Hong Kong v Nepal, World T20, Group A, Chittagong March 16, 2014

Nepal lay their marker with 80-run win

174

Nepal 149 for 8 (Malla 48, Haseeb 3-25) beat Hong Kong 69 (Gauchan 3-9, Regmi 3-14) by 80 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

For the first time in five years, an Associate nation has won a game at the World T20. Okay, so that was a given, as Hong Kong and Nepal contested the maiden encounter between two second-tier sides in the tournament's history, but Nepal's achievement, on their World T20 debut, was no less memorable for that.

Paras Khadka, Nepal's statesmanlike captain and the man who has been so visible in their remarkable rise through the echelons of world cricket, struck a belligerent 41 and Gyanendra Malla 48 to set up a resounding 80-run win. Hong Kong, bristling with confidence before the game, crumbled in pursuit of 150, dismissed with three overs left unbowled as only three batsmen made double figures. Playing in front of the TV cameras, if not a packed-out stadium, perhaps exacerbated their nerves.

Having worked hard to get back into the match after an 80-run stand between Khadka and Malla, Hong Kong slipped quickly back into the red by losing two wickets in the first two overs. Babar Hayat and Waqas Barkat got through the Powerplay before Shakti Gauchan claimed the first of his three wickets and when Mark Chapman was bowled by Basant Regmi - the first of two in two balls for Nepal's slow left-armer - it precipitated a calamitous collapse.

Gauchan struck twice in the next over, rattling the stumps for the fourth time in a row, and charged off with his arm pointing to the sky in celebration. This was a night on which Nepal's passion for cricket was given rich reward.

Khadka had said before the match that the challenge would be for his players to control their emotions and not let the excitement of playing at a global ICC tournament for the first time overwhelm them. That a number of full-blooded mows were dropped - Hong Kong put down at least three clear chances - or did not go to hand suggests they were only partially successful in that aim but their vim was much appreciated by a partisan crowd, the vocal majority of which seemed to be Nepali.

It was at the 2009 tournament, when Ireland overcame Bangladesh, that an Associate last experienced victory at the ICC's global T20 showpiece. Hong Kong had hinted at their own giant-killing credentials during warm-up wins over Zimbabwe and Netherlands but here was a foe of similar proportions - and one that had beaten them twice previously, including at the World T20 Qualifier last year when Nepal clinched their place in Bangladesh.

Jamie Atkinson, who won the toss, inserted Nepal, hoping for his bowlers to inflict psychological blows on a team bowled out for 95 by UAE earlier in the week. The possibility of dew making the ball harder to grip later in the evening may also have played a part in his thinking but, by then, there was no chance of Nepal letting go.

With chants of "Nepal! Nepal!" ringing out from one side of the ground and the fielding restrictions in place, openers Subash Khakurel and Sagar Pun began making merry. Khakurel on-drove the first boundary of the match from the fifth ball and Pun then tucked into Najeeb Amar's first over, twice lofting the spinner down the ground.

Having changed ends, former Pakistan U-19 seamer Haseeb Amjad had Pun caught at extra cover, again attempting to carve the ball to the boundary, ending a stand of 36 in the fifth over. Khakurel followed three deliveries later, trying and failing to clear the ring at mid-on, giving Hong Kong's attack something of a handle on proceedings for the first time.

A lull ensued, as seamers Aizaz Khan and Irfan Ahmed bowled with discipline, but Khadka struck the first boundary in five overs when the left-armer Najeeb returned. Next delivery, Khadka chipped the ball down straight down the throat of long-on only for Tanwir Afzal to drop a clanger. The 42-year-old Najeeb, who came out of retirement for this tournament, must have been wondering whether this was the sort of TV exposure he had been promised.

"Paras Khadka, chhaka padka" [Paras Khadka, hit a six] implored the Nepal support and this was the only facet of their evening in which they were to be disappointed. On social media, pictures were posted of crowds gathered in front of specially erected big screens in towns and cities in Nepal. Much has been made of this World T20 extending cricket's global reach; in Khadka, who later took a wicket with his first ball, Nepal has an impressive ambassador.

Having been 60 for 2 at halfway, Khadka and Malla accelerated through the gears. They had added a further 56 in 37 balls before Khadka was eventually caught in the deep, off Najeeb, having been given a third life the ball before, and Najeeb missed another skier, this time off Malla, from his own bowling later in the same over.

