Vinay Kumar is despondent after leaking 20 runs in the Super Over against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sunrisers Hyderabad v Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL, Hyderabad, April 7, 2013

Sunrisers Hyderabad rode on the power of Dale Steyn's experience to pick up their second consecutive win, this one over Royal Challengers Bangalore, after the game had gone into Twenty20 cricket's sudden death - the Super Over. Steyn had to defend 20 runs, thanks to Cameron White's two blazing hits off Vinay Kumar, and came out on top as Royal Challengers fell five runs short.

The teams had fought tooth and nail throughout the forty overs in front of a noisy crowd in Hyderabad. Defending seven, Vinay bowled an impressive 20th over for the second game in a row - conceding only six - but could not repeat the performance in the tiebreaker. He was Virat Kohli's go-to man after he had defended 10 runs off the last over against Mumbai Indians.

The seesaw battle began with Sunrisers staying on top as they restricted the strong Royal Challengers' batting line-up to 130 for 8 in 20 overs. What would have happened to the Royal Challengers' innings without Kohli and Moises Henriques was hard to say. The pair contributed 90 to the total.

After Chris Gayle fell dramatically to part-timer Hanuma Vihari's first ball in IPL cricket, and Tillakaratne Dilshan was bowled by Ishant Sharma, Kohli had to resurrect the innings. Karun Nair helped him a little by adding 20 for the third wicket, before Kohli and Henriques put on 43 for the fourth. Kohli then fell to a return catch by Ashish Reddy in the 14th over; he had struck the only six of the innings in his 44-ball 46.

Henriques' 44 came off 40 balls with five boundaries, and his innings held it together for Royal Challengers towards the finish. He was the seventh batsman out, at the start of the final over bowled by Ishant, who finished with 3 for 27. It was a performance in contrast to the night Dale Steyn had, having finished with 1 for 37 in four overs.

The Sunrisers' chase was held together by newcomer Vihari's unbeaten 44 off 46 balls but he never took the game away from Royal Challengers. He would have expected someone like his captain Kumar Sangakkara to take the lead but the Sri Lankan batsman made just 16. The game boiled down to such a finish because of a 23-run stand for the seventh wicket between Vihari and Ashish Reddy.

When Reddy joined Vihari in the 17th over, Sunrisers needed 30 off 23 balls. Vinay, who had just heroically run out Amit Mishra, was smashed for 14 in the 18th over, with Reddy slamming a straight six and a slog-swept four. Murali Kartik had to keep Royal Challengers in the game and he gave away seven runs in the penultimate over before Vinay forced the tie.

White and Thisara Perera were Sunrisers' choice for the Super Over, and they outdid Royal Challengers' Gayle and Kohli.

This was a match with low quality cricket ...Tie was a fair result i reckon...both teams didnt deserve to win i feel..and RCB should get rid off Vinay Kumar bowling death overs...his last over against MI was fluke...except last ball, all others were length balls against MI..and today some how he managed to defend 7 since he had some tail enders and a newbie at the crease..

Posted by JontyG on (April 8, 2013, 19:41 GMT)

Great Match - both the teams did wonderfully well, the difference was d Vihari/Ashish Reddy partnership and then the batting from White in super over. All knew Dale had itin him to contain that score againts any batsman..

Aksath Reddy (Opening Batsman) Ashish Reddy (All rounder) Vihari (Middle order), Rayudu, T Suman, P Ojha - these are the local hyderabadi's and I want these playes to represent Sunrisers Hyderabad in the next IPL, get them at any cost SRH ! show the world, what Hyderabad is capable of.

With Dhawan coming back, the SRH would only get better...

Posted by Lord_Prady on (April 8, 2013, 17:10 GMT)

It was a good game and one that RCB should have won. I believe the team performed well and if not for two mistakes on the field, victory would have been certain.

First was field placements. Kohli did wonderfully to contain boundaries but when the required rate is 6.5, ones and two go a long way in acheiving the target, the 1s and 2s should have been contained as well.

