West Indies v Pakistan

Wisden's review of the first ODI, West Indies v Pakistan

11-Mar-2018
First one-day international At Providence, Guyana, April 7, 2017. West Indies won by four wickets. ODI debut: Shadab Khan (Pakistan).
With 150 needed from 16 overs, West Indies looked unlikely winners, even with six wickets in hand. They had never successfully chased a target over 300, and had just 176 one-day international caps between them, 69 fewer than Pakistan's Shoaib Malik alone. Pakistan's 308 was also a ground record. But Jason Mohammed blasted 91* off 58 balls - his best in ODIs - and rattled off the last 50 with Ashley Nurse, whose 15-ball 34* helped West Indies home with an over to spare. Pakistan were lacklustre in the field. Shadab took two wickets on his one-day debut, yet was far less threatening than in the Twenty20 series. They lacked intensity with the bat, too. Mohammad Hafeez - for some reason coming in at No. 3 instead of Babar, who had hit four hundreds in his last seven innings in that position - top-scored with 88, and shared half-century stands with Shehzad and Shoaib. But Hafeez dithered in the middle overs, taking 14 balls to move from 27 to 30, and couldn't build up enough steam at the end.
