†WEST INDIES v AUSTRALIA 1983-84

At Albion, Guyana, February 29. West Indies won by eight wickets. After a promising start the Australians were restricted by the off-spin of Richards and Gomes, who both bowled their full allotment of overs, taking four wickets between them for 72 runs. Jones's quick, undefeated 43 at the end was not enough to give the Australians a worthwhile total on a perfect pitch and fast outfield, as Haynes, with fourteen 4s from 147 deliveries, demonstrated, leading West Indies to a commanding victory in partnership with Richardson, with whom he added 166. A packed crowd, estimated at 14,000, attended, and the main scoreboard crashed to the ground under the weight of spectators using it as a vantage point early in the match. Almost miraculously, no-one was seriously hurt.

Man of the Match: D. L. Haynes.
