Scorecard
Former England fast bowler Simon Jones was taken off after bowling two accidental beamers as Surrey made it five wins in five games in Group B of the Clydesdale Bank 40 by beating Hampshire by 36 runs at Whitgift School in Croydon.
Jones' indiscretion came as the Hampshire attack endured a torrid time, Tom Maynard leading the way with 79 off 57 balls as Surrey piled up 311 for 7. Hampshire, who have now lost four of their five games, made a fight of it with Benny Howell, a 22-year-old opening batsman playing in his sixth one-day game, hitting a magnificent 122 off 113 balls but a target of 312 was always going to be too big for them.
Jones had already let slip one beamer - a full toss above waist-height - at Zander de Bruyn with the first ball of his sixth over when he did it again to Matt Spriegel with the third ball of his seventh over.
The illegal deliveries were deemed accidental and Jones apologised immediately but, under the laws, umpire Graham Lloyd had no alternative but to remove him from the attack and report him for a level one offence.
Jones had conceded 61 in 7.2 overs and Dmitri Mascarenhas and Danny Briggs were even more expensive as Surrey registered the highest one-day score at the school ground with its short boundaries and fast outfield, after Hampshire had put them in.
Captain Rory Hamilton-Brown hit nine fours in his 56 of 45 balls before Briggs had him well caught by James Vince at long off. De Bruyn and Maynard then put on 108 in 16 overs for the fourth wicket. De Bruyn had made 48 when he was run out by Chris Wood's throw from the cover boundary and Maynard accelerated to 79 off 57 balls, including three sixes and six fours, before he was lbw to Dominic Cork.
Hampshire made a brisk enough start but they lost their momentum when Johannes Myburgh was superbly caught by Jason Roy, two-handed, diving to his right in the covers, off Tim Linley and James Vince top-edged Chris Schofield's first ball to square leg.
Neil McKenzie then cut Linley to point and after that only Howell threatened Surrey by hitting five sixes and nine fours before he was run out in a mix-up with Michael Bates. Briggs was last man out as they they were dismissed for 275 in the 39th over.
