Get out of Gayle free card

West Indies' first game of the tournament gave everyone a chance to listen to the refreshing 'Rally round the West Indies' anthem before start of play.

India chose to field, and their bowlers got off to an impressive start. The fielding was a different story: R Ashwin dropped Chris Gayle on zero.

Dwayne Smith played a truly awful innings, unable to push the ball off the square.

Dropping Gayle once is bad enough. But India dropped him a second time - this time Yuvraj Singh the culprit.

Ashwin's diving return catch to send back Smith made amends for his earlier miss. Or did it?

West Indies meandered along without conviction, and were soon in grave trouble when Gayle's amble between the wickets for a tight single caught him miles short.

Amit Mishra put West Indies in abject misery with the wickets of Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo off successive balls.

India's chase was delayed by a long quibble over whether West Indies' final score was 129 or 130. That they got so far was down to some late slogging off Ravindra Jadeja.

Despite Shikhar Dhawan getting a howler early, India never looked like they would struggle. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma took charge of the chase against some poor bowling.

It did go down to the wire though Ravi had no role to play in it. India eventually sealed the win in the last over, after some artificial excitement courtesy Yuvraj Singh's poor form.

Match between India & WI seems to be fixed, WI body language was telling the story. India took last over to chase such a lousy target with so many wickets in hand.

My favorite was Ashwin dropped Gayle. Took Smith. If the first was a disaster, the second was catastrophic - Brilliant and so true. If Yuvraj and Smith opened the innings for a franchise we would see the lowest T20 score of 38/2 at the end of 20 overs. Gayle was so frustrated by lack of strike he got run out. Samuels was so frustrated by people calling him Marlon Sammy he got stumped. Yuvraj was so frustrated that he was selected in the team he decided to show the fans he can still play Test cricket.

Mishra is thankful that Ashwin and Jadeja bored batsmen with lack of spin that they did not know what to do when they actually saw the ball spinning from and Indian bowler.

Ishant to Jadeja - C'mon man you only gave 21 runs, I can beat that any day!

This is the most one sided game I've seen since Gary Kasparov took on Wayne Rooney at chess. #WT20 #IndvWI 10:50 AM - 23 Mar 2014

@khurram Siddiqui The WI performance was very similar to Pakistan's. SO does that mean Pakistan players are looking to get into IPL and big money? Grow up man!

I think Ashwin along with Raina are the best choices for slips - Sure, Ashwin dropped a BIG catch but the percentage he takes in at slips is much higher then Rohit , Kohli or anyone else! Furthermore, the advantage of having Ashwin at slips is that he is not fielding where running and diving is required! Ashwin needs to work harder at catching. Ashwin also needs to look at variations in the line he bowls - he is becoming far too predictable on the leg stump line and if he comes up against Glen Maxwell (whose favourite is the slog sweep for six off the legs!) then we could have a Bhatti situation all over again!!

Yes. Ashwin drpos lot of catches at slips. But we don't have any other specialist close in fielder in the present team. The exit of Rahul Dravid is a void difficult to fill.
