After 97 overs of play, Pakistan were clearly the better side on the day, and by some distance. Needing 39 off the last three then, with only two wickets in hand, West Indies managed to induce an almighty panic in the Pakistan ranks, which included the first boundary hit off Saeed Ajmal - three came in one cluster now; a fielder failing to pick the ball in the deep, costing them three runs; poor field settings in the last over with 15 to defend against the last pair of Jason Holder and Kemar Roach; and then an easy run-out fluffed off the last ball to allow West Indies a tie. West Indies celebrated as if they had won, and Pakistan were crestfallen, which was about right.

Pakistan will think of the erroneous call of a short run that went against them when Umar Akmal and Wahab Riaz were taking 52 off the last 4.2 overs. The two same men would now commit the final fatal mistakes. Before that, though, it was Sunil Narine who turned the momentum. Ajmal had been all over West Indies with the wickets of Lendl Simmons, who scored 75, and Dwayne Bravo in his ninth over to turn 62 off 42 with six wickets in hand into 39 off 18 with just two wickets standing.

With nothing left to lose, Narine swung and he swung clean. The first ball went flat over long-off, inside-out no less. Ajmal fired the next ball in, and Narine drilled it to long-on, but Riaz there moved to his left as opposed to right where the ball was. The angry Ajmal slowed the next ball down, and drew a dot, but Narine came down the wicket to send him to the left of long-off. Ajmal came back with a quick offbreak to peg Narine's off stump back, and it was down to 24 off 12 for Holder and Roach.

Despite a flicked four past midwicket, Junaid did his job, giving away just nine in the 49th. The difference between Junaid and Riaz was the angle. Riaz bowled over the stumps but with the same field of mid-off up and long-on back. He began with two singles first up, but that mid-off remained a risky placement. As it turned out, Holder threaded - an incredible shot for a No. 11 - the third between mid-off and cover for four. More incredible acts were to follow.

Riaz changed his length, and drew a dot with a short ball to make it nine required off the last two, but bowled length on the penultimate ball. Holder smoked it clean over extra cover. Dwayne Bravo would have been proud of that shot. Now they were panicking big time. A big conference resulted, but the field didn't change. Riaz bowled short, which more or less took the field down the ground out of the equation. Holder swung, got a thick edge, which flew to third man who was aptly stationed fine. Junaid fielded well and sent in a decent throw on a decent bounce but just to the right of the keeper.

Holder was gone by yards had Akmal, a part-time wicketkeeper lest it be forgotten, collected it cleanly. He didn't. Holder made it. He over-ran so far West Indies couldn't even try a possible overthrow. The ball, though, had gone straight to straight midwicket.

West Indies might have come out of this level in the series, but their approach of backing themselves to keeping pace with astronomical asking rates in the final few overs against an attack that has no obvious weak link is ill-advised. Chasing 230 on a good batting track, West Indies lost early wickets - as has become their wont - and consolidated so slowly that the asking rate crossed six in the 26th over. After the early blows, Pakistan had enough overs of Ajmal towards to all but ensure the victory.

Pakistan followed the same pattern when they were asked to bat first. Ahmed Shehzad and Nasir Jamshed didn't do much better than Johnson Charles and Chris Gayle, the last of whom now has the worst average among all openers who have played at least 10 innings in the last 12 months. It was followed by slow rebuilding with Misbah-ul-Haq, like Simmons, scoring 75.

At that time, the big difference seemed to be the West Indies part-timers at the death. Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard on paper should have been no match for Ajmal and Junaid and Riaz. It seemed to be going down that route until pressure burnt off that paper, and a side that used to be the most feared in tight situations now added one more panic attack to their recent history.

Team combination is very poor. pakistan playing with 6 bowlers who can bowl their quoted 10 over (6x10=60 overs) in every match without any problem and still can not defend 230 runs. all other teams are got good batsmen up to no.9 but pakistan batting stops at no.7. when pakistan realize that a team can not become a good ODI team only depends on bowling or batting. A good ODI combination should be (5 batsmen + 1 batting all rounder + 1 Wicket keeper + 2 bowling rounders + 2 Bowlers ).

Yet again a 'POOR' show of captaincy by Misbah Ul Haq!! I hope & pray that this is his last series as ODI captain!! Afridi deserves the captaincy & he should get it! Afridi is the man who can perform in this role FAR, FAR better than any player in the team! Lets not forget people: Umar Akmal & Afridi come to bat when there are hardly 10 overs left in the innings and they scramble for runs try to put decent score... If they do then they are considered heros and if they don't then they are dropped... Imagine this ordeal.... Drop freaking Hafeez, Nasir, Asad from the team; when was last time they performed...

I think both teams played well, however in these days the umpiring has become a major issue and lots of bad decisions are seen to made one after another. The umpire decision in giving one short run of Kamran Akmal was crucial and the result could have been different.

Misba needs a rest ae a captain.Saeed Ajmal needs to take over him.No need for Haffez and Afridi and Riaz in plsying 11.pak hav better alrounder than them in nsme like Abdul Razzak,Hammed Azazm, Shoib maksood, Anwar ali can hit the ball for mikes he is a clean striker.its a logic if u pkay whith proper batsman than you will score more and u can defend the total also with your avrage bowling unit like India but quality bowling will not win u matches with 200 to defend.if i can select a team for Pak i dream of selecting this squad1)Ahmed Shazad 2)jamshed 3)Shoib maksood 4)Umer akmal 5)Misba 6)Harris sohel 7)Abdul razzak 8)Anwar ali 9)Saeed Ajmal my captain 10 )juned khan 11)irfan my reserves sould be 12)Fawad Alam 13)Hammed Azam 14 ) Raza hassan 15) Mhd Rizwan 16) Mhd AMIR if he is back playing.Pak needs move on with type of team and groom your young players by giving them matches. i feel its only 2015 world cup than misba is going to retire than what will pcb.Need to groom players.

@ Posted by SaadRocx on (July 20, 2013, 15:10 GMT) :

I compleately agree with you. W.Riaz should not be in the team. Misbah's captainy & knock were pathetic putting extra pressure on the other batsmen. As a result now Jamshed has lost his aggression. If Misbah continues as captain the team will be filled with tuk-tuk's like him.

