At Sharjah, April 14 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 46 runs. Sri Lanka 4 pts. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's later batting fell away, but they had done enough. Atapattu stroked the ball in front
of the wicket for a third consecutive fifty; Sangakkara began with a six, ended with three fours
through the off side, and accumulated quietly in between. At 162 for two from 31 overs, a huge
total beckoned. But soon after Atapattu and Jayawardene hit one Franklin over for 18, there was
a serious misfire. Six wickets fell for 46, before Sinclair, the stand-in wicket-keeper, dropped Vaas
on one, allowing him to help scramble 35 vital runs. New Zealand never got going: Horne went
first ball, Astle remained out of form, and McMillan could not build the big innings required.
Tigerish fielding and tight bowling guaranteed Sri Lanka's place in the final.
Man of the Match: M. S. Atapattu.
