Centuries from Jonathan Trott and Samit Patel led England Lions to an imposing 493 for 5 on the second day of the unofficial Test against New Zealand A in Queenstown. Trott remained unbeaten on 138, while Patel's 101 came off only 139 balls.
England began the day on 123 for 0 after a rain-shortened first day. However their openers Robert Key and Stepehen Moore fell in quick succession and England slipped from 130 for 0 to 140 for 2.
Trott and Patel began the recovery effort. Trott was steady, Patel more aggressive and the two shared a 164-run stand for the third wicket. Patel was then caught behind off Brent Arnel and England lost another wicket shortly after, when Eoin Morgan was bowled for 18. However, Luke Wright joined Trott and hammered 55 off 50 balls in a partnership of 81 for the fifth wicket.
Arnel and Mitchell McClenaghan picked up two wickets apiece for New Zealand.
England Lions rounded off a successful day by striking early in New Zealand's innings. Mark Davis had Tim McIntosh caught by Patel to reduce the hosts to 22 for 1 at stumps.
