Seventh One-Day International

At Port Elizabeth, January 21. South Africa won by 64 runs. Toss: South Africa. International debut: S. J. Palframan.

South Africa completed a 6-1 series victory with a win which illustrated England's collective loss of batting form. Facing a modest total, this time on a good pitch, and with Donald still resting, they were never in touch. Led by De Villiers and Symcox, South Africa bowled with their usual commendable discipline. Cronje and Hudson had given them the ideal launch pad for a large score, but Gough - on a hat-trick in his last over and once again England's outstanding bowler - and White pegged them back and they made just 49 in their last ten overs. It required 61 in 65 balls from Kuiper, much of it with a runner after he strained a hamstring in his only game of the series, to get them to 218. This eventually proved more than enough.

Man of the Match: A. P. Kuiper. Man of the Series: S. M. Pollock. Attendance: 17,300.