Second mistake was not being proactive during the super over when V Kumar was bowling. Clearly the bowler's nerves were shot. Kholi should have been more active with planning every ball and keeping the bowler calm like he did in the 20th over. The super over needs to be treated with the same level of intensity as the last over of an innings not the first.

Really proud to be a Hyderabadi finally. I dont mine even if we loose consecutive matches from hereon. The best part of this team is our local unknown players playing so well. It's not just Vihari and 2 REDDY's, there is also D. Ravi Teja in this team. If all these 4 continue to impress in IPL, i don't mine about winning. Hopefully these lads will not sign for another franchise like a A. Rayudu / a T. Suman.

Dhawan / Ishanth / Parthiv's performances are always welcome for us, but their proper is not in Hyderabad / A.P. so we don't get the real joy (Surely they will play for another franchise next season) on those occasions.

Underdogs doing well is good to see but the question is "How long can they maintain this victory streak?" Sangakkara's batting is the only weak link to this team. Waiting to see Dhawan in action.

Oh yes JamesSmithee, I am sure Malinga is way better than Dale Steyn... world cup finals against West Indies... Malinga 4 overs for 54 runs.

Maliga is far better than Styne in shorter formats. He can defend 10 runs.

Posted by bipulkumar on (April 8, 2013, 8:57 GMT)

It doesn't make sense that 1 bowler is given the onus to decide entire match in case of super over. At least 2 bowlers should share the super over. Bowling end should change every ball so that a batsman hitting boundary doesn't keep getting strike. If you take this match, Hyderabad had Dale Steyn so they made merry while Bangalore didn't have clear best bowler so they had to single out Vinay. Also, if Gayle had stuck at one end and keep hitting sixes then it wouldn't have made sense either. Super over idea needs improvement to make it more effective.

Posted by timohyj on (April 8, 2013, 8:48 GMT)

RCB should have won if not for one of the most bizarre umpiring mistakes i have ever seen. Henriques got a full toss at his shoulders from perera which was somehow not called a no ball. An extra run and an extra ball and RCB would have won

Posted by Sanjiyan on (April 8, 2013, 8:34 GMT)

@GRVJPR Yes lets get rid of Steyn and get an Indian fast bowler whos better than him..oh wait, India doesnt even HAVE fast bowlers. You seem to think that Indian cricket is the pinnicle of cricket, ill let you in on a little secret, they're not. There are only 1 or 2 bowlers in the world who can defend 20runs vs a rampant Gayle. And as for Sanga, i doubt you would drop SRT or Dohni from the team because they're not making runs ;)

Posted by rashivkd on (April 8, 2013, 8:19 GMT)

Kohli superbly captained RCB, but i think a moment of lack of concentration let the team down towards super over. When the last over bowled, with 7 needed, he should make sure his fastest men in the field, ie Dilshan and himself was in long on and long off. But instead, he opted to field at mid wicket and choose inexperienced Agarwal at long off. And Agarwal allowed a second run in the penultimate ball of the game.

Hopes he will learn from these experience and will be better next time as he is really an aggressive and sensitive captain. Indian cricket really need a sensitive captain after MSD.

Posted by sanjaycrickfan on (April 8, 2013, 8:19 GMT)

Good to see the underdogs Sunrisers perform so well. When you look at this side, its clear they lack experience and stars. Vihari, Akshat Reddy, Ashish Reddy, Ankit Sharma are all rookies who barely feature in their state sides. Even Parthiv Patel is not such a good T20 player and neither is Sangakkara.

Its obvious that some sides like RCB, MI, CSK, Kolkata are buying players because of their money power and benching many of them and denying other teams like Punjab, Rajasthan, Hyderabad of these players. This is a very poor, unsportive strategy and will result in uneven games and will make the tournament poorer.

Its great that a team like Hyderabad is still doing well despite this and I will support these under dog teams to lift the trophy over teams like CSK, MI, RCB or KKR.

