Third One-day International

†NEW ZEALAND v ENGLAND 1982-83

At Christchurch, February 26. New Zealand won by 84 runs. England suffered their ninth defeat in thirteen matches since the protracted one-day programme began in Melbourne on January 9. The result gave New Zealand a clean sweep in their short series with England and confirmed the low state to which the England side had sunk. New Zealand, winning the toss and taking first use of a poor pitch, were given another good start by Turner and Edgar, and when, after a middle-order collapse, they were short of runs Morrison and Snedden rallied them. The only English batsmen not to fail were Lamb and Gower, who added 86 for the third wicket and ended the tour as they had started it - by overshadowing England's other batsmen. Although Gower was unsettled by field invasions, the predominant reason for England's defeat was their poor and colourless cricket.

Man of the Match: M. C. Snedden. Attendance: 31,750, a record for Lancaster Park.
