New Zealand took the series, but it was a close-run thing. A shower interrupted their chase for an hour in the 36th over, with the score 210 for five, and when play resumed the revised target demanded another 53 from 45 balls. Six were still needed from the final over and, although Santner immediately drove Wahab Riaz for four, the tension was ratcheted up by two dot balls, before he finally threaded a pull through midwicket. Earlier Guptill and Williamson - both eventually defeated by Azhar Ali's rusty leg-spin - had put on 159 for the second wicket, beating the New Zealand record of 157 by Guptill and Brendon McCullum against Zimbabwe at Harare in October 2011. Here McCullum, returning after resting his back, was out first ball. Pakistan's total had also featured one big partnership, Mohammad Hafeez and Babar Azam (with a career-best 83) adding 134 for the third wicket. But the lively Milne mopped up three wickets in seven balls, while nine catches were taken in all, four by Guptill, which equalled the national record for a fielder.