@ GRVJPR : Ok mate...Then just give the chance only to your Indian domestic players.But..Nobody outside India will watch the league.Sri Lankans watch the IPL due to Sanga,Murali,Malinga etc..The SA fans watch it coz of Steyn,Kallis..Bangladesh watch it coz of Shakib...understand that.

Posted by venkatesh018 on (April 8, 2013, 8:06 GMT)

Somehow RCB has to find a place for Ravi Rampaul. His death bowling and wicket taking ability is what the team lacked last night.

Posted by chaitu411 on (April 8, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

about sangakara......a player cannot deliver every time... more over sangakara's captaincy played a crucial role, he handled the unexperienced players and a weak side apart from steyn and white really well to deliver the positive results... hope he fires in coming matches for our hydrbad... cheers hyderabad sunrisers

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 8, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

@SurajDon Are you kidding? Young Side? he has steyn, Ishant, Mishra all test performers and even parthiv patel opened for India in tests. Sangakkara is overly overrated. Hos choice of steyn almost cost the match who went for 15, thank god there were 20 to defend. Whole league is full of overrated foreign player all belonging to teams lying at 3 to 6 th position in ICC ODI rankings.

Good to see Vinay Kumar improve as a bowler. Good time to bring him back to india T-20 side.....

Cameron White finally has a career highlight. At last he performed under pressure.

Posted by Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on (April 8, 2013, 7:25 GMT)

@GRVJPR Calm down dude. Dale Steyn is rated the best fast bowler in the world. This is not a fa-based vote, it is an official ICC world ranking based on solid and consistent international performances. Every person has an off day. Kohli had quite a lean patch before the Aussie series. But the great players always jump back. You'll see. and as for criticizing muralitharan....he was rcb's most economical bowler. Also, if the teams are to drop these "overrated" players as you suggest, who would they replace them with? None of the teams have enough domestic quality players to make a formidable team.

Posted by Surajdon9 on (April 8, 2013, 7:20 GMT)

Lots of Fan Criticize here regarding sanga's batting But he lead inexperience and Young side very well.Hope sanga will fire on upcoming matches.Sanga need to open with Reddy then followed by Patel, White, Vihari, Parera, and when dhawan is fit sanga and dhawan will be the ideal opening pair.Sanga lead Young team quite brilliantly so he deserve lots of credit....come on snag we need your bit batting too...

Posted by srinathphysio on (April 8, 2013, 6:57 GMT)

Vihari has playd wonderfully on slow pitch without hitting.Hyd'bad local boys are performing superbly.Let them cntinue till end.Best of luck sunrisers

Posted by   on (April 8, 2013, 6:45 GMT)

This is only Sanga's brilliant captaincy that did the trick.. brilliant choices for super over.. he could come for the place of Parera but he didnt.. i am surprised by Kohli's selection for batting and bowling.. Gayle and Dilsan for batting and Murali for bowling would be ideal.

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 8, 2013, 6:32 GMT)

IPL is unfortunately becoming a league of overrated foreign players. What is the need of giving huge dollars to sangakkara if Vihari has to score runs. Why dale steyn is going for 9 an over. Even in super over he conceeded 15 runs, thank god there were 20 to defend. India must trust their youngsters and not overarted foreigners.

Posted by SL_rockz on (April 8, 2013, 6:30 GMT)

Well done SRH...It was awesome to watch..A nail biting end to the match..Cos of this performances they made stadiums housefull for entire tournament...last season their perfromances were criticized heavily and they were even under the thumb of crtics.ppl donot came to see DC playing cos they knew they are going to see their side on loosing bfr the match.T was terrible past for DC.But now this performences will make their fans feel proud. And yet again they all will start to talk abt their team So proudly with their heads high up !!! Well done SRH...You have given the lost pride to Hyderabad ppl who were with you silently bearing all other crtics. When the match tied i knw SRH gng to win cos STeyn will ball the Super ovr.even gayle ,kohli,or dilshan or no player can win against this awesome fast bwler. He is a passionate cricketer as wasim akram .Attacks and counter attacks brilliantly...No doubt he is the world's no 1.And when he is in business no one is gng to stop him.Not even gayle.

