Pakistan in Zimbabwe ODI Series - 1st ODI

Zimbabwe v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 5 runs

All in readiness for the three-match series to begin. Chris Mpofu will set the ball rolling, and Mohammad Hafeez will take first strike

9.25 Not much grass on the pitch, except for some in the middle of the pitch. A flat track despite the early start. "It is perhaps the match with maximum number of off spinners playing in the history of Cricket. Total 6 with 3 each side. Utseya, Lamb and Waller for Zimbabwe and Ajmal, Hafeez and Malik for Pakistan." Sachit, no surprise that offspin is the easiest genre of bowling. Most of the batsmen-who-can-bowl-a-bit are offspinners

9.20am Malik and Mirza are being a practical couple. At least one person keeps working. A day after it was discovered that Sania's year might be over with knee injury, Malik is back to work

9.15am Some big team news. Shoaib Malik is back. It's been more than a year since he last played international cricket. Sohail Tanvir is back too; he last played in February this year. Also making his comeback is Imran Farhat, who last played in November last year. Aizaz Cheema will make his ODI debut

9am The toss has been won by Pakistan, and they will bat first

8.30am Zimbabwe last beat Pakistan in international cricket on their tour of Pakistan in late 1998. On that trip they won an ODI and a Test. Back then they were arguably at the heights of their power: Flower brothers, Campbell, Goodwin, Johnson, Wishart, Whittal, Streak, Brandes, Strang, Olonga, Mbangwa... that was some line-up for a minnow. Arguably the best worst team ever since more than four-five teams started playing international cricket. Minnows have never been as good since Zimbabwe cricket went into tailspin.

Anyway there is no point living in the past. Both these teams have had setbacks since those days, both have been resilient, but neither of them is quite the same. We welcome you as Zimbabwe start first of their five attempts to register another win over Pakistan, who wear a new look and are keen on experimenting. It's an early 9.30am start in Bulawayo

This goes with every other macthes with all country playrr Can anyone explain this y?" Anokha, I think players can choose whatever number they want. Mostly they pick their lucky numbers. I think Sehwag created a minor controversy by not choosing one in the World Cup

21.1

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, pitched up outside off, driven straight to mid-off

21.2

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, slightly short of a length, pushed off the front foot, finds cover

21.3

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, looks to play this down the ground, but Chigumbura makes a diving save on the right to keep the single down

21.4

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, short of a length, wide outside off, Younis drives with an open face, straight to point. I think this is the most number of dots he has faced in a row today

21.5

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, another push into the off side finds a fielder. "Still no," shouts Younis

21.6

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, 1 run, digs this one in short, and Younis pulls this off the front foot, wide of midwicket for a single

Masakadza to Younis Khan, 1 run, slower ball, too full, driven between cover and point

22.4

Masakadza to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, driven sightly wide of midwicket, and they rush through for another single. A slight fumble from Chigumbura helped

23.2

Chigumbura to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, fuller, closer to off, pushed to long-on for a single

23.3

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, sees Younis step down the track, bowls short of a length, punched back to the bowler

23.4

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, close lbw shout. Younis has moved well across, and misses a straight delivery. Gould says nut out, although Younis has a guilty look on his face. The only thing that could have saved him here is if the ball had hit him outside off. It has hit him in front of off. Younis lucky to still be there

24.2

Utseya to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, wide of the crease, turning into the pads, pushed between square leg and midwicket for one

24.3

Utseya to Younis Khan, FOUR, Younis is making up for those five dots a couple of overs ago. Gives him the charge again, but also opens the stance a bit so that he can loft it over midwicket. First boundary since the 16th over

24.4

Utseya to Younis Khan, 1 run, OUT, Has Younis run himself out? Yes he has . This is hit wide of deep midwicket, and Younis stutters before starting for the second. Waller's throw is flat and quick, and even a dive from Younis is not good enough. They didn't run the first one fast, and were never too keen on the second until -without a hint of disagreement - they both decided to go for the second. Younis had just survived a plumb lbw call in the last over

25.5

Chigumbura to Shoaib Malik, OUT, Taibu has pulled off a blinder, and another comeback man has failed! This will rad as a wicket for the bowler, but it is all down to Taibu. He saw this ball sliding down leg, and moved exceptionally early in anticipation. Malik got a thick edge down the leg side, and Taibu flew across to his left to pouch this one-handed. Smart and athletic both at the same time