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 20, 2013, 17:55 GMT)

Why do Pakistan need a sixth bowler (W.Riaz), when Pakistan's batting is so week and fragile. W.Riaz should be replaced by UMAR AMIN.

Afridi & Hafeez are doing better than Riaz in the bowling roles. Their batting can be an added bonus if it clicks. Add to that Afridi fielding and Hafeez better than average fielding. Riaz is a horrible filelder. SOHAIL'S debute was not bad at all.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 16:56 GMT)

Misbah is the most senseless captain in world cricket today. It the 2nd time in last two months when he could not defend a target of 15 runs in the last over. First time it was against Ireland. That match ended in a tie only because Ireland's target was increased because of D/L system. Here he chose Wahab Riaz for the last over because he never knew that Wahab is the most expensive Pakistani ODI bowler. Perhaps nobody in the Pakistan think tank knew about it. He did not let Hafeez bowl his full quota when he was bowling beautifully to WI established batsmen. Hafeez was the least expensive of all the Pakistani bowlers. Misbah remains listless on the ground and very rarely seen guiding his players. When he scores 50's Pakistan's other batsmen come under pressure to maintain the increased run rate and when he gets out early they are under pressure to save further loss of wickets. Pakistan needs a young and aggressive captain as soon as possible.

@Jonathan Bynoe: We are not complaining about Misbah just about his slow batting, it includes his wrong decisions, If Hafeez is not performing why he is playing in the team? Nasir Jamshed is being given continuous chances, but axe always fall on Asad Shafiq, looking at Misbah slow approach other batsman have also gone defensive, Now Muhammad Rizwan WK is with the team, he is a good batsman, instead of giving him chance they are playing with part time keeper. They threw Razzaq/Hamad Azam for Wahab Riaz. In champions trophy they got umer amin in place of Afridi, and we saw the performance of umer amin. FYI Pak team is always selected with suggestion of the Captain. And in last but not the least, if Misbah slow approach is not going to win matches for Pakistan, why he insist to play the same approach time and again.

@Reuelsean , well said! One sure way to give the opposition the upper hand is to panic. WI supporters seem to think that the opposition do not improve from game to game or are entitled to apply what they learn from playing against the WI as factors of what is needed to beat them.

Posted by bouncer709 on (July 20, 2013, 16:26 GMT)

@Mahi Kashmiri: People have short memories, Yousuf made place in the team when inzi, Saeed, Younis khan were part of the team, this Misbah made first match to play in 2001, but was incompetent to make place in presence of inzi, saeed and other stars.

Had Misbah got out early yesterday, Umer Akmal and Wahab could have played some more shots, and Pakistan could have scored some more runs. Razaq was in the team because waseem and Inzi believed his abilities, now Misbah is captain and he is making the players to bat at no 3 which he believes in, he get rid of Razzaq saying he can't control senior players, He trust in Wahab Riaz as a bowler, so he gave the result, in other matches he dropped Junaid khan for Asad Ali. In last 3 matches afrdi bowled one single bad over, so he did not give him over again, which repent him in the last.

K. Roach's batting ability in pressure cooker situation is phenomenon. In almost one month time he has proved it thrice and pulled off West Indies victory twice and one tie.

I can't describe the anger of the fans after this performance. This was the Best possible team that Pak could put, but still we lost? It's all because of Pathetic batting and captaincy of Misbah..Why in the world did we keep on persisting with Wahab when he could use Afridi and Hafeez's quota of Overs? Why is Afridi in the team if you're only gonna bowl 4 overs from Him? Why each and every batsman in pakistani team started playing ODI's like a TEST? I think it's high time for Media to postmortem the team's pathetic performance for over a year now..and Wahab is a street bowler..Bring Gully (Umer Gul) or Muhammad Amir back... (Cricinfo Plzz Publish)...

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 15:08 GMT)

It was a good game but it was also poor captaincy on Bravo's part. He bowled 7 overs and went for 50 runs while Narine bowled 9 and went for 55 without a wicket. Despite the fact that Narine bowled excellent in the previous game he should have seen he was not doing as well in this game and let him bowl less. Bravo on the other hand should have never bowled 7 overs while Samuels sat on the sidelines with only 3 over for just 4 runs. His captaincy is too conventional and predictable. In cricket and in limited overs in particular, the captain must be able to think on his feet and not make decisions based on what happened in the past. Why WI is experimenting with Bravo as captain?... I may never know.

Posted by tommyhawk on (July 20, 2013, 14:43 GMT)

I am a Chanderpaul supporter but would not recommend his recall at this stage. Chanders is clearly on the way out. WI needs to think long-term and should be investing in long-term talent like Jonathan Carter.

I also agree that it is time that Gayle and Pollard show some consistency. It is unfair to others that they still retain their play despite a long run of poor performers. Gayle is a specialist at scoring a big innings then almost nothing for the rest of the series. Time to show some leadership!

Posted by Stark62 on (July 20, 2013, 13:45 GMT)

My words, what has happened to the aggression of Shezhad and Jamshed?!?!

I think Misbah's plan for the openers, is to block and see off the new ball, which is RIDICULOUS!!

These two are allowing the bowlers to settle and bowl to them, whilst Hafeez at 3 is causing havoc for everyone.

Prompt Umar up the order because his scores down at 6 are being wasted, plus Harris deserves to be promoted too. Ideally it should be Nasir, shezhad, Harris, Umar, Misbah and Hafeez. It sounds so simple but yet, Misbah cannot comprehend it.