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (April 8, 2013, 6:30 GMT)

Sangakkara is not a joy to watch in T20's. His style of play does not suit T20s. Same thing can be said about Sachin and Ponting. These players are embarrassing themselves and their fans.

For this match it is no secret that they choose steyn in that super over. Gayle probably wouldn't have scored those many runs even if had faced all the 6 balls.

@GRVJPR yeah lets throw out Gayle also as he did not score 21 runs in that one over. What a logic mate :) you made my day

Posted by Pathiyal on (April 8, 2013, 6:11 GMT)

Sensible performances from Vihari and Reddys whose efforts brought them to close the match, ending up in a super over. hats off to them and then to cameroon white who though not effective in the main innings showed fantastic character by stepping himself up in the super over and justifying that by scoring 20 runs with pereira. Dale Steyn who had a forgettable performance just as Cameroon White in the match proved us why he is still considered as the best bowler in the planet by keeping none other than Chris Gayle & Kohli struggle to make 20 runs. overall, a noteworthy performance from hyd'bad.

Posted by soumyas on (April 8, 2013, 6:04 GMT)

First of all Gayle's wicket didn't look like convincing, looked like umpires had planned to give Gayle OUT on first appeal itself... They didn't even analyse the fall of Gayle, they didn't even show proper replay of it.. Overall umpires were harsh on RCB bowlers in giving No-balls and wides, where as for Sunrises they looked soft cornered in giving No-Balls.... Also couples of miss fields by RCB fielders in last over costed them the match.

Instead of V Kumar, Murli wud have been handy. And yes, SRS got a great start, but i doubt their batting arsenal. Wud be great to see if Vihari along with other Indian batsmen steal the show....

@GRVJPR:- Hey you are saying to drop world's best and premier fast bowler from the SRH team and u catagarize him as a nuisance... OMG i understand you know lot about cricket mate :P :P.In one game he went 9 runs in over but in the last game he went under 3 runs in over.So you may have forgotten that. Don't judge a performance by one match. He has become world best fast bowler not for granted or as a gift..Because of his consistence performance..While he is still number one he may have an off day.Didn't Kohli(looks like ur fav) got out 0.Ok when he got out for duck or below 10 i will say what nonsense he should be dropped from the team. You seems to be in kinda jealous towards foreign players.Dont ask other ppl that they know abt cricket coz you have proven by telling to drop world best fast bowler in both test and ODI that you know nothng about cricket except jealous towards foreign players.Keep the spirit of the game respect ppl who we should respect irrespectve of whre d come from

it s goin to be a grat combination if daren sammy wi joins the sunrisers hit hard hitting talent and go wicket to wicket bowling would be very useful in place of perera who is not still the promsing player trys to hit every ball to the boundary as he did by throwin his wicket after hittin a boundary and seeing his team through

its great work done vihari done a fabouls job white washed away banglore if white fires no body can stop

Posted by sweetspot on (April 8, 2013, 4:34 GMT)

Oh, my God! There are people finding ways to swing the Super Over in favour of their side! It's just a tie breaker, and it is there only because there has been a tie in the first place! You cannot get ahead of yourself while planning for the super over. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. I think both captains made smart moves, and I think amongst the three on each side that were batting, there was more or less the same kind of prowess. The difference was between Vinay Kumar and Steyn. Not fair to really make comparisons here. But yes, I do feel Kohli was more making a statement by walking out rather than simply, logically, sending in Dilshan. But I'm sure he would have sent out AB if he was available.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2013, 4:25 GMT)

From the last two performances of SRH, It seems that they are well short of a decent hitter in the slog overs. Barring Perera, there is no one in the batting line up who can hit a ball straight into the stands. If Darren sammy joins the team, it makes SRH a decent team before they play against mighty teams like MI, KKR, CSK.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2013, 4:25 GMT)

While one cannot under estimate the ability of Steyn, instead of using Vinay Kumar against an Australian batsman , a spinner like Murli may have done better to restrict the runs. KOhli's experience was not good enough.

