†AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN 1988-89

At Brisbane, January 8. Australia won by five wickets. Toss: Pakistan. Any advantage that could have come to Pakistan through winning the toss was immediately nullified when, with the first two balls of the match, Alderman bowled Ramiz and Aamer Malik. The hard-earned recovery which followed - the work of Shoaib, playing his first game of the series, Miandad and Ijaz - had taken Pakistan to 124 for three with fifteen overs left when that, too, was reversed by the running out of Miandad, sent back by Ijaz. Miandad's 26th run was his 5,000th in one-day internationals, well over 2,000 more than the next Pakistani. By the 44th of their 50 overs Pakistan were 173 for eight, and the 204 which they eventually set Australia, on an easy pitch, was nothing like enough when Boon and Marsh put on 100 for the first wicket in 22.3 overs. McDermott, promoted to No. 3 to boost Australia's scoring-rate, hit 32 from 36 balls, and they won with five overs to spare. The gates were closed before play began, though the crowd was not a record.

Man of the Match: T. M. Alderman. Attendance: 20,386.