On another note, Bravo is a poor captain and Sammy is head and shoulders above him.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 13:45 GMT)

@coverdriven, You talk as if you know cricket, so here goes Best for Pollard gives us a bowler who will swing the bat and the end of the innings, With Pollard we have a mediocre bowler and inadequate batsman. How can you criticize Narine when he did the job your Pollard is suppose to do, Sunil's 3 strikes is what gave the windies a hint of victory. Gayle plays only for IPL and even then cant produce in the big game. Samuel's dont seem to be happy now that Sammy is not capt. Why is Charles keeping wicket when Simmons is in the squad, too many free rruns behind the wicket as for Best 50-2 about 20 runs were scored after the keeper couldnt collect simple catches, even if they were wides they were still stoppable, watch the game not the stats.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 13:39 GMT)

I watch cricket because of Afridi he is real entertainer to me however disappointment that he's not batting up the order so he can play more fine innings with bat given that he bats at tail-end means has no choice except to "slog" thus putting him an awful position to defend himself. Misbah bats an test match innings puts the man on other end under pressure to play special shots ;lowers the run-rate to near death and if it was not for "super" umar akmal tail-end batting then pakistan would not have managed even "200". Hafeez haven't played any decent innings in ct or south africa odi series, he should have been dropped and Abdul Razzaq or Hammad would have been better then him in this " odi series". Umar Amin will be good sub to Ahmad Shehzad for next match.Batting order needs shuffling with Misbah down in batting order and afridi up the coach should take this initiative otherwise pak will loose this series "remember" as Misbah is playing too0 slow in this series , he played well in ct

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 13:38 GMT)

Im tired of hearing pakistanis complain about the way misbah bats, your lucky to have a solid batsman who consistently makes runs for the team even if its slow,if guys like hafeez and afridi and company where as consistent with there rolls you would see a big difference in pakistans scores, they would comfortably have scores in excess of 250 which is more than enough for Ajmal,Irfan and company to defend. So dont blame misbah for CONSISTENTLY MAKING RUNS slowly blame the others for CONSISTENT INCONSISTENCY.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 13:38 GMT)

What miracle? We are good enough to tie the game...it is cicket and the next t ime on sunday we will win..Gale Samuel Brava Narine Sammy lets do it.. bounce back.

Posted by Reuelsean on (July 20, 2013, 13:26 GMT)

Good game, in the end. Well played to simmo, well played to Narine, Roach and Holder, didn't know Holder could bat, happy to see. Gayle needs to play his natural game, he looks stiff, and really out of sorts. I'm not going to bash the guy, cause when he is doing good, everybody sings his praises, even some of you here who question his ability. In terms of pollard, I agree that he needs to do better, but he has been improving over the last few seasons, now u guys want to dispose of him cause he has had a bad year so far? the team on paper is good enough, the guys just need to perform, changing players wont make a difference. When chanderpaul was playing ODI's for the wi, we still weren't winning matches. This team just needs to start performing, full stop. I Wish Bravo and his boys all the best.

Posted by Tronyai on (July 20, 2013, 13:26 GMT)

Bring in chanderpaul for samuels and let him open with gayle and bring charles lower down the order because it is a difficult job to wicket keep and open the innings.pollard also has to be droppped for milller . WI squad chamnderpaul gayle bravo simmons charles dj bravo sammy miller/ narine roach holder rampaul.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 13:20 GMT)

Something must be done with Samuels. He without doubt is not a team player Take a look at the last two matches. Is that the role of the #4 batsman in a limited overs match? Where is the rap against Shiv? Pure nonsense in light of the atrocious performances we are witnessing.

Posted by ihaq1 on (July 20, 2013, 13:11 GMT)

i think a wicketkeeper should be able to judge a balls direction when it is coming from third man...should try rizwan ahmed as wicketkeeper, keep akmal as batsman and drop shezad...asad who looks a terrible oneday bowler can at least bowl into the legs at the end...seems a terrible choice by misbah of who should bowl the last overs...preference should be for irfan, ajmal, afridi in that order...hafeez should be dropped to number six as he has no scores to suggest that he is a capable batsman

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 13:05 GMT)

CG has become the "virender sehwag" of WI cricket! But the major concern is not that he is not scoring runs but the ways that he gets out. His real problem is his 45 degree angle batting technique of late which resulted in the ball crashing into his stumps in the match. More often than not he gets out caught behind the wicket. He needs to play with a straight bat ie work on his batting which he doesn't seem to be doing. From the Bang. tour his batting seems to be going backwards. Pollard came in at the end and had to try to score some runs so I wouldn't blame him to much as he got a yorker which is one of the best deliveries at the death. Why WI isn't playing more test cricket to improve these batsmen's technique beats me.

Posted by delboy on (July 20, 2013, 13:05 GMT)

The continued reference to Gayle and Samuels not performing because its not IPL is typical coming from those who lack any knowledge of the psychological side of professional sports. There also needs to be an analysis as to what they really want a TEAM performance or a constant reliance on an individual? Winning cricket matches consistently is about how the TEAM performs. So when one player fails the team should not. Recently Gayle has had a run of poor performances..A brave coach would drop him however; his achievements is the catalyst which has spurred Simmons to perform..Narine's rise has triggered a sense of growing consistency in Roach..These players crave IPL contracts, so of this is a bad thing why do the WI not stick to patriotic amateurs? Team members are valuing their place and taking responsibility. Others are showing that they are HUMAN who are subject to frailty.

Posted by UK_Chap on (July 20, 2013, 12:47 GMT)

Why on earth does Misbah continue to miscalculate the death bowling, Irfan should have bowled the last over, Wahab Riaz is the biggest load of you know what. It is incredibly infuriating, why is he still in the side ?.

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 20, 2013, 12:46 GMT)

I am satisfied with HARIS SOHAIL'S debute. When Sohail departed on 26 his strike rate was 70 where as Misbah was arround 60. Even till the end Misbah's strike rate did not go beyond 67. WELL DONE HARIS SOHAIL, I hope he gets a fair opportunity in the remaining games.

Hafeez needs to bat lower down so that Haris & Umar Akmal get decent stay on the Pitch. I sincerly believe Hafeez's best days as a batsman are far behind him.

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 20, 2013, 12:43 GMT)

The only batsman scoring runs in the Pakistani team (MISBAH) is the slowest batsman in the World. As a result if he scores Pakistan struggle to get past 225 AND THIS IS THE REASON WHY HE DOES NOT HAVE AN ODI CENTURY. At this rate he never will have an ODI century.

Further, with such a fragile batting lineup, why does Misbah need 6 bowlers. In the 3rd ODI, in the 10 overs between Afridi & Hafeez only 39 runs were scored. Whereas Wahab Riaz gave away 63 runs in his 10 overs and has claimed only one (1) wicket. Afridi alone has nine (9) wickets in the series. Riaz has only one (1) wicket in the series so far. Common sense dictates that W.Riaz should be dropped for Umar Amin who is a batting all-rounder. When will Misbah learn from his mistakes? His mistakes are costing Pakistan far too many games.

