Shoaib Malik, the Pakistan allrounder, will lead an overseas T20 franchise for the second time when he captains Guyana Amazon Warriors for the 2018 Caribbean Premier League starting August 8. He has previously captained the Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League.
The leadership group at the franchise will comprise Malik and head coach Johan Botha, the former South Africa offspinner, who hoped the allrounder's calmness will help herald a new dawn for the franchise. Guyana won five out of their 10 matches last season. The pair also worked together during the PSL season earlier this year, at Multan Sultans, who failed to make the playoffs after winning just four of their nine games.
"It's great to have the experience of Shoaib leading us this year. He is a very calm leader, which will be great in pressure situations on the field," Botha said. "I worked with him earlier this year in the Pakistan Super League, so we come into the CPL and the Guyana Amazon Warriors team with a good working relationship and understanding of each other."
Malik, with two decades of international experience that includes 102 T20I and 264 ODI caps, previously represented Barbados Tridents in the tournament. He has led Pakistan in 36 T20Is, winning 24 of them.
He was also at the helm during Sialkot Stallions' record winning streak in T20s - 25 matches between 2006 and 2010.
