†INDIA v ENGLAND 1981-82

At Jullundur, December 20. India won by six wickets. Vengsarkar's lovely driving, mostly through the covers, took India to their first victory over England in five limited-overs contests since 1974. Yet the touring side fought hard to preserve their record, and defending a low score they required India to make 8 off the final seven deliveries. However, Yashpal clubbed Botham straight for 6, leaving Vengsarkar the deserved honour of finishing the match with the last of many 4s past extra-cover. Earlier, a stand of 110 in seventeen overs between Gower and Gatting, who drove Shastri for four 6s in one over, produced England's only batting of quality. A full house of 25,000 watched the game, but Jullundur in mid-winter was an unfortunate venue for a 50-overs contest: morning mist reduced the match to 36 overs a side, and the end came in an eerie half-light at 5.17, only minutes before sunset.

Man of the Match: D. B. Vengsarkar.
