How they were out

A fighting innings from Khaled Mashud, Bangladesh's doughty wicketkeeper and former captain, staved off the inevitable for a while, but England still wrapped up a comprehensive victory - their ninth in succession at home - before lunch on the third day at Lord's. It was Bangladesh's 32nd defeat in 37 Tests, and the 21st by an innings margin.

Mashud got in behind the ball in a way that shamed some of the earlier batsmen, and ground his way to 44. His elegant push-driven four through the covers off Simon Jones, which raised the 150, was the pick of his five boundaries. He put on 58 - Bangladesh's highest and best partnership of the match - for the ninth wicket with Anwar Hossain, who also did the basics right in surviving more than an hour for his 13. But it was never going to be enough: with England's fast men roaring in and pushing all the batsmen onto the back foot, it was always only a matter of time.

The slide started in the first over of the day, when Matthew Hoggard cut his sixth ball back into Aftab Ahmed's pads. He was trapped in front after a breezy 32 - his 52 runs in the match included 11 fours.

In Steve Harmison's next over Mohammad Rafique - a Test centurion against West Indies - edged his first ball low towards first slip, but Geraint Jones dived across and caught it. Next ball Mashrafe Mortaza rather unluckily kicked a yorker into his stumps, dislodging the leg bail.

Anwar Hossain got his pads in the way of the hat-trick ball and survived - just, as Hawk-Eye suggested it would have clipped the top of the bails - and later in the over squeezed out a square-drive to bring up the 100.

After three wickets from the first nine balls of the day, an even quicker finish than expected was on the cards. But Mashud showed his team-mates the virtues of playing straight, punching Hoggard down the ground for two solid fours, and then embarked on his gritty partnership with Anwar.

They stuck it out for 68 minutes, but just as thoughts were turning to lunch Simon Jones pitched one up to Anwar, who edged his drive to first slip, where Marcus Trescothick took a good sharp catch. Mashud finally followed, gloving Andrew Flintoff to short leg the ball after surviving a confident appeal for caught-behind. But the plucky Mashud at least put the smiles back on the faces of Bangladesh's cricketers - and on those of England's administrators, who at least avoided the financial embarrassment of a full refund for all ticket-holders, as more than 10 overs' play was possible. Instead they can all claim half their money back.

The second Test starts at the Riverside in Chester-le-Street next Friday (June 3).