Malla continued to play steadily and at the start of the final over crashed a six over long-on - the only one of the match - to take him to within sight of fifty. But two balls later, on 48, he top-edged a pull back to the bowler, Haseeb, who managed to keep Nepal below 150 by taking two wickets, to go with two run-outs, from his final four deliveries. That dramatic end suggested at a change in momentum but Nepal's scriptwriter, as ever, knew better.

Thanks to all the cricket lovers around world who loved our (Nepal) cricket. We want to be recognized by world and we have potentials to upset any team the only thing we need is exposure. thank you.

Congratulations and thanks to the Nepali cricket team and the coach and other staffs. We are very proud of our team and specially the captain Paras Khadka. We, fans will always be with you no matter you win or loose. It was a five star performance, absolutely enjoyed it. We should go into the next match against Bangladesh with an objective to create a upset for them. If we play positively like we did today, it is very much possible. Good luck.

Also thanks to all other commentates and readers from around the world who watched Nepal;s match and praised our boys performance. Ofcourse we are not as good as other teams likes Bangla, Pakis, India or SLanka, but we are heading on a right direction. Hopefully we will get better and get to play against you guys too by the next decade.

    Cheers !! :)

All my life I had other teams to support at big stages like world cups, etc. This was for the very first time when we could support and cheer for our own country which represented the Himalayan Kingdom at T20 world cup. The emotional outbreaks with every single run and every single fall of wicket was paramount. As a Nepalese national I am very proud of our team. This is just the beginning, but with proper nurture and inputs from ICC ,Our team can soon acquire the ODI status. Our domestic structure needs to be revamped and we need to have 3-4 day matches being played more regularly. This will provide players with more patience and maturity as the need of a proper domestic league cannot be denied by any.I understand there is a long way to go but at this moment we Nepalese are enjoying this victory and I am thanking Nepalese National team for this wonderful gift on the day of Holi, festival of colors. The victory has added the most beautiful shade to it.All the best against BD and Afgans !!

I think with teams like Afghanistan and Nepal that have a large passion and a fan following for cricket like they do (and more importantly local players rather than Expats), that their growth must be tried to be accelerated by influential cricket boards. They need to play more competitive cricket with domestic teams of major cricket-playing nations to build experience and also more international matches, even if virtually against their 'A' teams. Also, offer them experienced players as their coaches, players like Amol Muzumdar for example who has been a stalwart in Indian domestic cricket or the likes from other countries.

Really impressed with Nepal, Gyanendra Malla and Paras Khadka look like proper batsmen, Sompal Kami has some very good pace for an 18 year old (one delivery was clocked at 84 mph) and Shakti Gauchan and Basant Regmi are a couple of quality left-arm spinners. Paras Khadka is also a very impressive figure as captain and they have amazingly enthusiastic fans no matter where in the world they play. Hopefully the 4 Asian test nations can send their A teams to Nepal or invite them to play in their domestic leagues over the next few years. An invite to the next Asia Cup would be great for them too. Nepal definitely has the chance to be 'the next Afghanistan', good luck v Bangladesh guys.

Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi fans, thanks for your inspiring words towards Nepali cricket. But do not annoy each other as existence of each team plays kinda role in making history profile of another. Tomorrow Nepal is playing against B'desh, which will be a good exposure and a chance for learning to Nepalese team. Win by B'desh will just be an added 3 points to them as deserved by them whereas win by Nepal will be a miracle and a history.

Good Win by NEPAL...and also looking at the Fan Following looks like Cricket is making Great Progress in the Country...but unfortunately they get only once in 4 years opportunity to play at big event only.. Nepal were good but not upto international standards...they can only be international if they get to tour other countries and play against the current test playing nations. More international matches for them will improve their game and give them the confidence to make a mark..The problem is test playing nations do not want to play them because of lower revenue.. I mean keep a match between India and Nepal somewhere in Guwhati or Kolkate where it is easier for the fans to travel and enjoy the game..its high time now we expand cricket

Nepalese cricket team is 100% nepalese cricket team, with sri-lankan coach. After a very poor world cup Q in NZ and after a disspointing warm-up match with UAE and Ireland i thought there isn't a moment to smile and thought we wouldn't win a single match. After beating HK with a huge margin and toping a group already, i am dreaming Nepal going to the super 10.But we need to win 2 game.If we bat well our bowlers could do some damage with the friendly pitch.Next game is with BD and we need to perform really well coz they are a really good team. i don kno why people called them minnow team.At least we need to Beat AFG to at least get close to the nest round.I hope sagar pun could score above 25 runs,Malla could keep his consistency,Parash does the all round, Binod could do some Chemo, Veswakar chase the total and win the game for us,Regmi to take wickets and keep the run rate tide, Shakti keep the momentum , Kami,Mukhiya,Karn could keep the good pace. good luck Nepali cricket team

