Phil Jaques made his second century of the match as New South Wales consolidated their hold over Victoria on the third day at the MCG. Jaques overcame a weak start to forge two key partnerships, 90 with Peter Forrest (40), and 160 with Ben Rohrer (88). Peter Siddle had given Victoria some hope by sending back Phil Hughes and David Warner cheaply but a busy Jaques proved difficult to dislodge, as he had in the first innings. Despite hitting only eight fours in his 125, Jaques managed a strike rate of almost 75, before falling to Glenn Maxwell.

Siddle had earlier prolonged Victoria's innings for 15 overs in the morning, adding 56 with Damien Wright. Siddle remained unbeaten on 45 but Beau Casson grabbed the remaining two wickets to end with 4 for 56 as Victoria conceded a huge lead. NSW finished the day 449 runs ahead, and can push for a victory tomorrow. In any case, their position at the top of the points table will remain unchanged.
