Tasmania conceded significant ground by losing four wickets for 49 runs after a strong second-wicket partnership of 143 between Ed Cowan and Steven Cazzulino at Bellerive Oval. Queensland's fast bowlers had struggled after being given first use of the pitch, but they hit back later in the day to leave game balanced.
After Alister McDermott had dismissed Mark Cosgrove early, Cowan and Cosgrove set about building a strong base. Cazzulino made 63 off 188 balls before he was the first of Ben Cutting's two wickets in successive overs. Jonathan Wells was lbw for a duck, leaving Tasmania on 3 for 162.
McDermott returned to trap Cowan lbw on 83, and at 4 for 176 all of Tasmania's hard work had come undone. Ben Dunk was unbeaten on a brisk 47 at stumps, having lost Beau Webster to Luke Feldman in the 90th over of the day.