Posted by coverdriven on (July 20, 2013, 12:28 GMT)

I have a rel problem with the way Marlon Samuels is batting. He seems to be batting for himself, imagine all the middle order is afraid to bat with him because he will run you out. So there is no rotation of the strike. I say however persist with this team and they will grow stronger. Bravo and Samuels will be the batsmen that will do the Chanderpaul role by 2015. But they must rotate better toooo many dot balls. Imagine saying Tino Best for Pollard dats rubbish. Best takes wickets expensively he doesnt seem to want to learn control just bowl fast and hoping is not good enough. In Trinidad India had fast bowlers having there best figures on that track Best had 2 for 50 and go watch the wickets legside caught behind, Not good enough. Drop Gayle down the order to deal with Ajmal he is a left hander. Narine needs to be beaten with a strap giving his wicket away so easily every time. Does he not see Roach approach. I still think captain Bravo must share the death overs( he is predictable).

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 20, 2013, 12:26 GMT)

Shehzad, Nasir , Hafeez and Afridi combined played 110 balls scored only 52, Misbah alone scored 75 of 112, so who played Slow. People have short memory Misbah filled the boots of Yousaf but you don't realise when Yousaf were playing , Pakistan had Saeed Anwar, Inzi , Younis khan, and Razza in the Team, They were all big players, Misbah only had Younis Khan and Razzaq in few matches, We don't have genuine opener in The Team, don't compare Yousaf and Misbah, I believe if Misbah had same players as Yousaf era then he would score freely , knowing the fact that if he gets out cheaply other will perform, Get rid of Hafeez Wahab bring in Rehman and Rizwan in Playing 11, Haris should Bat at 3 and Umar Akmal at 4, Rizwan Behind The Stump. Good Luck in The Next Game.

this west indies team is playing absolutely atrocious cricket.i can not believe that that this is the same team that was making a slow upward climb up the ladder of world cricket just six months ago.what the hell has gone wrong u ask?as usual, some of the most nonsensical decisions have been taken in regards to the selection of the team and to the captaincy.therin is the cause of this poor substandard performance thus far.bravo is not a thinker, and his cricket skills are ordinary.it was an injustice to west indies cricket to take the captaincy from a commited hardworking and improving sammy to a total letdown like bravo with substandard skills and no heart or passion for west indies cricket.maybe if it was ipl,it would be differrent.

Posted by GreatUnderstaning on (July 20, 2013, 12:05 GMT)

Pakistan has the worst batting line up in the world reason being lack of temperament to wait for the ball to be delivered from the hands of the bowler and then decide what shot to play. Each paki play with predetermined mind . Their heads fall away from the line of the ball for the same reason. No batsman in longtime in pak batting line up seems to be playing as per the ball , they play as per pre assumptions.

Posted by smjr on (July 20, 2013, 12:01 GMT)

The new chief selector Moin Khan is to work hard in finding good players who are technically and mentally strong. Please do not select players solely on the performance of our domestic cricket as the quality of bowling is very poor as bowler gives too much width bowling and batsman score heavily. We need to find players that are equally good on the back foot as well on the front foot have good reflexes and lastly do not play pre determined shots rather play each ball according to its merit.

Posted by smjr on (July 20, 2013, 11:54 GMT)

Yesterday match is yet another trademark of Pak cricket. The batsman look out of sorts. In the crunch overs they do not know how and where to bowl. The team lack confidence and often become nervous in these situation time and again. It look that the team has no game plan and played purely on the natural instincts. All Pak victories in the past are due to some individual brilliance but when it comes to team effort it always failed. The reason of Pak team (batsman and bowlers) become nervous is that they have only one or two game plan rather they should learn to adopt 5 or 6 game plan so in a tight situation when their limited plans did not work they lost confidence and become nervous. Top teams like india and South Africa has variety of game plan that is why they have confidence in their abilities and won matches from losing positions which is the hall mark of champion teams. These players Hafeez , Shahzad, Nasir jamshed are single dimensional players having limited range of shots.

If Wahab is replaced with Abdur Rehman in the next two ODIs, it will be series winning move from Misbah. he needs to think out of box, WI doesn't play spin well and ball is also spinning and gripping in these conditions.

Posted by bouncer709 on (July 20, 2013, 11:34 GMT)

People have short memories, but I remember Misbah captured place of Muhammad Yousuf in ODIs, he is not playing the role what Muhammad Yousuf did for Pak. and after every match he excuse that he was playing in pressure situation. He played 123 matches but I have never seen him playing normal run a ball. In the other match he played 121 balls and hit one boundry? How could he make people fool that in those 121 balls he did not face at least 10 balls that deserved to be hit for boundry. or West Indies bowlers are too good that they can do 121 balls for only one boundry.

I wonder y all d misbah haters ignore d impotency of hafeez nd selfishness of jamshed. Lets say dat misbah retires tmrw, I really wonder who captains d side nd it is not a farce dat pak wil struggle to play full quota of overs wid out him. It is not afridi dat was being made so called space goat but it was misbah who not only taking d pain of captaining a most disorganised team nd being d best batsman, yet taking al d bashing.if he hav confidence dat d batsmen follwed by him still does d job on regular basis, he wud hav played his natural aggresive game. Well People say i mean experts say that who doesent like misbah doesent know about cricket.. They say he stays at the crease and doesent get oout in pressure situation..Okay i belive he stays at the crease but he is destroying batsmen at the other end..He blocks the over and then the other batsman realizaes to score some runs and in this way he gets out... This is what he did In Pak vs India Semifinal.. He blocked and Umar Akmal had no choice and he got out due to useless shot.Yesterday Harris Shohail was desperate to make runs as Misbah was playing at other side..

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 20, 2013, 11:02 GMT)

One of the worst CAPTAINCY by Misbah. May be worst in the world. Why in the world is he insisting on having WAHAB RIAZ in the team. W.Riaz is one bowler too many in the team. Irfan-Junaid-Ajmal-Afridi-Hafeez are sufficiently good bowlers. There is no place for Riaz. He should get a proper batsman in team. Every time it is their batting that suffers.

