First Test Match

South Africa v England, 1888-89

The first of the two eleven-a-side matches that were played, and a victory for the Englishmen by eight wickets. Good all-round cricket, rather than any specially noteworthy individual achievement, brought around this gratifying result. Mr. Smith, however had a capital bowling average in the first innings of South Africa. Abel, as on many other occasions, made the best score for his side.
