India fly miles for match without context

Match facts

March 30, 2012
Start time 1730 (1530 GMT)

Big Picture

If you thought India's away season had finally ended with the Asia Cup, then you are wrong. There's one more game, a Twenty20 against South Africa at the Wanderers, shoehorned into the tiny gap between the Asia Cup and the start of the IPL, which starts five days later. It's the sort of scheduling usually reserved for unofficial charity games. South Africa have just arrived from a full tour of New Zealand. When this game was announced officially earlier this month, the big question was not why not, but why.

Cricket South Africa has announced that this will be an annual affair, following last year's Twenty20 game between the two sides at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban. That match was Makhaya Ntini's farewell game. Tomorrow's match is dedicated to Jacques Kallis, and the proceeds will go to his scholarship foundation. The game might be for a noble cause, but is anybody aware that it is even happening? National newspapers in India have dedicated vast amounts of column space to the lead-up to the IPL. There's little mention that the national team has flown to the southern hemisphere again, to play a solitary match. The channel broadcasting the game in India have started a countdown to the game as a bid to aggressively market it in the middle of two ongoing international series.

Fans can be forgiven if they say they are fatigued, but MS Dhoni, the India captain, insists his team is not. It is his style to put a positive spin on everything, even when the ship is sinking. His team and the support-staff have clocked so many air miles in the last few months that they probably feel sick at the sight of airport lounges and hotel rooms. A one-off match with little context is the last thing they would have wanted.

South Africa have shown some compassion, resting their jet-lagged senior Test players (except Kallis and Lonwabo Tsotsobe). There's no rest for India's seniors, bar Sachin Tendulkar (though he doesn't play T20 internationals). Perhaps this could be seen as a last-ditch attempt to end a horrific season with a win. The IPL franchises have already vented their displeasure about the odd scheduling of this game because the India players are missing from the pre-tournament camps. The hosts are winding down their domestic season so this game hardly disrupts their plans.

A year down the line, if you forget this game took place, don't beat yourself up. In this era of "cricket excess", it's hard enough to remember a game which finished yesterday.

In the spotlight

When Richard Levi's name was called out at the IPL auction this year, it did not create a ripple. A blazing century off 45 balls (a record for Twenty20 internationals) in Hamilton made those franchises sit up. He was promptly signed up by Mumbai Indians. This will be most Indian fans' first chance to see him.

India's bowlers conceded 329 and 289 in their last two one-day internationals. Their generosity peaked in the match against Bangladesh, where they dished out full-tosses by the dozen. That malaise affected Australia recently. Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan have shown they can bowl swinging yorkers, though sporadically. Death bowling could be the difference for India.

Pitch and conditions

A batting track is expected. The altitude in Johannesburg, though, could test the India players.

Teams

The hosts seem to be approaching the game quite casually. The 13 players did not train, and the captain Johan Botha hadn't even met the coach Gary Kirsten the day before the game. There were rumours that the uncapped batsman Farhaan Behardian will play.

South Africa (probable) 1 Richard Levi, 2 Farhaan Behardian, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 Colin Ingram, 6 Albie Morkel, 7 Dane Vilas/Morne van Wyk (wk), 8 Johan Botha (capt), 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Rusty Theron, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe

India, for whatever logic, picked 15 players for a solitary match. There were no announcements from the India camp. Robin Uthappa, coming off good form for Karnataka in the domestic one-dayers, looks good for a recall. Manoj Tiwary has sat on the bench ever since he scored a one-day century in December. Will his wait end?

India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Robin Uthappa, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Ashok Dinda

Stats and Trivia

  • India are returning to the venue where they played their first ever Twenty20. Albie Morkel is the only survivor for South Africa from that game.

  • India lead the head-to-head in Twenty20s by an overwhelming 4-1.

  • The Wanderers has the highest runs-per-over - 8.23 - among grounds which have hosted a minimum of eight games.

Quotes

"There are a lot of young players we are trying to groom, and hopefully it will pay dividends in the future. From our point of view there is a lot of talent around, we need to give them the exposure they require."
Duncan Fletcher, India's coach, says this game has value after all.

"With the World Twenty20 coming up in October, every T20 game is important and you can learn in every game."
Johan Botha says preparation for the World Twenty20 will be the focus in the one-off game.

