McAndrew's five cuts through New South Wales to earn healthy lead

New South Wales-born quick Nathan McAndrew ripped the heart out of the Blues' batting to hand South Australia a big lead in their Sheffield Shield clash in Adelaide.

McAndrew claimed figures of 5 for 42 for South Australia to have NSW all out for 183. The hosts battled to stumps on day two at Adelaide Oval to be 57 for 3 in their second innings, with a lead of 167 runs.

Born in Wollongong, McAndrew has represented the Sydney Thunder in the BBL but made his path to the Sheffield Shield through New Zealand cricket.

He joined South Australia in 2021-22 at the age of 28, and on Monday made light work of his former home state.

The 30-year-old first had Daniel Hughes caught at slip driving on 13, with Ben Manenti taking a neat catch low to the ground.

He also bowled the in-form Jack Edwards, ending the allrounder's glorious start to the summer when he jagged one back in at the leaving right-hander's off-stump.

After also removing Jason Sangha and Ryan Hackney, McAndrew completed his five-wicket haul when he had top-scorer Matthew Gilkes edging onto his own stumps on 57.

The wickets marked McAndrew's sixth five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, after also taking 6 for 97 against the Blues at the end of last summer.

After McAndrew put South Australia firmly in charge, NSW were able to have some success late.

Debutant Jack Nisbet had Kelvin Smith lbw for 33 going back to a ball, before the 20-year-old also bowled McAndrew on 1 with the South Australian quick acting as nightwatchman.

Henry Hunt was the other South Australian to fall, caught off Edwards on 7 as the Redbacks relinquished some of their grip on the game.

South Australia were beaten by Tasmania in their opening-round match, while NSW drew with Queensland after being on top for the first three days.
