Fifth One-Day International

South Africa v West Indies

Tony Cozier and John Ward

At Johannesburg, February 4, 2004 (day/night). South Africa won by four wickets. Toss: West Indies.

A capacity crowd was richly entertained by another batsmen's match which featured 614 runs and a last-over victory clinching the series 3-1 for South Africa. Both teams made their highest one-day scores against each other. Gayle and Chanderpaul laid the foundations with 193 in 39 overs, West Indies' second-biggest opening stand, and Powell's 24-ball 49 meant the last ten overs yielded 104. Gayle finished unbeaten on 152 off 153 balls, his eighth one-day international hundred, with three sixes and 12 fours. Once again, Kallis was at the heart of South Africa's pursuit. But he was out in the penultimate over from Rampaul, which yielded a solitary run, so eight were needed from the last, bowled by Gayle. Pollock benefited from misfields and, with the scores level, hoisted the fourth ball for six.

Man of the Match: J. H. Kallis. Attendance: 28,091. Man of the Series: J. H. Kallis.