  • on March 17, 2014, 1:32 GMT

It was good that HK started this campaign by winning against formidable sides like Netherlands, Ireland n Zimbabwe. Before the start of this match the limelight was on HK unlike Nepal who performed not up to their standards in d warm up matches. Against all odds the so called minnows proved everybody wrong n showed how hard work n dedication pays off in d LONG RUN.... Now unlike HK, its Nepal's turn to get all d PR, global attention, expert feedback n support from fans of test playing nations as Nepal unleashes its exuberance n vigor to win at bigger stage. We make lack d infrastructure, d limelight and d ex-pats but we r never short of passion n belief that has brought us so far n will take further, as its only d beginning of those giant strides we as A Nepali have been aspiring for so long.. Best of luck boys We love n support u no matter what

15yrs ago I thought the next test nation would be Nepal. Somehow Bangladesh jumped past them. Then for ages it looked like Nepal would flounder in cricketing terms. The last few years have been promising. I visited Nepal about 15yrs ago & was amazed at how many kids were playing cricket & thought surely that would have to translate to success sooner or later. Good luck Nepal from an Ozzy.

  • on March 16, 2014, 23:51 GMT

@ Lakshman , it is comical that you are not even a Nepali fan, yet compare them to Bangladesh. Can you please concentrate on your own team, your own business? Only retarded people should keep such wearied hatred against a team. Bangladesh is not your cup of tea, and please respect all teams. Making comparing based on your pointless logic does not make no sense here.

I am comparing , but ask you one thing did you see 2 T-20 matches between BD and SL recently?

Sri Lanka 168/7 (20/20 ov); Bangladesh 166/7 (20/20 ov) Sri Lanka won by 2 runs

Bangladesh 120 (19.5/20 ov); Sri Lanka 123/7 (20/20 ov) Sri Lanka won by 3 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)

So can I say that Bangladesh almost near to SL in T-20?

We know where we are? We respect SL team as well.

So please comment and compare with logic , not with hatred.

@Lakshman weeramantry....How come Nepal is better than Bangladesh? Does Nepal have any win against Test playing countries?Nepal just won against the associate country Hong kong and you are comparing to Bangladesh . That is senseless .

  • Dhumper on March 16, 2014, 21:18 GMT

Looking at their roster, everyone seems to be born Nepalese. I truly support such teams not made up expats because that's when teams like Nepal and Ireland progress from grass root interest. Good luck to my Nepalese friends!

  • ProdigyA on March 16, 2014, 21:14 GMT

Was this Hong Kong XI or Pakistan XI...lol...except one or two guys all of them were Pak, I bet not even one of them could speak Chinese. Very impressed by the Nepal, gave Pak B team a really good trashing. I'm sure they are good enough to give the A team a run for their money. Good luck Nepal..proud of u.

unbelievable stuff from nepali players .....proud on u boys.Hope this momentum will carry tiil the end of the world Cup....

  • on March 16, 2014, 20:06 GMT

i don't understand why bangladesh is playing here. they have full test status. as the host nation, icc has to sort of ensure that bd progress to the next round and that might be fatal to nepal's and other teams' chances. it seems like they are giving bangladesh cricket team more air time for this tournament but this is detrimental to the aspirations of countries like nepal.

  • on March 16, 2014, 20:01 GMT

All Nepal Team needs is to beat Australia!! Bangladesh watch out Gorkhalis are coming!! Afgnaistan was shot out for 72 , we got hong kong for 69!! We are on top of table so all bang bandhus sit tight and watch ur team lose....peace n love to cricket.

  • sumonkhorshed on March 16, 2014, 19:52 GMT

Dear Lakshman, stop talking non sense against Bangladesh.Don't compare Nepal with Bangladesh. They r far far away from bd.How do you feel when any body compare Nepal with Sri lanka & said Nepal will defeat Sri lanka?remember we have very close game against yours & we have defeated you in your soil last year in pallekele & also level ODI Series 1-1.I respect all countries & their sports(including Sri Lanka).but fan like u is totally...What can I say?learn to respect to other countries...Congrats to Nepal for their 1st ever T20I win in their 1st ever T20I(this is also their 1st ever ICC International Official Match).all the best.....

