Misbah, Cheema take Pakistan to five-wicket win

  shares 137

Pakistan 142 for 5 (Misbah 48*, Shafiq 33) beat Sri Lanka 141 (Chandimal 56, Cheema 4-30) by five wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

There was no respite for Sri Lanka. In one of the more closely-fought encounters on this tour, it was Pakistan who prevailed by five wickets after their opponents promised to deliver better, only to falter and give it away. First, with their batting, when they began aggressively and scored at around nine an over in the first ten overs before slowing down considerably and eventually capitulating in the second half. And then it happened with the ball, their spinners putting them in control through tight spells and wickets, not knowing Dilhara Fernando and some fielders would fail to hold their nerve at the death.

Misbah-ul-Haq stood tall for Pakistan, doing what Dinesh Chandimal, who made an enterprising half-century, failed to achieve after guiding the innings - seeing his team through to the end and finishing on a high. Pakistan's seamers did what their counterparts failed to do - Aizaz Cheema and Umar Gul cleaned up the innings, taking five wickets in the last two overs, to restrict the visitors to a chaseable score; on the other hand, Fernando doled out length deliveries that brought down the required-rate considerably.

Ajantha Mendis, returning from injury, and captain Tillakaratne Dilshan restrained Pakistan in their pursuit of 142 after Imran Farhat began brightly. He inaugurated the innings with three crisp boundaries off the first over of the innings but brought on to bowl in the sixth over, inside the Powerplay, Mendis struck, removing Farhat, who holed out. Umar Akmal's first-ball duck was crucial in reducing the tempo of the innings further when he adventurously made room to Dilshan and was bowled playing inside the line.

The next four overs yielded just 19, but at one end was Misbah, building up for a flourish at a later stage. He warmed up by slogging a six off Dilruwan Perera over midwicket and triggered the turn in the tide when 43 were needed off four overs, Afridi just having joined him at the other end.

Fernando dropped slightly short to be pulled to the square boundary, and then overcompensated by bowling too full; Misbah unleashed a cracking drive through cover and whipped a full toss behind square to make it 14 in the over. Mendis still had an over left, but Dilshan gave Fernando another go, much to, presumably, his regret. Two length balls followed in the penultimate over - Cheema picked up three wickets at the same stage in the Sri Lankan innings while aiming at the blockhole - and Afridi dispatched them over long-on and deep midwicket. Though he fell off the final delivery, he'd brought down the equation to nine off the last over.

The win was hastened by a botched-up fielding attempt. The first ball of the final over, Misbah drove Malinga to long-off. What should have been a single became two as the fielder took time to get to the ball, and if that wasn't enough, his wayward throw, missed first by Kumar Sangakkara and then by the short fine leg backing up awkwardly, resulted in six runs in total. With two needed off four, Shoaib Malik edged one wide of third man to seal victory with Sri Lanka still appealing desperately, thinking it was a deflection off the pad.

Though Cheema was the star towards the end of Sri Lanka's innings, it was Saeed Ajmal who started the slide. Ajmal's variations have played a major role in his rise to the No.1 spot in the ODI rankings and with expert changes in flight, pace and his mastery over the doosra, he choked Sri Lanka. In a potentially risky move, he was brought on inside the Powerplay, like Mendis, and was launched over mid-off not long after. The next ball, though, was generously flighted and Dilshan was tempted into the slog-sweep which he top-edged to offer a comfortable catch. Ajmal was particularly effective round the wicket, the batsmen often caught confused about the direction of his turn.

Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez slowed down the innings further, making boundaries a rare commodity. Sangakkara, Sri Lanka's best batsman, chipped a catch back to Hafeez while Angelo Mathews and Chamara Silva, from whom the visitors would have expected a surge at the death, were run out. Racing to 91 for 3 at the end of 10 overs, Sri Lanka only managed 50 in the next ten. Cheema added the finishing touches by making up for his troubles early on. In the penultimate over, he trapped Chandimal in front, had Thisara Perera caught behind and bowled Malinga. Sri Lanka fell way short of the target they were on track for. They met with the same fate with the ball.

There are many positives that came out of this series for Pakistan. (1) Shoaib Malik showed up for the games, but his contribution was nil (2) Sohail Tanvir has finished third appearance for the national team in the last 12 months and the results were negative. (3) The opener conundrum continues and the pair lacks consistency. AHMED SHEHZAD, HAMMAD AZAM, and SADAF HUSSAIN are next inline for national team appearances.

I don't know how many runs Matthews had already made before that bail was dislodged which umar akmal did not spot. However, if it had been given out sri lanka would have had less runs on the board than they got at the end (maybe 130?). in T20 things can go anywhere and the format is very unpredictable. At the end, the best team througout this tour won. :)

Srilankan have lot of good blowers. But why they always play Dilhara. He cant even blow a legal deliver most of the time, He is fast but no use. I know the result when Mr. Captain gave the ball to Dilhara even that time SL were in winning position. Atleast dilshan could ask sanga to bowl.

