Tenth match

VB Series

Soumya Bhattacharya

At Melbourne, January 29, 2004 (day/night). No result. Australia 3 pts, Zimbabwe 3 pts. Toss: Zimbabwe. One-day international debut: N. B. Mahwire.

Persistent rain ruined this match but, with the finalists long since decided, it scarcely mattered. The weather did allow time for the Australian innings - and also gave Zimbabwe as many points as in their past six games combined. Bevan, still suffering from the broken rib that would rule him out of the rest of the series, produced another rescue act with a run-a-ball 56, while Martyn - under pressure after a string of poor scores - showed a glimmer of his true ability in a stroke- filled 42. Next day he also showed that the pressure might have been getting to him: leaving the team hotel he made an offensive gesture to a TV cameraman, earning him a reprimand from Ponting.

Attendance: 15,218.
