Centuries from Robin Uthappa and Karun Nair helped Karnataka overcome a top-order collapse to punch the team's semi-final ticket with a 27-run win over Gujarat. The pair were joined at 31 for 4 and essayed a counterattack that fetched 209 runs in 214 balls. Akshar Patel (93) was the life of the chase, but the captain Vinay Kumar picked up a five-for to ensure Gujarat fell short.

After Karnataka were put in, Jasprit Bumrah and Kamlesh Thakor handed out ducks to three of the top five. Uthappa and Nair culled the rot, while keeping the score moving briskly. Karnataka were ushered past 50, then 100 and soon into a position of strength. Nair struck 14 fours and a six in his 121-ball 120 and when he was dismissed in the 44th over, Karnataka were a healthy 240. Uthappa carried his bat through the innings, collecting 132 off 135 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes.

Gujarat's reply revolved around their fifth wicket stand, which amounted to 139 runs. Akshar was the aggressor, his 93 coming off 78 balls while Rujul Bhatt held one end up. But with the required rate mounting - Gujarat needed 87 off 69 - both batsmen fell in successive overs and Karnataka regained control. Vinay accounted for the tail which wagged a bit, thanks to a 23-ball 30 from Rohit Dahiya.

Bengal 167 (Lahiri 32, Yo Mahesh 4-23) beat Tamil Nadu 90 (Shami 4-25, Dinda 3-13) by 77 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Mohammed Shami and Ashok Dinda exploited the substantial bounce and swing on offer at Eden Gardens to help Bengal move into the semi-finals with a 77-run win against Tami Nadu. Shami (4-25) and Dinda (3-13) picked up seven wickets between them as the visitors folded for 90 during their chase of 168.

Dinda, opening the bowling, attacked the batsmen right from the off and S Anirudha's dismissal off the third ball of the innings - caught off a thick edge by second slip - sparked off a Tamil Nadu collapse that they ultimately never recovered from. Such was the incisive bowling of Bengal's pace duo that Tamil Nadu's batsmen spent the majority of their innings swatting aimlessly as the ball just whisked past their outside edge.

M Vijay was the only batsman who put up some fight, making a laboured 24 off 85, with one four struck off his 64th ball. None of his team-mates could muster more than 12, as Veer Pratap Singh and captain Laxmi Shukla accounted for the remaining three wickets.

Bengal, batting first, had made 167 from 42.1 overs on the back of handy contributions from Shukla (30) and Saurasish Lahiri (32), which helped them recover from an early wobble caused by seamer Yo Mahesh who effected four dismissals to rattle Bengal's top order.

guys could u plss stop criticsing vinay kumar .... for god sakes he has got 23 wcks in 6 matches ... with economy of 4.6 .....and he is the leading wicket taker ... by a huge margin ....u guys never consider the fact tht he was forced to play in cement tracks vs aus ....no bowler had a chance in those wickets ... even mitch johnson was hammered .... bailey bowled part timers to save his bowlers but dhoni made all his bowlers to complete their 10... he is victim of flat pitches ...

this guy karun nair is an expectional talent.see how many centuries he got after his debut two months back.

Considering the dearth of fast bowling all rounders in the country at present, India should do well to give Shukla a look in. He can bat on green tops, and his bowling looks potent enough, especially on pace friendly conditions (and the next WC is in Australia). Also, Dinda deserves another chance. Fast bowlers hunt in pairs, and Dinda and Shami are the best "pair" India have now.

Vinay's height, bounce may be good on Indian pitches only. Dinda and Shami might be a good pairing for Team India. Anyway the best guide to all these players from this tournament could be an A-trip to NZ. Also a guy like Mandeep Singh on overseas tracks as a batsman should be looked at.

Inspite of big guns and BCCI backing, TN have been consistently outclassed by Bengal this year. However, still the DKs and Balajis and Vijays will find themselves wearing the Blue Jersey while Dindas, Laxmis and Sahas will remain in the wilderness!! Kudos to the Indian selectors and our most-cricket knowing person in the universe, Srinivasan!

It is time the selectors took a look at Dinda, Saha, Tiwary and yes, Shukla, despite his age. This was great bowling by Bengal. Getting a side with Vijay, Karthik, Badrinath and Aparajith plus Srikkanth out for 90 is no mean achievement, specially when defending 167. Surely the four named above deserve a chance ?

@ Arun Nayar Atleat Vinay Takes Wicket. See His performance against Ishant. Mohamad Shami also takes wicket. In Oneday Wicket taking ability is also important with this other bowler will able to control the runs.

Another superb win from KA. Vinay you beauty..what a ride for you and your team this season. Clearly shows Vinay is a super talent when used properly with confidence by the captain. If only he got as many chances as Rohit did..Time for Uthappa to be back. We have some amazing new talents and look out here they come!!

That enigma called Vinay Kumar!!!! Dude, do some introspection and find out what is it that you are leaving at home, when you play for India. Even in this match, you got tonked silly and probably got the wickets out of desperate Baroda batsmen. But still, think about it.

@shiva1990 giving away 85 runs in a ODI is terrible no matter how many wickets you take.

vinay Kumar's performance in this tournament. 5/85 2/20 3/47 5/34 5/42 3/9

international players can't play good in domestic cricket means where they will play and if young player play with them means they will also learn third grade cricket then one day india will be in lower rank no doubt.

Get Laxmi Shukla in the Indian side.He is Indias best allrounder for sure

Posted by CricketMakdi on (March 11, 2014, 16:00 GMT)

Selectors keep rotating the same old players who are not performing in the international level. Like Karthik, Rohit, Ishant,Ashwin to some extent Bhuvaneshwar. The result is we are sending wrong signals to talented players. Why don't we test the bench strength. Whats the point of not selecting Pandey and Pujara in the last game?

People in these pages need to stop rooting for Pathans or Sehwag based on their past. It is a good knock by Robin and I am excited about Karun. He looks like a good talent and hopefully will do well next season too. Time to expose people like him to Indian A team etc...

Posted by CricketMakdi on (March 11, 2014, 14:22 GMT)

@IndTheBest - Stop rooting for I Pathan, have you seen his bowling recently he is bowling at 121-125KM and no swing. He has lost the mojo. There are lot of other talent out there who are raring to go.

what a knock I'm very happy.......

Robin utthapa needs to learn from other indian team mates how to make dhoni happy to get back in indian side .

Akshar Patel looks to be a good allrounder....

Super knock by uttappa and his 2nd cenchury in vijay hazare ..now selectore should decide. .consistency performer robin see how he play today kar 31 fr 4 bt what inngs he caread super..and also nayar no dowt nayar fucher indian middle order batsman...

Time to draft Uthappa in India team to boost their top order in limited over cricket. R Uthappa is in form of his life, can be a WC and very good field. Indian makeshift openers are struggling at this time so there is no better time to take the right decision. It's a high time to get R Uthappa as opener, Pujara in top-middle order and Manoj Tiwari in lower middle order. My Top 7 are - R Uthappa, Pujara, Kohli, Yuvraj, Manoj Tiwary, Dhoni, I Pathan followed by Jadeja and other 3 bowlers.
