†AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN 1986-87

At Perth, January 2 (day/night). Pakistan won by one wicket. Toss: Australia. After being outplayed almost throughout the match, Pakistan snatched a seemingly impossible victory when Saleem Jaffer scooped Waugh for 2 over a close-set field off the last but one ball. Jones, making 121 (113 balls, two sixes, nine fours), his second hundred on successive days, and Waugh (82 off 102) added 173 for Australia's fourth wicket, a record in one-day internationals, and Australia looked unbeatable when Pakistan were 129 for six in the 30th over. But successive stands of 52, 43 and 43, in which Asif Mujtaba - a slightly built twenty-year-old left-arm spinner - was the common denominator, brought Pakistan to the final over needing only 7 to win, 39 runs having been plundered off the previous four. Wasim Akram was caught at deepish mid-off off the first ball, but Asif and Saleem Jaffer completed a humiliating half-hour for Australia, and a memorable one for Pakistan, by taking 1, 1, 3, 2 off the next four. Asif faced 56 balls, Manzoor Elahi 44 and Salim Yousuf 27.

Man of the Match: D. M. Jones. Attendance: 17,144.