Posted by Akshita29 on (April 8, 2013, 4:20 GMT)

@GRVJPR calm down Man . If they throw out everyone who would play ?and its just a t20 game . Yes you are right about that Kohli should not be blamed as Captain . But Dale steyn is overated is bit too harsh . Nobody else could have stopped Gayle and Kohli in a super over even though they needed 20 with these small boundaries . (May be Maling ) . And Dale steyn is the World's best bowler right now . He is not overated . Murali and Dilshan could be dropped like u suggested and ABD would come soon . So RCB has a good chance to make it to semis and beyond this time with a weakened Delhi side .

Posted by netlook on (April 8, 2013, 4:11 GMT)

RCB's choice for bowlers for super overs are:

Vettori/Muralitharan - who are the one least likely to be pressured by the opposition and occasion. Go to them if in form. Karthik has developed into a good choker of the batsmen - automatic second choice. Vinay is a good bowler - use him if Karthik is out of form.

Vinay maintained cool against tailenders and lesser batsmen who are just licensed kamikazi's. He will struggle against any career-clobbers with a seek and destroy mission - as most medium pacer wood.

SRH's choice was 50-50 between Dayle Stern and Mishra. I will bet Stern wont go for 18 ever again...

henriques played well, but i dont see him in the team when ab comes back. the super over should have been bowled by muttaiah or unadkat . good field placements, tactics and bowling changes by kohli except for the super over. RCB also need good indian batsmen after kohli, pujara should be played as soon as he is fit. also RP singh and rampaul need to be given chances.

Posted by Venkat Sraman It was a superb super Sunday IPL VI match on 7th April which ended in a thriller super over which was ultimately won by SRH against RCB.This is similar to the first superb super Sunday IPL III match played at Chepauk on 18th April which was won by Yuvi's KXIP against CSK in style. However, brilliant comeback by CSK ,in the deciding the semi-finalist place match against KXIP at Dharmashala, enabled them to clinch the maiden IPL triumph in that edition against MI at Mumbai. These may be coincidences but true for IPL!

Those who are blaming Virat kohli for loss doesn't know anything about cricket. No captain in this league would have defended 120. It's muralitharan that is letting the team down along with some more fpreign players. Throw out these overrated foreigners from the team. Even Dasle steyn from sunrisers went for 9 an over and superover was also not good. He conceeded 15 runs and lucky that oppossition needed more. Throw out these overrated aussies, srilankans and south africans out

Posted by kevepere on (April 8, 2013, 2:12 GMT)

That henriques worth alot for RCB. Hopefully Sunrises gets more players like that to the team. It's worth alot. The Sunrises got the team spirit thats what keeps them alive. Feel good when the underdogs win over t20 star unit like rcb. They would find tough to win against CSK , KKR and MI tho.

Posted by kevepere on (April 8, 2013, 2:06 GMT)

Its not nice to say that sunrises does not have t20 star players! But that team spirit! sanga's captaincy + team winning spirit + youngsters contribution + white's & thisara affect + superb bowling unit . I think they should somehow keep a team lower than 135 in order to win. The batting relies on white+sanga. They need dhawan badly

Posted by rocket_rocket on (April 7, 2013, 23:50 GMT)

the biggest lesson that this match and the previous one i.e the kxip teach us is that never underestimate indian uncapped players. vihari showed his character at the right time..he might not have pulled this one off but gave sunrisers another chance in the form of super over ....hats off to SRH

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (April 7, 2013, 22:50 GMT)

A fantastic win by the Sunrisers !!!! I am extremely happy for them. RCB can give all the excuses they want, they did not score enough runs and should have lost the game in regulation time. Also, it's time to remove Murali from the team and bring in Daniel Vettori who can also bat a bit in case they struggle. RCB got their batting line up messed up completely this game. Henriques should have come before Mayank Agarwal who is nothing but an average Indian player. I have always felt RCB's major weakness are their AVERAGE Indian players and this loss proved just that.