  • POSTED BY Malaka1979 on | November 26, 2011, 17:19 GMT

Not sure why we still persist with Dilhara. He should RETIRE. Losing is one thing but the manner in we loose is difficult to understand. Batting is terrible, really doubt Marvan can add value to the team. We need someone like Aravinda to consult the batters. Anyways things are going to continue unless we change the current things drastically. BRING BACK MAHELA AS THE CAPTAIN. Oh and Sanath pls keep your expertise to yourself.

@Mino > Didn't you know that Chamara Silva one day woke up to hit the ball out of the square and scored a brilliant plus 63 off 71 balls against Australia when all batters were falling. That's the day he did enough and more to become an un-droppable prospect for at least another 5 years according to our selectors. So lets live with these nice and progressive cricketers who even does not want or know to harm a cricket ball.

Some people are screaming of changes be brought upon the Sri Lankan side. But these dudes does not seems to understand how SL was winning cricket matches for the past 10-12 years. You needn't be a rocket scientist to understand who was behind these successes. With his retirement SL hasn't really found another replica n neither one will emerge in the future. Murali was one in a generation champion. I always felt it wasn't all political pressure that got Mr. Sangakkara to relinquish captaincy. He's such a brilliant visionary of the game he surely would have known what was in stock for Lankan cricket without Murali. Sanga is human after all n he wouldn't have wanted to face the media after every series loss that was bound to happen n would happen without Murali. I challenge Sanga or Mahela to take on the captaincy and try change SL's cricketing fortunes.Dilshan gave the neck ultimately. SL can always find batsmen of highest class but inducting a Bradman alone will not win anything for SL.

We as Lankan fans expected these results in UAE. The selectors are to be blamed. They have no excuse for the plight they put sri lankan cricket. They dropped Thilan saying, we are looking ahead. Then dropped Lahiru from the 3rd Test. The Captain keep on giving interviews saying we discussed this ,that...but he himself plays the same rash shots & get out. Go through the dismissals of Dilshan. Its a fact he doesnt posses a game to captain a side. Just look at Misbha!!Congrats to Pakistan. He must be 37 plus, looks good for another 2 to 3 years. All are responsible for the plight we are in, we face a whitewash at the hands of S.Africans. Since the World Cup its all but down hill. Let Mahela captain ODI's & 20/20.Kumar Tests.

First of all thank to Allah Almighty Who blessed the Pakistan team courage and strength to seal the all 3 formats of games. Though there is nothing special to say, because throughout the tour each and every Pakistani player done well. they played like a one unit in Tests, ODIs and T20. But i want to say one thing that, why Shahid Khan Afridi is being pushed way back in batting line up. We all know that is a genuine match winning player with his ball and bat. But why captain and think tank of Pakistan is forcing him to face just 4 to 5 overs at the depth of the game and then we except that he would do some magic in few overs. No doubt that he is the most devastating player of ODIs and T20s but please give him some confidence to send him at number 5. If he faces some dot balls then he would find the right ball and right confidence to hit the ball through long way. dont put extra pressure on him. As he proved in fourth ODI. He stayed there and accumulated runs.

as a south african i find it telling that people like saleem_chaudhry give the temporary coach mohsin khan lavish credit and than say "and also thanks to misbah" as an afterthought.....why is it pakistani supporters are so blind not to see they have a gem and real leader in misbah al huq? Misbah is solely responsible for the unity and purpose we have seen in pakistan cricket for the first time since imran khans days. Shoab malik needs to be dropped once and for all and also imran farhat.

there is nothing wrong with the captaincy and choose dilahara to bowl.Because afridi was in the middle ,he is a good player for spin he would have smashed 6 out of six if mendis or dilshan bowled the dilahara's over.the main problem with the batting and lost 6 wickets for three runs.Pakistan it self draged the match after fall of 4 wicket and they batted sensibly.wrong with sl batting and they cant even last for 5 overs after fall of 4 wickets in every format.even though great come back by chamera silva los.

It's the Coaches & Selectors who ruined it all.

Siddhartha Talya forget to mention the performance of Zameer Haider.I think his performance as empire was mediocre. in the very beginning of sri lanka's innings he was standing at very wrong position when Farhat throw a ball from deep to non striker end. Then he gave wide ball of Umer gul's well directed bouncer and the same ball of Milanga to Asad was not given wide. The worst decision came from him when he gave Hafeez LBW to a ball that was going way above the Stumps. I am surprised that why Aleem Dar and Asad Rauf were not there through out the series.

