Australia's tournament ended amid familiar scenes, with rain falling and the covers in place. But there were no complaints: a scintillating run-a-ball stand of 159 between Morgan and Stokes spoke for itself. Morgan was eventually run out by Zampa from mid-on for an 81-ball 87 studded with five sixes, but Stokes's third one-day hundred had taken England well ahead on DLS when the rain arrived just before six. The result meant qualification for Bangladesh; one fan tweeted that his country should be renamed "Bengladesh".

Australia had two chances to progress. At 136 for one in the 23rd over, they had exploited England's tendency to drop short, only for Morgan to hold on to a swirling monster at cover to see off Finch. Henriques, out of his depth, dragged Rashid to mid-on, and Wood - having already accounted for Warner - persuaded Smith to chip the first ball of his second spell to mid-off. Roy then danced either side of the deep midwicket boundary in catching Maxwell, the first of five to fall for 15 in 26 deliveries. Both Rashid (with his best figures against anyone bar Ireland) and Wood (best bar none) finished with four wickets, and it needed Head's resolve to drag Australia to 277. Roy eased the first ball of the chase through mid-off, then played around the second, using up the review in desperation; Hazlewood accounted for Hales and Root.

Had Wade not dropped Morgan down the leg side off Hazlewood on 12, it might have been curtains for England. Instead, after a restorative 40-minute rain break, Morgan and Stokes rattled up the 100 inside 15 overs, ticking off England's best fourth-wicket stand against Australia, beating 139 by Allan Lamb and Derek Randall at Melbourne in 1982-83. Rain confirmed the inevitable: Australia were out and, thanks to the Lions, the Tigers were through.
