Patterson clinches victory for New South Wales

Kurtis Patterson ensured New South Wales continued their unbeaten start to the Matador BBQs Cup campaign in Brisbane with some final-over heroics against Queensland. For much of their chase, the Blues looked on track to overhaul the 243 made by Queensland, but they left themselves more work than they would have liked in the 50th over, with 10 runs still required.

Patterson struck Ben Cutting's first ball for six and then picked up a single, before Ryan Carters secured the win with three off the next delivery. It meant the Blues got home with three balls to spare and five wickets in hand, in a chase that should have been easier after Peter Nevill (74) gave them a solid start and got the score to 1 for 123 before his departure.

Peter George collected 3 for 30 and Luke Feldman picked up two wickets, but in the end Queensland just did not have quite enough runs to defend. They had chosen to bat and also enjoyed a solid start through Usman Khawaja (37) and Chris Hartley, but in his first game for New South Wales in three years, Pat Cummins ended Hartley's innings on 50.

Cummins finished with 3 for 60 and Doug Bollinger claimed 3 for 30 as the Blues kept chipping away at Queensland's batting, with debutant Simon Milenko the only real thorn in their side towards the end of the innings. Milenko struck 54 from 39 balls, including five fours and two sixes, but the Bulls were bowled out in the 50th over.

The result meant New South Wales had three wins from their first three one-day games of the summer, while the defending champions Queensland had managed only one victory from three matches.