Also Hafeez's days are a batsman are long behind him and now it appears that his days as an all-rounder may also be numbered. He is not getting any wickets these days. In this sereis Hafeez is wicketless. Though he has remained economical. In this ODI Misbah gave him only 6 overs, does it mean something?

This series has been so mediocre in terms of batting that the sooner it is forgotten, the better... Not one batsman has played what can be called a fluent or high quality innings... Pakistan, which has produced many classy batsmen in the past is now dependent on a grinder like Misbah to take them to decent totals ... and now that Afridi hit 76 runs in the first ODI, he'll have a free, all expenses paid ticket in the side for another 10 or 12 matches!! Terrible stuff!

Posted by bouncer709 on (July 20, 2013, 10:56 GMT)

@Khurram S Chaudhry: In these 33 balls 52 were scored. do you expected 100 in these 33 bals? why do you expect that every time other play slowly and Afridi will recover the run rate? Afrdi can not be blamed he tried what he was expected to do, In that situation Afridi could have easily played 15 balls and make 15 runs with 100 strike rate and go not out, so no body could have blame on him, but he did not care of his self position n improve his average, he was looking to get maximum for the team. Other play 40, 50, 100 balls, but even after playing 100 bals they are yet not settled, and when it is time to hit big shots, they get out. Everybody else is trying to secure his place in team. Only umer akmal and afridi seems to be not caring about their wickets, they are trying to get some valuable runs.

Use of Ajmal in the last overs has not proved a very good decision at all. He gave easy runs in T20 World Cup to Mike Hussey, Same he did against Narine in Champions Trophy and Now again in this match. Pakistan should focus on pace attack in the death overs, rather than revising the same mistake over and over again.

Posted by MichealT on (July 20, 2013, 10:31 GMT)

Pakistan could have won it but it was a fair result in the end. Both teams are weak in several departments and that results in an exciting match. Wahab Riaz is not a bad bowler but that's how you learn. Misbah needs to do proper maths with the bowling changes and let Ajmal and Irfan close out. He could have given Hafiz one more over before Ajmal close out with Fifteeth over. But these these happens and that's how you learn. Pakistan's batsman once again disappointed with their pathetic batting. I have no doubt that I will ever see them passing 300 again unless they produce Inzi, Yousuf, Younis or Razzak again. But One thing is really surprizing, Where is the Afridi of the first one day. Now he could not finish his 10 overs not to mention his batting. Is he off color or there is something else. I wish he plays for the team instead of something elase.

Posted by rumcork69 on (July 20, 2013, 10:19 GMT)

I will say it again to the West Indies camp, you drop a keeper because he was not scoring runs on a consistent level (still laughing at the decision). We need that rule to apply to the top six batsmen. I am big fan of Gayle, Pollard, Dwayne and Marlon but the selectors needs to be honest to the players that is the only way they will look to develop their game. These four guys have not played a 50/50 domestic game in ages in the west indies so these pitches are very much unfamiliar hence one reason for the poor form.

@CRICKETILOVEU->It's like our minds are connected.I myself was searching for the stats of Hafeez & just saw your comment..Hafeez is so bad yet nobody talks about him.Afridi flops in a match & the whole world points fingers towards Afridi. It's like Hafeez has some invisible cloak using that he gets away every time after a bad performance.Hafeez has been given so many chances. It's all politics being played. He knows that he is the next captain so taking his place in the team for granted. He has got no place in the team now, lost the opening slot & now cant bat down the order.Well tbh he was always bad even as an opener

Posted by bouncer709 on (July 20, 2013, 10:08 GMT)

Simply wrong use of bowlers and wrong calculations from Misbah, he made Hafeez and Afirdi to bowl 10 overs collectively, and all other bowlers to complete 10 overs, he should have given few more overs to Afridi and Hafeez in middle so he could have choice at the end.

I wonder at the end Misbah was saying "we were short 30 runs", I think he wanted to say I was short 30 runs of my century, how could he say "we were short" at the time he was playing it was looking he was targeting 200, even 200 was looking difficult to achieve, but he should say thanks to umer akmal and wahab riaz who played some strokes to get 30 runs extra.

Next match, drop Hafeez or Nasir jamshed, Include wicket keeper Muhammad Rizwan , give him chance, he is a good batsman. Give Ahmed Shehzad more chances, he saved many runs in fielding and a superb catch, unleash him to play strokes, tell him that he is going to play all matches to remove pressure from him.

Posted by Chaudry_Cricket on (July 20, 2013, 10:07 GMT)

Seriously when will Misbah understand that Umar Akmal needs to bat at three and that hafeez should bat at 6. Umar akmal can be a great asset for us at 3. Why is Ahmed Shehzad blocking every ball if your an agressive then be agressive. Why does pakistan still not know how to rotate strike. I hope after this series that Misbah retires as captain if not then sack the guy and let some young guy take over (try the south africa experiment when they made smith a young captain). And then you will Whatmore stamp his authority and make sure we play attaking cricket.

@LionsofLanka: Ya we saw what your team can do in the tri-series...lol.." Lions would definitely chased 230 in 28 to 32 overs with 9 wickets in hands"...seriously????

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 20, 2013, 9:53 GMT)

Absolutely 3rd class captaincy by Misbah in insisting for 10 overs by W.Riaz. Moreover the timing of giving him the overs was worst. Thirdly, the fields employed by him in the last few overs was beyond everyones mind.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 9:43 GMT)

most teams are scared of losin. pakistan are scared of winning, because they are not used to winning much these days. the team, like misbah, are so negative, defensive minded and timid that they lose from point of winning. Even aggressive batsmen like shahzad, jamshed have become tuk-tuk masters and shed their normal attacking game. misbah plays so many dots that other batsmen feel pressure and throw their wicket away. However their batting is so fragile, they need to keep him, but only as a batsman. He needs to be sacked immediately.

