Tasmania 6 for 307 (Cowan 147, Bailey 69, Mennie 3-53) v South Australia
Scorecard
Ed Cowan scored his third century of the Sheffield Shield season as Tasmania moved steadily to 6 for 307 at stumps on the first day of their match against South Australia in Hobart. On an emotional first day of Shield competition since the death of Phillip Hughes, the Redbacks players wore shirts emblazoned with PH 612 as a tribute to Hughes, the 612nd player to represent South Australia.
After a minute's silence before play, the South Australians began well with two wickets inside the first 16 overs as Jordan Silk and Alex Doolan both failed. But Cowan and George Bailey then combined for a 145-run partnership that rebuilt the Tasmania innings before Bailey was caught behind off the bowling of Trent Lawford for 69.
Cowan and Jon Wells then kept the recovery going during a 97-run partnership that ended when Wells (43) was caught behind off Joe Mennie. Cowan fell soon afterwards for 147, which added to his 100 and 105 from the first two matches of the Tigers' Shield campaign.
Mennie finished with 3 for 53 after also getting rid of James Faulkner, who was bowled for 9. By the close of play, Tasmania had Ben Dunk at the crease on 9, alongside Ben Hilfenhaus on 10.
