40-over Match

New Zealand v Pakistan 1972-73

At Christchurch, February 11. New Zealand won by 22 runs. If Pakistan had enjoyed some luck at Dunedin with the toss, they were unfortunate in this limited-over fixture which attracted 12,000 to Lancaster Park. When Pakistan batted the light was poor but the rules did not allow for stoppage because of bad light and the game ended in Stygian gloom and light rain. Wadsworth again batted well but Burgess was the mainstay of the New Zealand batting. A gifted player, he gave a delightfuul display. Near the end, R. J. Hadlee scored 21 from 23 balls. Sadiq and Mushtaq batted well and there was spirited resistance from the tail-enders, but Pakistan could not cope with the light, and the aggressive bowling of D. R. Hadlee. New Zealand 187 (M. G. Burgess 47, K. J. Wadsworth 30; Sarfaz 4/46); Pakistan 165 (Sadiq 37; D. R. Hadlee 4/34)