Posted by hamza893 on (July 20, 2013, 9:21 GMT)

The only difference was the umpires,Steve Davis did not even check closely the dismissal of Shehzad, the one short run that was given wrong.Pakistan has been losing too much matches with this stupid umpirings

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 8:57 GMT)

Once again Misbah showing he is the back bone of this team.Seriously i dont thnk Pak will ever be able to play the full 50 overs without him. Disappointing stuff from Nasir and Shehzad..they have soo much potential but need better temperament and consistency. Good to see Umar Akmal back in form in this series, such a good player he is but again needs to be consistent. Mr. "professor" is in all sorts of trouble dont think he'l be able to continue on like this..needs to start scoring runs in the middle order else hes just putting more pressure on the already under pressure misbah. Afridi cant afford to bowl badly in any game as thts the only way he gets a place in the team.Good to see Junaid back, no way you can make such a fine bowler sit on the bench. Hope Wahab improves his death bowling to complete the best bowling attack in the world..and yes congratulations Windies but dont get too happy we are going to win the next two matches for sure!!

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 8:51 GMT)

Well it was a good match.Pak should have won it but the last Windies Duo have changed it. It was Misbah mistake. I think Afridi should cone up the order 3rd or 4th,then he can play with his understanding and can give a blow to net runrate. Misbah should think this and also about the last over giving to Irfan.

Posted by EnglishCricket on (July 20, 2013, 8:49 GMT)

Good pitches make good matches but who said ODIs were dead? yeah right!!!. Glad I just about watched the last bit of the match, hardly get to see such thrillers these days. West Indies were the poorer team yet again against Pakistan. Both teams batting to be honest is terrible. The problem with West Indies is that there is not enough 'specialist' batsman in their line-up hence why they are struggling. No disrespect to Dwayne and Pollard but there's really no need to have them along with Sammy in the same 11 because neither of them are specialist batsman and have very similar roles. 1 is enough. Pollard has played 84 ODI matches already and has a batting average below 25 and bowling average of 37 and is just not good enough I'm afraid. Instead West Indies need to go for 1 or 2 specialist batsman if they want to score more runs.

No doubt, after all the hard work, Pakistan lost the match. Field placement/bowling changes in the death overs (of W.I. inning) were appalling as Misbah & Co. panicked gifting away crucial runs. Nevertheless a cracking performance by West Indian tail enders, probably fruits of T20 version. Both sides are evenly balanced, unpredictable on day along with brittle batting. The final result clearly showed why ICC need to give more powers to the third/t.v. umpire ( that 1 short run given erroneously by umpire should have been overturned ).

Misbah Is a very good batsman but he is a worst captain. he doent know about game plan. like yesterday match he used wahab riaz so much instead of afridi and hafeez . i dnt know how he thinks . he made so many bad decisions . he should resigns BUT REMEBER HE Z A GREAT ASSET OF PAKISTAN AND LEADING RUN SCORERE OF 2013.

WOW, What a match for West Indies team! Now, regarding PAK team. Where are Afridi's fans now? I remember couple of day's back you guys were talking about "don't blame Afridi", why not? He has not done anything for the team. Hafeez needs to stop being professor and start playing real cricket. I would say match tied because of U.Akmal, he did not even try to collect the return from Junaid. The real problem is not talent or technique but it is unity (everyone tries to be a captain and gives advice to the bowler, poor Wahab riaz), everyone takes their place granted in the team. Hafeez, U.Akmal, Shehzad thinks they are next big thing in the world cricket but in reality it's a long way to go…… What an inning from Lendl Simmons.

inning devolopers became match throwers. is it akmal willing akmal brothers in team, n road is bad luck for pakistan. he hits runs but as bowler was hit massively too. 5 socket against india wc semi but defeat. good hitting in sa series but again massively beaten in death overs. saw in this 2nd odi that he learnt yorker frm asad. ali when got beaten by. tail batsmen.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 7:10 GMT)

I dont understand why Dwyane Bravo comes ahead of Pollard?? Dwyane Bravo is a bowling all-rounder and he is not technically par to come as a upper middle order batsman. I hope WICB will put a check on his batting order. He was the main reason for the downfall in yesterday's game. Orelse windies could have won it with 3 or 4 overs remaining. And coming to Marlon Samuels.. he doesnt even deserve the place in the team as a Batsman. I dont care his numbers.. look at his approach. He is no where in the form to match an international player.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 7:09 GMT)

i dont get it, mibah's run rate. openers which are termed as good and talented hitter by many were too slow. and i dont think misbah or any other's slow run rate was the factor for afridi's wicket. he should have been under no pressure. pak was batting 1st any runs would have done for him. when he came 33 balls were remaining and lets not forget whab riaz & umar akmal scored 40 + in 24 balls after afridi's wicket. afridi could have scored more had he played sensibly.

even after that 39 off 3 overs and specially 15 off last , and a regular bowler bowling should have been the game but wahab was poor as always. all balls he bowled were asking to hit,. and on top of that umar missed a run out and match.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 7:03 GMT)

well 1 run given short may have been critical but even after that 15 in last over should have been pakistan's game. wahab bowled poorly in that over. and on last ball umar akmal was freezed and missed a run out.

Its funny to see some criticizing misbah. & even saying that afridi's faliure in this match is because of misbah. mibah scored 75 of 111 balls. what about ahmed shehzad 17 off 43, termed very talented nasir ,, and hafeez. they got out to pull shots.

hafeez should bat at 6 or drop . he needs some rest/drop to get back. or play at 6

Afridi failed in this game again. scores doesnt matter its the manner in which he played in 2nd & 3rd match which is more worrying. looking totally uncomfortable. Misbah might have scored slow but there shouldnt be any pressure on afridi for that. he came when 33 balls left . could score any. whab & akmal scored 50+ in 4 overs after afridi's wicket. afridi could have scored more. pak was batting 1st so there shouldnt be no pressure on lower order

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 7:02 GMT)

Chris Gayle reminds me of Lasitha Malimga of Sri Lanka. Their best performances are at IPL. $$$$$$$$$$

Posted by Ray24 on (July 20, 2013, 6:57 GMT)

Misbah is consistently lowering the run rate and that leaves too much pressure on the lower order. Hafeez has been disappointing with the bat for so many games - if it is his bowling that keeps him in, then he should be playing lower down the order and Akmal higher. Misbah should bat only when 3 wickets are down and doomsday is lurking - otherwise he should send others in front to keep the scoreboard ticking. Afridi had an ordinary day, but being your best bowler two games in a row is very good performance. And off course the 70 odd winning runs. About time, the 10 other players justify their places ahead of Afiridi and stop making him a scapegoat. Pathetic last over from Riaz - mid-off up and bowling left arm over.