QASIM RAZA-Idont think u have fallowed the match , the time rain came INDIA were going great without loosing a wicket at that movement they were well ahead of SA at corrosponding overs, how ever the D&L ruined the match the team which has just thrashed our self asumed world class bowling which could not difend 330,may not be having problems in scoring those runs so dont pock in our affairs rather concentrat on ur team which may ` not be winning any match out side subcontinent with this over rated bowling & 2 bats man of international class , as spinners cant win matches out side as proved during ur 2010 tour of AUS , where ur team was white washed 3-0, 5-0 , even could not beat WI in WI , recently

Followed CHARITY match till the rain washed it away!Enjoyed it as India was in quite a charitable mood (Not taking anything away from Saffers batting though). Methinks it was developing into a very memorable historical match but I guess (after reading some of the "comments") the Good Lord heard the cries of the IPL that He had to send the rain gods to avoid a potentially disastrous situation! Imagine Gambhir's batting mood, Virat's capabilities, Raina's distress at conceding all those runs & his batting ability, Dhoni's ability to take a rabbit out of a hat & India's reaction in a crisis and the following days potential headlines "India beats SA in record breaking chase!" However, ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL!

On a more serious note,a Genuine charity can never be a waste of time! These charitable matches keep the soul of cricket alive.Soulless comments are not only a waste of time but a source of destruction.Or has an old soul become senile and obsolete?

India should win this to avoid creating new phanomenon of one match whitewash. Indian fans are being robbed of their money on the away tours when they show up in large numnbers only to witness whitewashes. India has lost virtually everything outside India. Win against pakistan in asia cup was more due to arch rivalry as wahab will face a fate similar to chetan sharma.

I find it a bit absurd to state that this game has no context. No international cricket match outside of the world cup has any context. International cricket is essentially a string of bi-lateral series that don't really build up to any goal.

@bbumbum and anyone trying to validate this match: Guys, this match is indeed pointless. To fly all the way from India to S. Africa to play ONE T20 match does not make any sense. You've mentioned how they are playing the most exciting format of the game and all. Well, the most exciting venue for "the most exciting format" (after the T20 worldcup) is most likely the IPL, right? And even they (IPL) are upset about this one-off game. This is too much toll on the Indian players.

  • on March 30, 2012, 13:50 GMT

Ridiculous waste of time & energy no purpose to play this game at all. hope someone gets injured to mis theIPL - then they will now how stupid they were in going to SA for a 4 hour gillythando

  • on March 30, 2012, 13:48 GMT

The match is for CHARITY! Not a waste of money!

  • zameel786 on March 30, 2012, 13:44 GMT

Yes , its a low stake game , but once you r representing the country you cannot ignore, I question the team selection , the biggest hitterof the game is missing , why Yusuf Pathan is not there, we could have done without Jadeja. the selectors will have to answer it , or else they will soon get the reply after the game is over, As for no one can forget the hard hitting of Yusuf Pathan in SA not long before, we cannot afford to miss Yusuf for this game.

  • on March 30, 2012, 13:44 GMT

I dont understand the need for this. The time taken for arranging & traveling is more than the time they are gonna be on the field. It should have been scheduled as a 2 or 3-match t20 series rather than a single ODI.

  • justtogood on March 30, 2012, 13:42 GMT

@ozhorse - just wait and see!!! you recon we have a 2nd 11 there well you might see some explosive hitting today!!!! levi, kallis, morkel, du plessis, ingram, botha, van wyk, and parnell can all HIT!!! and if levi gets going the game will be long over before the 10th over.....

  • riprock on March 30, 2012, 13:37 GMT

Rahul Sharma and Manoj Tiwary deserve one game after their long season on the bench. Uthappa, Gambhir, Kohli, Tiwary, Rohit Sharma, Msd, Yusuf, Irfan, Rahul, Praveen, Vinay. Looks like the BCCI have too money and don't know how to spend it that they are sending a squad of 15 to another continent for a span of three hours. More like an end of the season holiday..a reward to the players for their mindboggling performances in England and Australia.

  • on March 30, 2012, 13:28 GMT

No Doubt .... Sir Ravindra Jadeja Will play, No Place for Manoj Tiwari, Y. Pathan even if they deserve for chances in Playing 11's

Jus now Noticed a Comedy Cartoon In Facebook Regarding Sachin's 100th 100.. Everyone z telling their opinion... Our Captain MSD is telling that no is break this sachin's record else than " Sir Ravindra Jadeja".... Though its stated for fun, that many chances he is getting more than deserved players....

