Fourteen wickets fell on day one on a bouncy Perth pitch as Western Australia conceded the upper hand when they lost four wickets after bowling out Tasmania for 187. Adam Voges and Steve Magoffin picked up three each for the Warriors before Tigers' Brett Geeves struck thrice to shake up their top order.
George Bailey and Tim Paine's 93-run stand for the fifth wicket saved Tasmania from a complete collapse after an early flurry of wickets. Magoffin and Brett Dorey took the first three wickets with 14 runs on the board, and when Daniel Marsh fell for 12, Tasmania had slumped to 4 for 49. Paine then joined Bailey, and the two batted cautiously, scoring at 2.7 an over in their 205-ball partnership. After trying seven bowlers to break the stand, the Warriors captain Marcus North turned to Voges. Voges did more than just break the stand; he removed Bailey, Luke Butterworth and Xavier Doherty in three successive overs.
Tasmania were bundled out in less than 73 overs, but they hit back strongly with the ball. Geeves removed Shaun Marsh and Liam Davis, the openers, for 5 each, and when he had Luke Pomersbach caught for 15, Western Australia were struggling at 4 for 33. Voges and Magoffin were unbeaten at close, and they'll have more work to do with the bat to ensure the Warriors get close to the Tasmanian total on the second day.