Great win Risers. Dhawan and Sammy need to return soon as that will balance the team in the future for all the non-chennai venues. The best possible eleven would then be

Akshath, Dhawan (Patel till he is back), Sanga (JP for Chennai game),Vihari, Sammy,Perera,Akash Reddy,Ravi Teja,Mishra,Steyn,Ishant

Since Ravi Teja is a batsman, he can float before or after the international AR's

till then, keep hanging on and fighting till the end dear Risers

We must stop calling bowlers like Vinay Kumar specialist bowlers at the death. When will we get bowlers like Steyn and Morkel in the Indian team. I just wish our fast bowling culture undergoes a drastic change over the next few years.

Posted by Rally_Windies on (April 7, 2013, 21:06 GMT)

well, well, well,

Is Kholi going to blame his bowlers yet again ?

It must be the fault of the 4 bowlers who fielded ! Their fielding was poor, that is why the super over cost 19 runs ....

That must be the answer ...

Poor leadership from Kholi, yet another year..

RCB needs a captain and to make Kholi just a batsman ......

I think Banglore miss the trick they shld use Murli istead of vinay in super over! Bt vinay conceded önly 6 in 20th ovr so they went wìth vinay! Some time we take wrong decision in a rush of blood! N that was wrong decision...

Posted by Nampally on (April 7, 2013, 20:37 GMT)

Great win for the Sun risers against a star studded RCB. One person who deserves all the praise for their record of 2-0, is Skipper Sanga, He made full use of every player by making them rise to the occasion. 3 Examples: What a brilliant move risking Vihari to bowl to Gayle in the second over of the match! That was the real turning point of this match in a battle of David vs. Goliath. 19 year old Vihari in all his first class matches has just 4 wkts. Next he brought on Ashish Reddy to bowl to Kohli when he was well set. This move worked again. Vihari & Ashish each bowled just one over for 5 & 7 runs respectively. In the super over again, Sanga got the right openers to do their job, with 20 runs & Steyn did the rest. T 20 is a team sport where everyone contributes & the it is the Captain who gets the best out of them. Sunrisers is weak in batting without Dhawan. But they have become "Giant killers" by fully exploiting limited available talent- Bravo. A huge lesson for the Big Spenders!

Wow !!! Sanga seems to be captaining the heck outta Sunrisers in this IPL. :P" Gayle-Kohli wickets" stunt he pulled off... He brought those unknown players outta blue n got the best outta 'em. All Sunrisers need is an explosive opening pair. They've got sanga in the middle to built the innings n Perera to fire at the end. I think once De Kock n Dhawan join the squad, They will be ready to take on any team. I want one of following teams to win it all, Sunrisers, Pune, DD or RR, coz 3 of 'em led by Sri lankans n our young bullet Kusal plays for 4th team. :P

When is Dhawan coming for sunrises? When he comes the team should be 1 P.Patel 2 . Dhawan 3. White 4 Vihari 5. Sanga 6. Perera 7 Mishra 8. A Reddy 9 Steyn 10 Sharma 11. Tiyagi / any top bowler

Sunrisers Hyderabad has already made a strong statement. We are here to fight and win. And we'll win.

Look there may be a lot of RCB fans saying why not Moises Henriques or Dilshan with Gayle for super over, but the reality is RCB is missing someone like AB De Villers. This is a big morale victory for Sunrisers because of its youngsters who bought a match to tie(super over was professionals for both sides).I've got next match tickets at Hyderabad just to watch Dale Steyn-the best pace bowler in the world.

I wonder why henriques wasn't given the last over to bowl though he had 1 over left & his figures were 3 overs - 2/14...for me, he should be the man of the match for his all round efforts with both bat & ball.

Steyn you beauty ! RCB missed De Villiers badly. Remember last year.......

Anyone else think it's time for Dilshan to go and just open with Kohli alongside Gayle? give Barnwell a run out as 4th overseas star I'm sure he'll be hungry to perform with both bat and ball like the other West Indian all rounders have done in the IPL since day1 (Smith,Bravo,Pollard,Cooper)
