Wisden

2013

The 150th Wisden celebrated its sesquicentennial edition in style, with an extra range of articles looking back to its inception in 1864, and also nominating ten "Wisden Moments in Time" which changed the face of cricket, ranging from WG Grace modernising batting in 1871, through Bodyline and Packer, to the first IPL auction. There was also the traditional annual selection of thoughtful articles, including one by Mike Atherton on the vexed subject of "talent", and an atmospheric account of possibly the fastest spell of bowling ever, by Jeff Thomson in a club match in Sydney when he was upset at being left out of the New South Wales side. Turning to the previous year's cricket, South Africa's success in winning their series in England - and replacing them atop the Test rankings - was reflected in three of their successful side (Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn) being named among the Five Cricketers of the Year, alongside Nick Compton and Marlon Samuels. The Australian captain Michael Clarke, who scored a record four Test double-centuries during 2012, was the Leading Cricketer in the World. Other highlights included details of the man who collected medals for winning both divisions of the County Championship, a young player who was out to successive balls on successive days 7,500 miles apart, and Abdur Rehman's feat of playing in a match in Sharjah and one in Sussex on the same day.