I agree that Ravindra Jadeja is a fine all rounder, and good prospect for future Indian team... but why do u give too many chances when he is not proving ?? let him play more Domestic matches, get him in shape and bring here...

I ll clearly tell that MSD is spoiling the present Indian team by adding him... and too spoiling young talent like Jadeja by giving him too many chances than he deserve.. these failures may affect his cricket life and we are surely going to loose a future prospect too... " Sir Ravindra Jadeja" is not fit for current Playing 11' s

  • Nampally on March 30, 2012, 13:08 GMT

This is an exercise in futility & totally insane. How much is it costing besides the usual risks of travelling & safety? Travelling time is much longer than the playing time for the first time in the history of any sport!. Who ever thought of this match needs his head examined. Fletcher says "There are lots of young players we are trying to groom"!.Utappa was discarded for a couple of years & is making a comeback. Only new guy I see in the XI is Dinda. So Fletcher's statement is a poor substitute for "Money Down the Drain".There are far better ways of utilizing the money in benifitting the game of Cricket in India, BCCI!.

  • Romenevans on March 30, 2012, 13:07 GMT

This match was planned after India got kicked out of Asia cup to save the IPL. It is a plan from BCCI people, don't fall for it. 16 comment on this article, shows how smart the fans are becoming. Way to go guys.

  • OzHorse on March 30, 2012, 12:48 GMT

Supposedly to benefit an unkown foundation for a guy who is still playing and isn't even in the normal SA T20 team???? SA is playing like a 2nd XI. This is garbage! Shameless profiteerng at its worst.

  • bbumbum on March 30, 2012, 11:38 GMT

Please give us solid reasons, why this match is pointless ?!. Two of the best T20 teams are going to play a match in its most exciting format, millions of fans are gonna be watching, why is it pointless or without context?. Do you call this as a "series" to give some context?. If this is out of context, how would you call a match that is played ... say (no disrespect) a series played between England and SL, with possibly half the number of people watching?. "senior sub-editor" shouldnt put his "personal" opinion out there under ESPN banner with no solid reasons, IMHO.

  • on March 30, 2012, 11:14 GMT

  • Aryansblue on March 30, 2012, 11:00 GMT

  • gabkutty on March 30, 2012, 10:46 GMT

Yusuf Pathan has good record against SA, Why always dhoni prefer Jadeja? To prove jadeja worth for IPL's highest bid ? In the absence of shewag why don't dhoni prefer hitter like Yusuf? Its a single match , even though tiwary, Rahul Sharma , Yousuf pathan are not in the squad huh ?

  • on March 30, 2012, 10:23 GMT

what if ........ Rain takes place??? Indians have to return without playing ? or 5 over match? So ridiculous arranging 1 T20, it should be at least 3 T20.

  • DIL7 on March 30, 2012, 9:59 GMT

  • gandhala on March 30, 2012, 9:41 GMT

this match has other purposes to solve .

india had a bad series in australia, india lost to bangladesh and lost asia cup. now how will bcci advertise IPL , this one of T20 is to solve that. India will win this one off T20 so that IPL will make some good money.

  • Marktc on March 30, 2012, 9:21 GMT

The game is for a good cause, there I agree. But with all the travel costs involved, would it not have been easier just to donate a large sum to the foundation? All this preparation etc for one T20 match- 6 odd hours of play is ridiculous. If it were part of a tour, it would make some sense.

  • on March 30, 2012, 8:57 GMT

  • Thandi77 on March 30, 2012, 8:40 GMT

ok so the match is for a good cause (kallis scholarship foundation) but what a pathetic time to schedule it!! Also why are they taking 15 players for a single t20 game flying all those miles, and also taking a strong side, why not take a few untried youngsters? Have you seen the SA line up, they have blooded quite a few youngsters resting the seniors. As for india i hope the likes of Rahul Sharma & M Tiwary get a game instead of carrying the drinks again. Also an opportunity missed to give some rookie quicks some experience in SA conditions all be it for 1 game. I would of loved to seen the likes of atul sharma, varon aaron (if fit) & manish pandey, mandeep singh in batting dept and few others to be given a chance, these are guys you call youngsters not the current squad which i'm sure the youngest is 24!! come on indian selectors think about it!