Dilshan has no idea about captaincy or strategies involved in cricket. He still thinks we los cos of no enough runs on board. Only the last over should have been bowled by eithe dilshan or even dilhara hen nos needed shoul have been ove 15. Great play by chandimal. Drop sanga h onl plays for glory not for team.

So you can clearly see the difference in the level of entertainment value when pakistan plays and when others play.I have always been an avid fan of theirs because of their cavalier approach to the game and you can expect anything from them. Most of the time its miracles which they perform in the face of dire situations. Two 6's blasted by an otherwise sedate Afridi in the penultimate over and the calculated approach by Misbah sealed the fate for the SLankans.Others go for personal records, pakistan goes for entertaining cricket...does not matter if they lose. And I do get upset when they do

As a Sri Lankan its very much petty with our current performances . Yesterdays T20 Dilhara should not have played coz, Dilhara is not a T20 player AT ALL, he doesn't know TACK-TCKS of T20. …. But ideal for a TEST MATCH ….. Cannot understand why these selectors and the Captain don't understand this . His over was the turning -point of the match which Afridi smashed him for two sixes . He has done this kind of mistakes many times in past ….. Dilhara should have rewarded with " MAN OF THE MATCH " ( EATER … ) Pakistan not having those 12 runs within two balls we should have definitely won this game at least to honor the reputation. Selectors and the Captain have to be more vigilant and understand individual talents / performances And act accordingly, which is not happening for some reason . All concern authorities try to rectify all lapses …. If not SA tour / hopes will be worst than this …. All the best SL ……

True, he did not performed with the bat in the two ODI's when he was given a chance after he sat on the bench for three tests and three ODI's. It happens, but still he bowled economically and gave away 28 runs in 8 overs at 3.5 runs per over in the two ODI's. He is still the most active in the field. Lets support him dear guys, to perform again in all three categories, batting, bowling and fielding.

Whats next for SLC? i mean apart from the delayed elections. All the fans are so sad but we will have to really see what went went wrong with this side where we reached two world cup finals. I am sure when Mahela retired from the captaincy and handed the job over to Sanga, he and must have expected him to carry on for years untill they groome a new captain. But with Sanga's retirement from captaincy haphazardly has created a huge vaccume in the team where a player like Dilshan is unable coup up with the pressure as well as to carry him self forward with the same respect the players had for his previous captains. Sanga must have had his personal reason for giving up the job but as per my understanding, he should have waited at least untill the 20/20 world cup and groomed someone like Angelo to take over the captaincy.I am sure if the authorities requested, he would have stayed for a little bit longer and saved SLC from this humiliation. If he still cannot accept, the best person is Mahela

Personally I think Dimuth should have been given a chance, instead of Tharanga.Instead of having Dilruwan, Jeewan Mendis should have been in the team as he bowled really well.Apart from Chandimal (and Dilshan to a certain extent) NONE of the batsman did anything AT ALL!!! Hopefully our players will learn from their minstakes and do well in South Africa.

Kudos to pak team!! Misbah showed character and once again held the batting unit but I was wondering if he could finish off with 9 reqd of last over from Malinga. Had not SL given those 4 overthrows then it must have been a tough finish and if Pak had lost, instead of praying Misbah people would ve backfired. I got reminded of Ind vs Pak semifinal clash. Had Ind made similar mistakes then Pak would've won and Misbah would've been a hero ;) I still couldnt understand why Sohail tanveer is playing when there are players like Sadaf Hussain, Wahab Riaz etc..

  • POSTED BY on | November 26, 2011, 3:21 GMT

Its sad to see the present state of Sri Lankan cricket which seems to be in mess with team unity in disarray. To make it worse the selectors do not identify players for their ability.Players such as Tharanga,Chamara Silva,Dilhara are not T 20 material whcih was proved & should have included exiting players such as Kusal Janith,Sachith Pathirana,Dilshan Munaweera & re-cosider palyers such as Randiv,Weeratna,Maharoof ,Chinthaka Jayasinghe as they say" horses for courses". Unless otherwise SL cricket rectify this problems soon we will have nightmare T20 world cup in 2012.

  • POSTED BY on | November 26, 2011, 3:18 GMT

Pakistan were on top through out the series, even when they struggled, they had done well to put Sri Lanka under pressure. Sri Lanka team need to get a good batting coach. Marvan was a good test batsman for sri lanka but not a good coach...

If Dilshan doesn't do well in SA series, it's time to givr it to a someone else...

  • POSTED BY napster82 on | November 26, 2011, 1:38 GMT

this whole tour is a good example of what happens to players outside India when they choose to play IPL. They will their zealous to play for their own country because that monetary motivation is not there. Of course this will happen inadvertently on the part of the players as it is related to the psychological profile.