Pak will keep on loosing if Wahab Riaz remains in the team, he make sure to leak too many runs in his 8th, 9th and 10th over. How come this guy finds a place in the team, he has no clue on how to bowled to number 10th batsman. after this performance if he still manages to keep his place than Pak surely deserve to loose.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 5:43 GMT)

Batting Status of the Pakistan Team is Poor from the start. They always lacking into filed of Batting.

Pakistan Team always rely upon Bowling. Bowling attack is the strength of Pakistan Team. No doubt currently Pakistan containing the Worlds renowned bowling attack. All the bowlers are Worlds Top Ranked Bowlers except Wahab Riaz.

Pakistan Bowling attack only lacking a one bowler and missing the replacement of Wahab Riaz. He can be a Good bowler after getting consistent control over Line & Length, bcoz he is so poor in Line & Length control. He just throw the ball without surety where it should be pitched.

Asad Ali might be better option then Wahab Riaz. He might perform well in a 50% time as compare chances given to Wahab Riaz.

Still Pakistan team can play with the following Five Bowlers and having the space to adjust one more Batsman or All Round Performer.

1. Muhammad Irfan (90% Trust) 2. Junaid Khan (95%) 3. Saeed Ajmal (99%) 4. Shahid Khan Afridi (85%) 5. Muhammad Hafeez (80%)

Posted by alarky on (July 20, 2013, 5:42 GMT)

This is the most appropriate outcome of the match - an exciting tie. I have never seen two teams so evenly matched before. Both consist of 11 bowlers and or fieldsmen - no batsmen. These two teams have the weakest batting among the traditional 8 teams; and par bowling line ups too. Hence, the correct results in the series so far: 1 win each and a tie.

Posted by   on (July 20, 2013, 5:38 GMT)

Its amazing that Afridi bowled only 4 overs in this match (a bowler whoes economy rate in last 2 matches was less than 3).. He just had a single bad over and then Misbah took him off. Thats the main reason why Misbah was left with Wahab Riaz at the end.

Posted by hamqad on (July 20, 2013, 5:36 GMT)

It also funny that no one is pointing to the fact that Pakistan would have probably won had we played a full time keeper. Holder was out by a mile. i have said that a number of times: you have a promising keeper in the ranks, play him. please. lets move on from the tried, tested and failed tactic of employing Umar Akmal as keeper. He is not even the best keeper in his household, let alone his country. And I thank the management for finally!! finally!! bringing Haris Sohail in. Lets stick with him for a few games, please!

Posted by Resultpredictor on (July 20, 2013, 5:27 GMT)

The interesting facts about Pakistan team: 1. A genuine bowler cannot defend 15 runs in last over against a tailender batsman. 2. This Pakistan team cannot win series against best teams in the world. Pakistan cannot even win against Ireland. Pakistan can win only against Scotland and Afghanistan. 3.This Pakistan side can win matches only on Asian pitches not outside Asia. Pakistan lost all series against any team outside Asia. 4. Even Bangladesh won series against WI, but Pak cannot win. MARK MY WORDS Pakistan are going to lose this series 3-1. This shows that at present moment Pakistan team is worse than Bangladesh. If Pakistan plays like this then it will be below Bangladesh in ODI rankings within a year. 5. And last but not the least the great Afridi can play great innings only once in a year in recent times. He continues to fail in remaining matches. This is the sorry tale of Present Pakistan cricket team.

Ahmed shehzad 17 of 48 for god sake its not good for even a test match,,,,professor needs a break for life time because he is starting to be consistent with his poor batting and strike rate.We cant blame lower order batsman like akmal and afridi if they dont perform because its the openers who consume lot of overs without scoring.Good to see Haris sohail in the squad.I hope pakistan gives rest to hafeez in next match and play with some new talent instead.

It's time the Pakistanis come to really specially in the team and strategy. Junaid Khan should be included in all matches. Secondly Umal Akmal shoud bat in place of Misbah-Ul-Haq. I find it strange that the management cannot see this. Let's hope they come to reality in the next match.

Posted by Kak-mal_Khan on (July 20, 2013, 4:51 GMT)

OK lets look at it this way for Pak fans who don't understand the role Misbah plays, If you were the the opposition team or captain, who is the key wicket in the Pak side. Misbah comes top of the list, why?? because he will hardly ever gift his wicket. He puts a price on his wicket, if you want it you come and get it attitude. This is vital for the role he is playing - as opposition I would want him out immediately, the other batsmen will give their wickets after a quick 20-30 runs, hardly ever scoring 50 or beyond, that's fine by me, my bowlers will always have that spring in their step because wickets are coming regularly, but not when Misbah is there, they will get despondent and start trying new things, eventually reversing match situation into Pakistan favour. Nail him early the rest are there for the taking, obviously the odd innings from Hafeez or Afridi which comes once every 10 games can lose us the game, but during the series the big shark is always Misbah followed by Akmal!

Posted by somethingdifferent on (July 20, 2013, 4:49 GMT)

I suggest someone should do a thorough research on the family tree of Wahab Riaz. He would turn out to be related to Barak Obama. Other wise there is no logic in continuously playing such an expensive bowler like him. A specialist bowler who gives away 15 runs to number 11 in the last over does not deserve to be selected for limited over matches ever again. If he ever plays again something is definitely going on behind the scene. Cricinfo plz print.

Pakistan needs solidity in the middle order, but not at the cost of strike rate. Thrilling match nonetheless. Nice to see Chennai Super King new boy Holder shining.

Guys, I am really not sure how many of you watched Pakistan batting before commenting them as the most boring side. You should note that the opposition team(Home Team) also struggled on these pitches. Even the recently concluded Tri-Series batting strike rates are also not great.(except 1 or 2 pitches) This information should give you enough reasons to stop blaming PAK batsmen alone.

