†AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1985-86

At Sydney, January 14 (day/night). Australia won by four wickets. Sent in on a seaming pitch, far too lively for a one-day match, New Zealand were 25 for two after fifteen overs and 53 for four at the halfway point as the batsmen had to try to survive, rather than attack. Coney (58 from 86 balls) and Hadlee (21 from 24) provided the main resistance in a seventh-wicket stand.

New Zealand fought back to have Australia 87 for four in the 29th over, only to drop Ritchie in the 30th when he was 25. He battled on to 68 with victory within touching distance, and Australia won with almost five overs to spare.

Man of the Match: D. R. Gilbert. Attendance: 36,170.
