At East London, May 4, 2009 (floodlit). Chennai Super Kings won by 78 runs. Toss: Chennai Super Kings. Chennai Super Kings 178-3 (20 overs) (M. Vijay 31, M. L. Hayden 43, M. S. Dhoni 58*, S. K. Raina 32); Deccan Chargers 100 (14.4 overs) (D. R. Smith 49; S. B. Jakati 4-22). Chennai Super Kings 2 pts. Man of the Match: M. S. Dhoni.

Some ruthless power-hitting from Hayden (26 balls), Dhoni (37) and Raina (19) set up an imposing target, which the Chargers never threatened after the early departures of Gilchrist, Gibbs and Laxman for ducks. Dwayne Smith blasted five sixes in his 49 from 23 balls, but the other batsmen struggled against Shadab Jakati, who took his second four-for in only his third IPL match (he didn't bowl in the first one), as Chennai went top of the table.
