After their four-day trimuph over Sri Lanka in the Asian Test Championship final, Pakistan crushed Bangladesh in a hastily arranged one-day international at the same venue. The match was far from more popular with the locals than the Test, attracting about 30,00 spectators. But the outcome foreshadowed the results of the two triangular tournaments which opened three days later; Pakistan were to coast home against India and Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh lost all their matches against Zimbabwe and Kenya.
