At Berbice, Guyana, March 29. India won by 27 runs, achieving the highest total ever recorded against West Indies in a limited-overs international at a rate of 5.4 an over. Gavaskar, in his first innings of note on the tour, and Shastri led the way by contributing 93 at 5 an over, but Kapil Dev provided the real momentum by lashing three 6s and seven 4s off 38 deliveries. The West Indian bowling and fielding were unusually slack, and the early loss of Greenidge, Haynes and Lloyd virtually sealed the match in India's favour. A crowd of 15,000 watched the match in the heart of Guyana's sugar area.
