at Chennai where the wicket is quite slow and there is little help for pacers. As the DD bowling line-up is puffed with bowlers bowling at147ks it will be tough for them to extract swing from the dead pitches of Chennai.Still I love DD and want it to win the IPL.

Well played Delhi!!! But i still feel the team still has fragile feeling about their batting. I believe they should bring in colin ingram for david warner. No offence... david is a great player, but he has a tendancy to go for too many shots early on and throw away his wicket. colin ingram is a good player and technically sound....he would be great a great opening partner for sehwag. also warner struggles against spinners, which would exactly be the case against kkr in the first plaoff. Ingram is a better player of spin as he uses his feet against spinners. also i believe they should give puneet bist a chance in place of naman ojha. Puneet plays for delhi in the ranji, and has a reputation of being a good dahser with the bat, All the best to delhi for the playoffs! Hope they win the IPL this time :)

There is a chance of rajasthan royals if RCB looses today.I want Dravid's in playoffs, rather than DHONI and KOHLI..!!!!! I don't want dhoni or kohli in playoff's!!!!!

which BCCI plays with non metro teams so that they are not able to pick best players.Look at the way IPL chairman tried to side with RCB on Luke's issue. In the end well done KXIP and come with bang next year.My be Preity should think of buying Yuvi from Pune and this team will be hard to beat.My support is always with you.

  • TSJ07 on May 20, 2012, 3:14 GMT

continued......then Dhoni has to be out of team.Like 1st T20 WC I would like to have young players like Rohit,Mandeep,Chand,Dinda,Das,Awana,Aaron,Yadav etc and not Dhoni,Raina,Zaheer,Nehra.

Punjab did very well to score 141 here especially after they were 20/4 in 6 overs but just coz one man they lost the match. Also Punjab bowlers bowled very short mainly PK and Awana .Had Warner taken early situation would have very different as was seen after his departure. But then as KXIP fan I dont have any complaints as they showed that even most of them are not from Punjab but they showed true Punjabi spirit with the fighting qualities.I wish they hadn't lost that match against MI where Chawala gave away 27 runs in one over. That match cost us the IPL playoff berth. @Praful Sohal:-Thanx for info.I was wondering why Preity has been holding back that excess money which she could have spent on auction.this is not fair to Punjab and RR and they must do something about it.IMO its coz politics .......

  • TSJ07 on May 20, 2012, 3:03 GMT

@Kartickrajj:-They sold Karthik coz he didn't play very well last year.BTW Saini was good this year and after just one failures against CSK he was replaced with Valthaty who was out of form.It was huge gamble Punjab mnmgt took in seaming conditions which backfired big time.Saini is more conventional batsman though we are not really sure about his technique/skills. @Sivan1980:-Coz they dont deserve to win IPL coz of Srinivasan and Dhoni playing politics which is not good for Indian Cricket.I hope you agree on this. They also rely on foreign players a lot and need flat, low, slow and dying tracks and dibly-dobly spinners(except to win matches. This year 160-165 is above par score coz of some help for bowlers and so this is why CSK have faltered.Look at the way Dhoni is batting these days for CSK and India. He thinks he can play anchor role and then hit every ball for six later on but the truth is that he is neither Dravid nor KP/Warner/Gayle.If India has to win this yr T20 WC .......

  • on May 20, 2012, 0:52 GMT

If CSK is really destined to have a hat-trick, so DC will win tomorrow... DC has been the most unlucky team of this season, having lost many matches by whisker.. so RCB have a BIG (Life and Death ) match to be won.. in the earlier match... it needed HEROICS from AB (23 runs of Dale Steyn) for RCB to beat DC... it is extremely difficult to have those heroics in every match.... so Match ON.... Keep Fingers Crossed.... Hope Lady Luck favors Chennai with much awaited victory for DC...

  • Vinnyvinner on May 19, 2012, 22:39 GMT

@Sivan1980 very well said buddy, what you said was 100% true. May be all these guys are jealous of CSK victories. In this season really we cannot say CSK is lucky because they had their share of failures and they fought back with 3 consecutive victories to gain that 17 points to have that slim hopes of qualifying for play off. So guys rather than showing ur hatred towards CSK show ur love towards ur team.