Sayeed: "Khan mostly named after big things e.g. Samundar Khan (Sea Khan), Shair Khan (Lion khan), Pahar Khan (Hill Khan), Asad Khan (tiger Khan) etc.. As recently the flood do have BIGGER effect, they start named they kids after it." Mpofu Khan is back meanwhile

44.1

Mpofu to Umar Akmal, OUT, a wicket first ball for Mpofu Khan! He digs this in short, not much venom behind it, and Umar goes for the pull, only managing to hit it as far as midwicket's throat. Not the greatest wicket Mpofu has got, but a big one in the context of this game. Powerplay will be taken next over, and they have sent back the dangerous Umar

Umar Akmal c Utseya b Mpofu 36 (65m 59b 2x4 0x6) SR: 61.01

Sohail Tanvir is the new man in. Round the wicket goes Mpofu

44.2

Mpofu to Sohail Tanvir, no run, and beats his outside edge right away. Tanvir drives away from the body, the ball holds its line, beats the edge

We had a quiet start to the day, but a decent crowd is loving it right now, singing in chorus throughout these last few overs

"Learnfirst is actualy my son's name. I named him that after i witnessed Bryce McGain bein butchered in S.A" Superb stuff, Learnfirst's dad. One slip in for Tanvir

44.3

Right so they will have to take the Batting Powerplay now. "Never understood this idea of delaying the powerplay until the end (when your best batsmen are out and you slog anyway). Bring on the new rules!" James, I suppose the batsmen in are used to batting at a certain pace, and don't quite fancy this unnatural change for five overs and then back to normal middle-overs mode. So they want to take it once they know they can keep on slogging at the end of the five overs. Price to bowl

45.1

45.2

45.3

Price to Adnan Akmal, 1 wide, fires this one down again, another wide

45.3

Price to Adnan Akmal, FOUR, swept away, between square leg and short fine leg - the two deep men on the on side are deep square and deep midwicket, they might need a deep backward square

45.5

Price to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, length ball, on the pads, worked away past square leg for a single

46.1

Mpofu to Adnan Akmal, 2 runs, length ball, middle and leg, worked between deep square and deep midwicket for a couple

46.2

Mpofu to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, runs this square with an open face

Deep midwicket, deep square, long-off are the deep men. Mpofu goes round the stumps to Tanvir. Actually long-on goes back, and long-off come up

46.3

Mpofu to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, slower ball, on off, opens the face, takes the single

Again all three deep men on the on side. Can't afford to give any width

46.6

Pathan: "Q: Where are all the big hitting Pakistan all rounders?? A: Playing in England."

47.1

Sohail Tanvir    10* (10b 1x6)      CB Mpofu    8-1-45-2

Mpofu to bowl his last over. Somehow he will end with just nine. Some miscalculation by Taylor?

48.1

Mpofu to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, he keeps bowling short into the body with a strong leg-side field. This time Akmal is less ambitious and settles for the single to deep midwicket as opposed to trying to hit it through the off side

48.2

Mpofu to Sohail Tanvir, no run, lovely yorker as he sees Tanvir make room. No room at all, no length to get under

48.3

Mpofu to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, this is slightly short of being a yorker, Tanvir hits it down the ground, but the long-on comes around to keep them down to one

48.4

Mpofu to Adnan Akmal, FOUR, Adnan finally manages to make room and hit this through the off side. Mpofu stays with his plan of bowling into the body, Adnan has missed too often to not get the timing right this time. Pierces the gap between cover and extra cover

48.5

Mpofu to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, back to full and straight on the stumps, Adnan digs it out for a single

48.6

Mpofu to Sohail Tanvir, 2 runs, slower one, short, smashed across the line to deep midwicket for a couple

End of over 49 (9 runs) Pakistan 241/6 (RR: 4.91)

49.4

Price to Adnan Akmal, OUT, tries the trusted big reverse-sweep, Price stays full and straight, and he top-edges this low full toss to point. Second wicket for Price, both off reverse-sweeps. Says something about him: he makes you do these low-percentage things

Adnan Akmal c Mpofu b Price 27 (42m 32b 2x4 0x6) SR: 84.37

49.6

Price to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, another flat and full delivery, can't get elevation with those, just the single into the on side

12.47pm Zimbabwe have finished this innings in three hours and 17 minutes. This is superb over-rate. Pakistan looked - for a major part of the innings - good for 280, even 300, but Zimbabwe came back well with regular wickets - the big ones being Younis and Misbah who batted really well for their fifties. Chigumbura bowled very well in the middle, Mpofu and Price at the end. if Zimbabwe bat well, we are in for a good chase. Join us in about 40 minutes
