The Victoria opener Chris Rogers recorded a satisfying double against his old state as he was responsible for securing a six-wicket win over Western Australia at the WACA. Rogers left the Warriors at the end of the last season and made sure the team did not forget him by scoring 115 in the first innings and 147 not out during the impressive chase of 318.
Victoria were set the target in 74 overs and reached it seven balls early thanks to Rogers, who struck 19 fours during his 232-ball stay. He combined in a vital 168-run partnership with David Hussey (87) that set the platform and stayed until the end in a hugely fulfilling performance. The century took his season tally to 621 runs at 88.71 in five matches.
Rogers, who played one Test last summer, has put some extra pressure on Matthew Hayden entering the second match against New Zealand in Adelaide on Friday. Hayden's form has been patchy since he returned from an Achilles injury while his partner Simon Katich has confirmed his spot with hundreds in the past two games.
Victoria's grip loosened slightly when they lost Hussey and Cameron White (0) in three deliveries from Brett Dorey, who took 3 for 75, but Rogers gained assistance from Andrew McDonald's 60 to make sure of the win. The Warriors declared at 8 for 404 in the first session after Steve Magoffin had added 66 and Dorey 39. Damien Wright led the bowling for Victoria with 5 for 53, but did not add to his wicket tally from the third day.
Western Australia were on top at 2 for 45, with Nick Jewell departing for 0 and Rob Quiney for 18, but Rogers and Hussey turned the match Victoria's way. The Bushrangers have a four-point lead over Queensland at the top of the table while the home side is third on 12.