  • sawnoff on May 19, 2012, 21:44 GMT

Delhi have ended their league on a winning note. i have a strong feeling that they might crumble some where in the knockout stage. and as far a RCB is concerned Chris Gayle was there even last year and his guns did not have the firepower when it was required the most. Ab is put to rust. in this tournament either 3 batsmen or all eleven have batted fro RCB, unlike other teams where 5 to 6 batsmen have played. It would be only Mr Mallya's long cherished dream of winning the tournament (match against Delhi without Sehwag they managed 196 warner dismissed early, against MI they could not defend, against CSK they lost even after scoring 1st 200 of the season) which i do not see. KKR and Mumbai Indians are the only teams who have won matches closely. hence i fancy their chances, their local talent have made them believe (one team is from Mumbai and the owner of the other is from Mumbai).

  • vioo on May 19, 2012, 21:39 GMT

@sivan 1980 well said...CSK is not the only team which is riding on luck..anyway i dont want CSK to qualify for playoff at this time with RCB's failure.. comparatively they have done a gud job..

I hate CSK with all my heart.... I hope they don't sneak in to the semis this time aroud.... go RCB!

  • TheUltimateTruth on May 19, 2012, 20:52 GMT

@Pritivi Raj J Gilchrist has not been great with the bat in the last two IPLs. I do hope for your Kings XI's sake he doesn't come back next year as a player, and that the management have the smarts and the money to go get a couple of good players so they can be competitive next year. Gilchrist will be a good coach. Back to that CSK game, the low score posted by CSK was all because of them losing the toss and the tough seaming/swinging conditions in the 1st innings. Kings XI felt the wrath of those conditions today when they lost the toss against DD. Against CSK Gilly played well, but you have to realize that he had no pressure to score quickly, had time to settle down and then line up a non-entity like Yo Mahesh for 21 runs in one over. Toss giveth some times but taketh away other times.

  • TechMc on May 19, 2012, 19:54 GMT

@Sivan1980: Calm down mate. looks like u r frustrated at CSK's situation right now... It happens ... Its not necessary that they win all IPL Titles till eternity... You dont have to take things so deeply into ur heart :) ...

  • on May 19, 2012, 19:17 GMT

Truth tht may be the truth... but y play of everything is just in the toss... I give credit to Gilly for the KXIP win over CSK not the pitch. Well Ankush da if its fair for DADA to post nine looses in a row after some super man show... then every thing else is fair... I wish KKR take Dada again and Yuvi returns to pune in season XI

@Ankush Jangid: Delhi had their full team (Sehvag, KP, Morkel, Ross Taylor, Mahela, Pathan) when they played against Mumbai twice this season. Can you plaese explain why did they do this against Mumbai? As per your logic, they should had rested all Sehvag, KP, Morkel, Ross Taylor, Mahela, Pathan against Mumbai.

The match was lost when Punjab lost the toss just like CSK did the other day. That's why this is not a good pitch -- it gives too much of an advantage to the team bowling first. Punjab did well to get to 140 but it was not going to be enough. The pitch and the conditions were so much better in the 2nd innings. Even 160 would not have been enough.

  • on May 19, 2012, 14:52 GMT

There's a wrong thing done by these big teams with the other teams. They lose when the loss is favouring big teams like CSK or MI. Who would have thought that Delhi would leave Morkel out against RCB, and if he was being rested for playoffs, why did he play today. Also KKR vs CSK, last ball six by bravo(who would have thought that). In simple words, IPL isn't fair for teams like RR, Kings XI,etc.

They always think about CSK win and qualify. Peoples are praying CSK should loose to K11Punjab. They are saying CSK riding on the luck. Accepted. Same way it is appilcable for other teams as well. CSK lost the match against K11punjab thats why RR, K11punjab, MI and RCB still in the league. It means thery are very lucky. In this IPL5 only CSK lost many games at the last over or ball. So people has to accept CSK is not lucky. They are just playing good cricket with some luck. We can say CSK converting the lucky opportunity well in their way than other times.