  • Bengali-Tiger007 on March 16, 2014, 19:39 GMT

First of all, a very warm welcome to my Nepalese friends in BD and Congrats to you guys on your thumping win over HK.

Now, why isnt Nepal included in the Asia Cup??? Are they not Asian??? ICC you have been warned, DO NOT DEPRIVE them from their own rights!!!

Its very embarrissing for me to admit that this is the very first time I saw Nepal play and to be very honest, they have impressed me. They are miles ahead of pathetic over hyped Afg team. Mallu could have easily got to his 50, but he gave it away and that was very frustrating to see.

One advice to Nepal fans, show respect and be humble towards other teams/fans and you will be supported with open arms as we all Bangladeshi's have started to like your team. Do not be Arrogant & Fiesty like the Afg as you saw today they have been put in their places and they are hiding now. This is a gentlemens game and lets all keep it that way.

Time to Axe these Afg players out of our leagues & invite better players from Nepal! Gd Luck Nepal

  • on March 16, 2014, 19:36 GMT

Not only players but crowd support should also be praised in Chittagong..a moral booster and gr8 victory..long live Nepal

  • rewan.cric on March 16, 2014, 17:46 GMT

Good article thanks Alan. In fact looking into matches history between HK and Nepal, HK was never hard team for Nepal. Nepal had many easy wins over HK. HK having over confidence is good but keeping them up is need.

In fact nepal needs to get the odi status that helps nepal grow the cricket...

Best of luck Nepal keep continue

  • on March 16, 2014, 17:11 GMT

This is not just another win. This is MASSIVE and this just can be the beginning of whole new era in the history of a nation not much known globally for its sporting exploits. Despite not having even half-of-the facilities and infrastructures that its contemporaries enjoy, Nepal making it to the global event was in itself remarkable but they were not contend with mere qualification. They wanted to register their presence and how well they did. After this grand announcement at the global event, Nepal may not remain the same and it is not an over-statement. Like someone said Hong Kong, for instance, has world class and excellent cricketing facilities with modern, world standard clubs such as Kowloon Cricket Club, all Nepal just has desire.

Also let me bring it to your knowledge that Cricket is not the first preference when it comes to team sports, it's Football... enough to assimilate what this win means then.

  • on March 16, 2014, 17:10 GMT

Congratulations to Nepali Cricket Team on their debut T20 cricket world cup match victory. . .

  • on March 16, 2014, 17:10 GMT

Great job from Nepal, these teams look like polar opposites, don't they? The Nepalese squadron of spinners were extremely accurate and Hong Kong got stuck very quickly against them where other teams may have been able to nurdle their way through. Good to see Malla in the runs for Nepal, he is a big player in their team because when he scores runs they normally do well, when he doesn't Nepal seem to struggle. Regmi, Gauchan, Khadka and Malla all impressive.

For HK it wasn't all bad, Barkat and Chapman look like they can bat and they have a bunch of seamers who can all bowl with decent pace, you get the feeling that if these two teams played each other in Aus or England they would be far more competitive.

All in all a really interesting match up but Nepal far too good in these conditions.

  • on March 16, 2014, 17:10 GMT

Im really starting to like the spirit and attitude shown by nepal. they played against HK like a giant. Im backing them to beat Afghans (afghans were my fav associate team until today's match). And shakti, man he bowls like shakib in my point of view. 6 asian teams who dont have foreign players in their squad, CRICKET needs more teams like these. Best wishes to every team from a BD fan!!

  • on March 16, 2014, 17:06 GMT

Wow! What an Emphatic win!!! I'm over the mooon................. cograts team Nepal. Loved to see Sompal bowling at a speed more than 135km/hr. However, this match is over, I wish our national heroes would again start from zero to put up a solid performance against the host in the next match.

  • Snambidi on March 16, 2014, 15:16 GMT

The score of 149/8 by Nepal is indeed a good score for a team which plays for the first. time in an International tournament. The contrast with the match between BD& Afganistan and this match ( Nepal vs Hongkong) is that while BD started the match with a wicket.,Hongkong ended the last over with a series of a wickets ,4 in fact but without a Hattrick for the Bowler. It won't beeasy for Hong kong to score 150. even in the bigger IPL we have seen many matches less than 149 & won too. So Nepal seems to have an edge to beat Hongkong. But let us wait& see

I see real smart bunch of players for Nepal. unlike HK Nepalis got home grown endemic group with no epacts. by looking at them i see they. are doing basics right. Wishes from Sri Lankan fan to Nepali team.
