George Bailey missed the chance to build on a start for the second time in his last match before a possible Test debut, falling caught behind off the bowling of Daniel Christian for 37. In a rain-affected match, Victoria took first-innings points when they bowled Tasmania out for 250, well short of their 383 completed on the third morning, and by stumps they were 1 for 33 in their second innings with Rob Quiney on 19 and Peter Handscomb on 2.

Test opener Chris Rogers missed out on good runs for the second time in the match when he played on to the bowling of Adam Maher for 11. But Rogers entered the match in fine form, having scored a century in his previous Sheffield Shield match, whereas Bailey was keen for some more time in the middle against the red ball ahead of his likely Test debut.

He and Alex Doolan, the man he beat for a place in the first Test squad, combined for a third-wicket partnership that ended when Bailey pushed to cover and refused a single that Doolan wanted, and Doolan was run out at the non-striker's end for 41. Bailey's 92-ball innings ended when he was caught behind, while fellow Test squad member James Faulkner was bowled by Christian for 14.

Tim Paine top scored with an unbeaten 66 and legspinner Fawad Ahmed finished with 3 for 66, all his wickets having come from the Tasmania lower order. Earlier, Victoria added 44 to their first-innings score and Matthew Wade built on his hundred to finish with a career-best 119 before he became one of four wickets for Xavier Doherty.
