Scorecard summary
England Women 235/9(50 overs)
53 (74)
South Africa Women 236/7(49.2 overs)

9.25pm What a day it's been in the World Cup. First Bangladesh earned their maiden World Cup win by bringing down Pakistan in the last over and now South Africa, beating the team that had sent them home in 2017, beating the defending champions, and inflicting their third loss in a row. South Africa are also making a habit out of winning right in the end, irrespective of their opposition. They may want to get some convincing wins under their belt.

Where do England stand now? Second from bottom in the table, but also in a lot of trouble. They are dropping chances in every game, of big players, at crucial stages, and that is hitting them more than anything else. Their batting has also not clicked since the Ashes, except in their opening game against Australia. They dropped Winfield-Hill and made Wyatt open today, but it didn't work at least today. It's too early to say if that move has failed or not, but they are now going to be desperate to win each and every match from here. They face India next, day after tomorrow, and then New Zealand, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Do remember to send us your #PoliteEnquiries on #CWC22, for Annesha Ghosh and Firdose Moonda on Twitter! Don't forget the hashtag. Until the next game, Aus vs WI tomorrow, it's goodbye and good luck from me, Vishal Dikshit, and Ekanth. Take a deep breath, you all. Ciao!

Bala: "Looks like a tough phase for English cricket though. After their men received the drubbing in the Ashes, it is now the turn of their women in WC so far. Nothing worse to have if they lose their next match also!"

Heather Knight: To be honest, we're gutted after losing three in a row. A batter like Wolvaardt, you can't give her that many chances, she'll make you pay. Our losses are not through lack of effort or graft, we have to turn things around quickly for the next game. We would have liked 15-20 more runs on the board, but they bowled well in the death and with their slower balls, we lost key wickets in crucial phases. Tammy and Amy batted really well, their partnership was outstanding. But we were a little bit short. We've got no other option (but to turn things around quickly), we have to win that (next game) and win that well. We'll be pretty gutted in that dressing room and we have to get ready and fighting soon. Things haven't gone our way and we believe we can do it in the next game.

Sune Luus: we do our best when we put the opposition under pressure. We have a world-class bowling attack and happy it turned out tonight. Kapp is world-class, every time she turns out to play shows her class, she's an inspiration for the youngsters out there. Lizelle hasn't played much in the last few months so she's taking some time to settle in, we don't want to put too much pressure on her. Regardless of what happens in the tournament, we've made history today and nothing is going to change that. Everyone back home is really proud of us. Very exciting (that Kapp said our best is yet to come).

Marizanne Kapp is the Player of the Match: Going out, just so relieved to contribute. It was a big game and we had to deliver, I'm glad we did. I think I just backed myself (laughs). I remember what day they did to us in that semi-final (in 2017) and we've been working on a few things, luckily it came off. What's been brilliant is we still haven't played our best cricket in terms of our batting. I'm just happy she watched (Dane van Niekerk), we obviously miss her a lot, this is probably for her.

The lethal bowler who sends a shiver down the spine of so many batters around the world has a beaming smile on her face. This is the most she might have ever smiled and laughed in front of the camera.

Tasmeem: "Not bowling Shrubsole's full quota was a mistake from Knight and it effectively cost the match. Shrubsole should've bowled the 46th, 48th and 50th over with Brunt or any other pacer either bowling the 47th or 49th. Those 10 runs from the 46th over was vital for South Africa."

Nitesh: "I think there is too much being read into England losses. They have had 3 big games up front- Aus, NZ and SA. Just see what next they face - Ind, Pak,WI,Ban. They might win all of them and run their way into semis." Four wins may not guarantee a spot in the semis though.

Nandimal: "2 tough must-win matches coming up for England Women if they are to stay in the competition. India and NZ"

9.07pm The South Africa players rejoice in the dressing room as Chetty and Ismail give each other a big embrace, their team-mates are running on to the field now. England players are dropping on their knees, this is the exact opposite of that night in Bristol when it was the semi-final in 2017. This is South Africa's first World Cup win against England since 2000 and Sampath tells me it's the first instance of the defending champions of a World Cup (men/women or ODI/T20I) losing their first three matches.

Vasumathy Ragha: "England have dropped their way out of the WWC!!!! "

Nat Sciver-Brunt to Chetty, 1 run

short ball, Chetty pulls it over midwicket and South Africa have done it! England are absolutely dejected, their third loss in a row

Just one to win, South Africa are almost there. Nobody in the deep now

Nat Sciver-Brunt to Chetty, 1 wide

another poor ball down the leg side, past the pads for a wide

49.1

Nat Sciver-Brunt to Chetty, 2 leg byes

run-out chance first ball because South Africa want two from it! Not a good ball as Chetty tucked it off the pads behind square, lots of screaming all around, for the ball, for the second run, for the fielder, and they sprint back, Chetty dives and eventually makes it. It's not a direct hit

Four to win from the last over. Remember, there's a Super Over in the rules if South Africa score just three. Who'll bowl the lat, Brunt or Cross or someone else? It's going to be Nat Sciver. The keeper is up, so are mid-on and mid-off

Just one shot away from a famous victory, South Africa

Shrubsole to Chetty, 1 run

too wide to Chetty as well, she steers it wide of point for another single

Kholis: "A true nail-biter whew! From 1st ball ..."

Shrubsole to Ismail, 1 run

into the pads this time and she tucks it towards fine leg for one

48.3
4
Shrubsole to Ismail, FOUR runs

short and wide, Ismail gets the room and scythes it away behind square in the gap. Not a great ball and Ismail gets four on her first ball

Yet another twist in the game, yet another riveting game in this World Cup. We're just into the 13th game, mind you. Shrubsole has brought England back, remember how she broke South African hearts back in 2017 by hitting the winning runs in the semi-final. She later did it in the final as well, against India. Comes around the wicket now to left-hand batter Ismail

Shrubsole to Kapp, OUT

really loud appeal, and it's plumb if there's no bat. Finger goes up and she reviews immediately! Oh my, there's no edge according to UltraEdge as Kapp goes for a swipe on the leg side after going down on a knee. Pitches on off, goes under the bat, hits her in front of middle and leg, and that's hitting the stumps!
