Division One

Durham kept up the pressure on the top of the table sides with a nine-wicket win against Warwickshire at The Riverside. They produced an outstanding final-day effort, taking nine wickets before knocking off 192 with more than five overs to spare. Michael Di Venuto and Phil Mustard (76 off 58) did most of the work, adding 157 at one-day pace, and Di Venuto ended unbeaten on 91. Warwickshire had been well placed to salvage a draw when play started on 256 for 1, but Paul Wiseman removed Ian Westwood (116) early and the bowlers continued to chip away. Durham were put firmly in control when five wickets fell for 13 runs to Wiseman and Ottis Gibson, before a last-wicket stand of 71 between James Anyon and Lee Daggett gave Warwickshire some hope. Durham, though, had few problems racing to victory and claiming 21 vital points.

A couple of understudies took centre-stage on the opening day of the tour match at Grace Road, allowing the Indians to gain the upper hand against Sri Lanka A. A combination of persistent bowling and poor shot selection enabled Ranadeb Bose and Ramesh Powar to grab nine wickets between them, restricting the Sri Lankans to 266 in conditions that were good for batting. The Indian batsmen built on the advantage, ending the day on 25 for 1.
Mullets aren't associated with disciplined medium-pacers who know their limitations and paunches aren't encouraged in the fitness-centric world of modern-day sport but Bose and Powar defied such notions to turn in effective spells. While Bose broke the back of the Sri Lankan batting, snaffling three wickets in a six over spell either side of lunch, Powar ran rings around the tail. Both overshadowed half-centuries from Michael Vandort and Thilan Samaraweera, batsmen who gave it away after being well set.

Dropped catches cost Scotland on the opening day of their Intercontinental Cup match against Netherlands in Aberdeen as the visitors were allowed to post 255 in bowler-friendly conditions. John Blain collected five wickets, but Tom de Grooth was dropped three times in his career-best 98.
After being put in, Netherlands were handed a solid start by de Grooth and Alex Kervezee before Paul Hoffman made the breakthrough, having Kervezee taken at second slip. Hoffman, who was a surprise omission from Scotland's Twenty20 World Championship squad, was the most economical bowler as he showed the selectors what they will be missing.
de Grooth was caught behind off Blain two runs short of a maiden first-class century after striking 13 boundaries and receiving three lives. Blain continued to mop up the lower order, but Scotland will feel they missed a chance of put even more pressure on Netherlands.

South Africa ease to 99-run win

South Africa's women eased to a comfortable 99-run win over their Dutch counterparts at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen, thanks to a solid batting performance from their top five, and a disciplined bowling effort in which Sunette Loubser, Lonell de Beer and Susan Benade were the pick with two wickets each.
After winning the toss and batting first, South Africa never looked back. Having already got the measure of the Netherlands attack during their Test victory in Rotterdam earlier in the week, they racked up a comfortable 239 for 6, with Cri-Zelda Brits top-scoring with 46.
In reply, the Netherlands top-order capitulated, with four of the top six making single-figures. Helmien Rambaldo held the innings together with 34 from 69 balls, but South Africa were never in danger of defeat.

Lancashire crash to 108-run defeat

Another seesawing day between Lancashire and Sussex left proceedings intriguingly poised at Liverpool

A match of fluctuating fortunes had a surprisingly tame finish, as Sussex moved to the top of the championship table with a 108-run victory at Liverpool. Lancashire, whose batting failed them dismally at the crunch, virtually surrendered their own championship hopes for another year.
True to the pattern of this match, the balance during the morning session shifted from one side to the other. Sussex had finished the second day on 127 for 2, with Mike Yardy and Murray Goodwin firmly entrenched on 52 and 68 respectively. Both fell without adding to their overnight scores, Yardy caught down the leg side trying to glance a poor ball from Dominic Cork, and Goodwin caught in the slips off a fine delivery from Glen Chapple that moved away off the pitch.
Their replacements, Chris Adams (42) and Carl Hopkinson (32), fought back well after a dogged start, taking their team through almost to lunch - before both fell in quick succession to Muttiah Muralitharan to bring Lancashire back to even terms again. Adams was caught on the midwicket boundary lofting a sweep, after being dropped off a similar stroke when 19. This proved to be a very significant miss. Who knows how the match might have gone had it been held?

Alex Wharf rescued Glamorgan's dignity with a defiant half-century at Lord's, but he couldn't prevent a predictable innings defeat, as Middlesex wrapped up the remaining four wickets of their second innings for the addition of 64 runs. Wharf was last man out for 55, a knock that included six fours and two sixes, but Glamorgan still finished 71 runs short of making their opponents bat again. The pick of the bowlers was Murali Karthik, who added one more victim to finish with the brilliant match figures of 9 for 73. Glamorgan remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
On a rain-reduced day at Bristol, Grant Hodnett was last man out for 168 as Gloucestershire amassed a healthy 454 in their first innings against Derbyshire, a lead of 142. Graham Wagg was the pick of Derbyshire's bowlers with 5 for 119 from 30.3 overs. By the close, Derbyshire had chiselled the deficit down to 51 for the loss of two wickets, thanks largely to a second-wicket stand of 68 between Travis Birt and Michael Dighton, who top-scored with 42. Birt was still there at the close, on 37.

Law defies Sussex on seesaw day

Another seesawing day between Lancashire and Sussex left proceedings intriguingly poised at Liverpool

Another seesawing day between Lancashire and Sussex left proceedings intriguingly poised at Liverpool. The first session was fairly even, as Stuart Law played defiantly with reasonable but not dominating support at the other end. First Sussex and then Lancashire surged ahead in turn during the afternoon session, only for Sussex to redress the balance during the final two hours.
Law has often been the scourge of Sussex bowling, and he looked like adding another century to his tally of five against them. It was a grafting innings, with few memorable strokes, but was of immense value. Without him, Lancashire would probably have been out of this game by now.
More memorable during the morning was the return of Andrew Flintoff to the crease after missing half a season. He quickly played a superb cover drive for four and ran up 34 off 36 balls, with six boundaries, before he tried to turn a straight ball from Naved-ul-Hasan to midwicket and was trapped lbw.

Division Two

Travis Birt stood alone with a powerful 140 for Derbyshire on the first day against Gloucestershire at Bristol, but his side collapsed to 312 all out. The next highest scorer for Derbyshire was Simon Katich, the captain, with 41 as the home bowlers - in particular Ben Edmondson - made the most of the conditions. Edmondson picked up 4 for 50 while Steve Kirby chipped in with 3 for 66. In reply, Gloucestershire moved to 32 without loss.
Three Middlesex batsmen made solid half-centuries on the first day of their match against Glamorgan at Lord's, and though none could go on to three figures, the home side finished on 320 for 6. After Billy Godleman fell for 38, Nick Compton found good support in Owais Shah (24), but the pair departed in quick succession. Ed Joyce was brisk in his 51, putting on 52 with Ben Scott (65) before Chaminda Vaas saw out the day with an unbeaten 47. Alex Wharf and Dean Cosker were the two Glamorgan bowlers to make inroads, sharing identical figures of 3 for 62.