Posted by LionsofLanka on (July 20, 2013, 4:33 GMT)

Every time I was forced to listen comparison of Sri Lanka bowling with PAK. They calling WI batting worst. When WI made some runs against Sri Lanka, they called Lankans bowling mediocre. They called if PAK was there instead of Lanka, Irfan, Junaid, Ajmal & Wahab would bowled them in less 100. Last 2 one days proved every thing. If batting second side scores 229 on terrible WI pitch, it sounds like 325. Last night WI tailenders scored 89 runs of last 10 overs. 38 runs scored in last 3 overs by WI batsmen no. 9, 10 & 11. Oh My God, against Ajmal, Junaid & Wahab Riaz. Lions would definitely chased 230 in 28 to 32 overs with 9 wickets in hands.

Posted by surajparajuli on (July 20, 2013, 4:13 GMT)

I think pakistani fans would blame the umpires for giving a run short to Umar Akmal while he was batting, although it was not. I think the West Indian umpires are preety poor on decision making. How can you call a run short when u r not sure at all. I have seen one horrible decision by a west indian umpire against Zimbawe, when he gave not out to a run out of Ramnaresh Sarwan, instead of reviewing with third umpire, but actually he was way short of the crease. I am telling this all because i lost a bet of Nrs. 35000 yesterday.

it was not surprising bcoz narine is a good hitter and he showed his batting capability once more. But holder's assault is more surprising, i think he learns how to bat at death from dhoni in ipl. Good cameo by holder.

Gayle performing well in IPL but fail in International level explains the difference between Domestic cricket and International cricket, just cause your one batsman trashing all the 2nd level bowlers doesn't make you a dangerous batsman at the international level. So after all Holder is also a good finisher same Like Dhoni.

Shiv Chanderpaul's scores in his last 11 ODI innings: 44*, 35, 4, 31, 3, 13*, 67, 66, 24, 0, 101. Total 388 runs at an average of 43.11 including one century, two 50s, one zero, 2 not outs.

K Pollard's scores in his last 11 ODI innings: 0, 30, 3, 0, 0, 4, 0, 28, 22, 30, 0. Total 117 runs at an average of 10.63 including no century, no 50s, 5 zeros, no not outs.

Shiv never retired from ODI. He has not been selected since WC 2011 because of WI politics and Opiss Gibson's lack of vision, poor coaching skills, and no people skills.

K Pollard is still playing because of WICB and Opiss Gibson's lack of vision for WI cricket.

with a great bowling attack pakistan need to have good batsman to become a good team, dont know who taught two explosive opners to score at snails pace and put the rest of the batsman under immense pressure, umer akmal should be sent up the order

Pakistan team is getting weaker and weaker under the leadership of Misbah.A silly mistake by Umar Akmal cost the match. An specialist wicketkeeper is needed to be selected for the next match.

Pakistani team needs to have serious captain and coach it seems the current strategy cant get them a victory over rookie teams. ...

Posted by android_user on (July 19, 2013, 23:36 GMT)

It was stunning. ..but still windies are short of an anchor batsman who can keep ticking the score. .WICB must be missing Chanderpaul big time. ..but their arrogance is more superior. ..they will bite the dust. ..at one point. ...can't expect the tailenders to bat everyday

In the end neither team won proving that both are fairly matched.

well don w I we will rally with u vw I n loos or draw

Posted by android_user on (July 19, 2013, 22:21 GMT)

Pakistan won this match by 1 run if it wasn't for the umpires mistake of deducting Umar Akmal one run when the replays showed clearly he had made his ground. Apart drom that it was Wahab who let us down with yet again shoddy bowling. Well played to west indies though.

Last 5 over rain d game from Pakistan

No positive cricket from Pakistan N get regular wicket keeper.

umpiring has been poor in this tournament. that one run given short lost the march for pakistan. i dont know what was the umpire was thinking at that time. also i am not happy with wahab riaz. he is not performing well for a while. he should be dropped. also misbah gave that last over to a non performing bowler so it was due. but dont fade pak fans. still you have two more matches to won for.

I fall in to sleep watching Misbah bating Hafiz as well every bats man of Pak fall in love with Their Cap following Misbahs foot step? Every one wasted bowl?

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 19, 2013, 21:33 GMT)

Three reasons for Pakistan not to win. 1. Poor fielding, how on earth keeper failed to gather the last throw or wahab failing to pick the sunil's 4. 2. Poor last over bowling, no change of pace or poor line and length. 3. Poor captaincy, last over against tailenders Hafeez or afridi (a spiner) was better choice.

Thanks to WI umpire for chopping a run by misjudging Umar Akmal's correct run as short run. That one run made a difference.

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (July 19, 2013, 21:22 GMT)

It's all about Misbah Mr. Dot it could've been more runs if he would've use those dot bowls? Hafiz also wrested too many bowls so as opener's? Dot, dot, dot but bowlers did their job good bowling performance?

West Indies should get over the line

chris gayle seems to reserve his energies only for IPL.. really amazing how hia dorm can dip pre and post IPL

it's funny that nobody is complaining about Ahmed shahzad's strike rate of 38, Hafeez's strike rate of 47, and Afridi's strike rate of 20. Misbah's mistake is that he actually scored some runs.

realy a boring batting by pakistani batsmen. looks they are playing a test match not a one day

Posted by android_user on (July 19, 2013, 15:40 GMT)

a man aged 40 is expected to play like 40 not 20

Posted by android_user on (July 19, 2013, 15:06 GMT)

I am watching the most boring Pakistani team of my life. They are going at a scoring rate as if its a 10-day Test match. It has been for quite few years now.

Posted by android_user on (July 19, 2013, 14:56 GMT)

everytime I see the scores and the overs bowled when pak is batting such a disappointment it's like a boring slow test match where the team knows there is no result

Posted by android_user on (July 19, 2013, 14:10 GMT)

pakistan the most boreing side at the moment where is the new talent always pick the same players who have failed over and over again and when they play they do not have any strategy as to what the game plan is

This is the team I have been wanted from day 1 since Pakistan arrived in West Indies. Good luck Pakistan. Our batsmen need to come back in form soon before we hit the bottom of the ranking.

I guess gud to gve a chance to harris sohail hope he cashes the apportunity umae akmal sd b sent early he is waste down n importantly they should hve gud runnin b/w the wickets means rotatin the strilke so naturally atleast 4 n over in the end will help them shoot in last 15 overs