  • POSTED BY on | November 26, 2011, 1:29 GMT

Well done Pakistan, Hmmmm Sri lanka, Dilshan - you need to leave captaincy first go back to basics as a normal player, Sanga - you need to come back as a captain to the team that is the only way & the best way you could do for your country,SL selectors - pathetic thinking patterns & selections of yours, just resign!

  • POSTED BY Zahidsaltin on | November 26, 2011, 0:02 GMT

NO ITS NOT ALL RIGHT. happy for the win but (1) selectors need to answer why they persist with Sohail Tanveer has no control, no speed or inswing. You can not go on based of one good IPL season. You can't go on with 125 kph bowler who bowls bundle of wides and only one way swing, and no batting to boast of. Totally misfit. HAMAD AZZAM was a much mcuh better replacement for RAZAQ. (2) Pakistani bowlers must be told to control bowling wide. In every T20 we bowl 2 overs extra due to this problem (3) Where is old Umar Gul with yorkers. He bowls at least 2 to 3 deliveris each over where he is short, gives width etc. His last overs have decorated his states today. (4) Shoaib Malik must get his act right or go home. One missed run out, one missed/dropped catch and lucky to have 2 runs to his name (5) Pakistani bowlers/fielder are generally very poor in collecting throws at bowling end. An everlasting problem........ SOME THOUGHTS TO THE COACH AND SELECTOR

ohh so now every one likes misbah ..what about hes old and oh blah this and that huh...

  • POSTED BY on | November 25, 2011, 23:14 GMT

once again misbah proved to all of his critics that they are wrong .. he is a great leader, who know what to do at what time .. good overall performance from all players specially afridi and ajmal .. The only worry is most of the current players are over aged .... Malik and razzak have no place in the team .. selectors should give more chances to youngsters .. Best of luck pakistan against England !!

  • POSTED BY Green_Shirts on | November 25, 2011, 22:25 GMT

Yet again an exciting thriller..........Misbah you are the real hero behind all this.....nice captaincy mate.......some one was complaining about Razzak not playing today......bdddyy HE IS DAMN INJURED!!!

  • POSTED BY on | November 25, 2011, 22:01 GMT

Dilhara's 19th over was a shocker but i still think Malinga would have pulled it off for us if it wasnt for the overthrows. All in all great contest and if Pakistan can build on this we'l see them racing up those charts in the near future.

  • POSTED BY on | November 25, 2011, 22:01 GMT

Great job TEAM PAKISTAN. Misbah and Afridi are really taking this team ahead. This team is really showing how small team performances can win a match with great team work and honesty. Pakistan will face hard times against other teams as Sri Lankans choked at the very end of their innings, nearly in all matches. Great team efforts and keep it up.

  • POSTED BY on | November 25, 2011, 21:02 GMT

King Misbah is the man. What a player, what a captain. He s unbelievable. With the nerves of steel, he just takes tha game away from the opposition with such calmness. What a dream series as a captain for him, truly deserving. His field placings, bowling changes, calculations have been exceptional throughout the tour. Misbah is on a mission, a mission to see Pakistan climb up the rankings.

  • POSTED BY Happy_AusBang on | November 25, 2011, 20:52 GMT

@AbdulHanan, obviously you are not aware Razzaq is injured and has been sent back home. And even if he was available you have to let the selectors and captain make their call who to play. Naturally, they won't be right every time, but if they get it right most of the time that is good enough. I think it is a good position to be in when they team has so many choices in bowling and batting.

  • POSTED BY on | November 25, 2011, 20:08 GMT

finally, exciting times for us Pakistan fans. We look like a unit now MashAllah and hope we keep prospering. Only one mistake though. Pak should have selected Sadaf instead of Khalil Hussain for Ban tour.. he is 21 and a tour like that would have done a whole world of good to him

  • POSTED BY on | November 25, 2011, 19:59 GMT

well done pakistan. Misbah was cool and Afridi proivded te impetus just when it was required at the right time. So Pak cricket is on the right track now. best of luck for the future series. for SL, the only problem looks to be the inconsistent batting. their bowling is inexperienced though it is doing well. Pak spin attack is the best in the world at the moment.

We can see extra efforts from every player out there. It was Afridi's sixes that turned the game. Misbah did play very well but we got a lucky break on the first ball of the last over, or else, Misbah was on a very tight spot against Malinga. This game could have gone either way had it not been to that four over throws.

  • POSTED BY z-ahmed on | November 25, 2011, 19:44 GMT

However, I was disappointed to see so many old players in the team because they won't be around for many years and that will mean Pak will have to start fresh again.

Oh well, at least it allows me to title Pak's upcoming series: Pak's pensioners vs The future of Bangladesh.
